The place to be……..

Once again, Hugh Christie had a strong showing in this years Kent School Football Finals with two teams making it through the early rounds to play at Long Mead Stadium—home of Tonbridge Angels.

After a last minute penalty save by Man of the Match, Adam Barden, Year 10 beat The Hayesbrook School 2-1. Scorers where Harry Hudson and Harry Kempton.

The Year 8 team played really well but were unable to beat a strong St. Gregory’s School team, losing 5-1.

We are really proud of both teams for representing the school and playing the matches with a really good team spirit.

We are very proud of former student, Sophie Shrubsole, who has been selected to stand as the Conservative parliamentary candidate in Birmingham Selly Oak in the 2017 General Election.

Sophie, 27, is currently a Tonbridge and Malling Borough councillor, where she serves as Cabinet Member for Housing. She is also Director of Operations at the Westminster Business Council.

She is a graduate of the University of Birmingham.

We wish her well on June the 8th.

Year 8 pay tribute to World War One heroes

Year 8 students recently participated in a two day residential visit to the World War One battlefields and memorials in Belgium and Northern France.

Having studied the conflict in the REAL curriculum, students were able to see first hand where the battles had taken place and see the vast number of graves and memorials to the fallen. A number of students were able to find the names of relatives, whose bodies were never recovered, engraved on the memorials at the Menin Gate and at Thiepval.

One of the highlights was attending the daily act of remembrance at the Menin Gate in Ypres, where three Hugh Christie students presented a poppy wreath on behalf of the school.

Students also visited the battlefield on The Somme at Newfoundland Park where they were able to view an untouched battlefield still pitted with craters and trenches.

The students were respectful and excellent representatives of our community. The memories of this visit will truly last a lifetime.

‘Bye Bye Birdie’ wows audiences with a tremendous show

The Hugh Christie annual production for 2017 was Bye Bye Birdie—the story of a fictional fifties pop star who gets called up to serve in the American Army and how his manager tries to make as much money as he can from his star whilst trying to settle down with his long time love.

The show contained some amazing performances. Josh Gurr played Comrade Birdie in his final show before leaving us at the end of this year. Josh has starred in six shows during his time at Hugh Christie and has set a very high level of professionalism that other students now follow.

Ivan Collis, who played Albert, and Yasmine Baker-Smith, who played Rosie were outstanding. They were supported by a strong cast of characters and a company of singers and dancers who captured the spirit of the show beautifully.

The show was successfully directed by Mrs Burton and produced by Mrs Conroy.

Hugh Christie students once again showed what a talented and creative group they are. We look forward to the next show in 2018!

Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 are in the final few weeks before their important examination season starts.

This year, students in Year 11 and 13 will be taking new examinations in a number of courses. This has been a real challenge for both staff and students but we have been incredibly proud of how everyone has worked together to prepare.

Whilst a number of the creative subjects have already held exams, the main season starts on Monday 15th of May until the end of June.

The BBC have produced an excellent website to support students and help parents with how to prepare for exams. The website can be accessed from the following link - http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/highlights/curations/zpbdxfr.

We wish all our students well with exams over the next few weeks.

Sixth Form Business Students plan great days out! Students in Years 8 and 10 benefited from two fantastic trips planned by Sixth Form Business students as part of their course.

Year 8 students had a fabulous day at London Zoo courtesy of Lee, Harry, Lucy and Jen. They organised the entire visit and were excellent guides on the day, making sure everyone had an amazing day out.

Year 10 students also enjoyed a great time at Thorpe Park courtesy of Jack, Becca, Shanon and Nat.

In both trips, the staff attending were incredibly proud of what the students achieved. Well done!
