About HOBYFor over five decades, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has inspired young people to make a difference and become catalysts for positive change – in their home, school, workplace, and community. As America’s foremost youth leadership organization, HOBY has a long and impressive history of successfully motivating youth and volunteers to outstanding leadership and service.

HOBY does not teach students what to think, but how to think—creatively, critically, and compassionately. Each year, more than 10,000 high school sophomores attend HOBY leadership programs both across the country and abroad. These programs are volunteer driven, and 65% of volunteers are HOBY alumni. Over 435,000 young people have participated and are making a difference solving such key issues as poverty, hunger, homelessness, bullying and disease.

HOBY’s Mission: To inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovations.

HOBY’s Vision: To motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within our global society, through understanding and action, based on effective and compassionate leadership.

Javier La FianzaHOBY Chief Executive Officer@HOBYPrez

As HOBY enters its 57th year, I want to reflect on another remarkable year for our organization and express my gratitude to our Ambassadors and volunteers transforming communities worldwide. Your continued commitment to HOBY and improvement in yourselves and our communities will positively impact the lives of others for generations to come.

Your commitment to HOBY pays dividends. Together, we contributed more than 3.3 million hours of service in our communities this year—a new record for HOBY and nearly a 20% increase over our previous record of 2.8 million set last year. Our work translated to more than $74.5 million in economic impact for our schools, social service organizations, neighborhoods, and communities.

The pinnacle of our year was the 2014 World Leadership Congress in Chicago. During our WLC Service Day, we helped clean and landscape Humboldt Park on Chicago’s West Side. More than 450 HOBY youth contributed their hands and minds to this project, serving more than 2,000 combined hours in one afternoon—our largest project ever. One Chicago Park District representative estimated the value of our work at more than $150,000. That’s incredible!

Our efforts attracted media attention throughout Chicago. We gained coverage from CBS TV and Radio, ABC, NBC, Univision, and the Chicago Sun Times. We even “trended” on social media twice during the conference with our #WLC14 and #ItStartsHere messages. Overall, we trended three times this year – the third time during our #HOBY2014 memories campaign.

We are committed to the success of our young people – at HOBY and in their home communities and beyond. In service to this commitment, I am proud to share that this year participants at the HOBY Advanced Leadership Academy at George Mason University will receive one college credit. This partnership is the beginning of what I hope will become many more with higher education institutions across the country.

I’m continually amazed at the commitment of our young people to the HOBY mission and the vision Hugh O’Brian set nearly six decades ago. Please continue to share our vision with your friends, families, partners, and young people everywhere. Thank you for your support and passion for developing young leaders who change our world.

Sincerely,Javier La Fianza

2014 Outstanding Young Alumni Recipients

Sara SuraniHOBY Texas, 2012

After returning from the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference, Sara was inspired to make a difference in the community around her through dedication, drive, and education. After analyzing the diabetes “epidemic” in South Texas, Sara founded iConquer, a program with a mission to see a world where the obesity and diabetes rates are greatly reduced in the younger population. iCounquer focuses on educating the three to six year olds through puppet shows, self-created animated movies, games, exercise routines, dances, and fun recipes. Additionally, Sara also cofounded another non-profit program titled Project KNIGHTS. Project KNIGHTS (Keep Nurturing and Inspiring Good Habits in Teen Sleep) aims to educate teenagers about the hazardous effects of sleep deprivation through a “teens educating teens” approach.

Together these two programs have impacted over 12,000 students and received more than $60,000 in grants from local, state, and national organizations. Sara hopes to expand both iConquer and KNIGHTS to the national level and strives to emulate the qualities that inspired her at HOBY in 2012.

Virginia NewsomeHOBY Kentucky, 2011

Virginia is a Musical Theatre major at Oklahoma City University, and is the Founder and CEO of heARTS for the Arts. In the summer of 2011, she attended the HOBY World Leadership Congress as a Kentucky Ambassador. She had an idea floating in the back of her head and finally felt confident enough to tell someone about it. The support she received from her new friends at HOBY helped her turn her idea into a reality. Thus was the birth of heARTS. heARTS’ is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides a creative outlet to students who lack access. They do this by donating all forms of art supplies and conducting workshops for schools who’s Arts Education budgets may have been cut or eliminated. Since the summer of 2011 heARTS has donated almost $200,000 worth of funds and materials benefiting almost 10,000 children worldwide. HOBY not only gave her the courage to create this organization, but the ability to expand her mission internationally. She now attends HOBY seminars all over the country to speak to current ambassadors about community service. HOBY has enabled her to make a difference in the lives of children everywhere making her life what it is today. She only hopes that through the resources HOBY has given her to promote her organization and passion, she will be able to motivate ambassadors to achieve their dreams.
