Well, 2014 is almost over. All of us will be celebrating the holidays with family and friends as well as taking some time to reflect on the year and making some goals for 2015. At the Waterford Historical Museum we are doing the same. In 2014, we bid a fond farewell to our longtime director Brad Utter, and welcomed our new director, Paul Archambault. We continued our Winter Lecture Series with topics ranging from archaeology on the Old Champlain Canal to the Irish Revolu‐ tionaries during the 19 th century in Waterford, Cohoes, and Troy. Our additional successful fundraisers included Tuesdays at 10, Trivia Night, Pancake Breakfast, and Emily Wilson’s spring and fall bus trips. And those mules! Four of the five canal mule statues, decorated by Waterford artists, were part of our 50 th Anniversary Gala Auction. In June, we unveiled our newest exhibit, History Underfoot: Archaeological Explora tions of Waterford, which displayed artifacts spanning a 5,000 year period. In addi‐ tion that month, the Canalways Program, our regional fourth grade educational program with the Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor and NYS Canal Corpora‐ tion, had nine regional schools participate with over 700 students! Looking ahead to 2015, the museum will continue to deliver its successful annual programs as well as offer new programs and exhibits. We are in the process of de‐ veloping a new marketing plan and strategy going forward to help attract new members and visitors and look at new, innovative ways to expand our presence beyond the walls of the museum. Please take a look through our newsletter to find out about many of the exciting projects underway and on the horizon. Thanks again to all of you lending your sup‐ port to the Waterford Historical Museum in 2014. The museum and its programs are not possible without you. We wish you a happy holiday season and a happy New Year! Part of the new Blake‐MacHaffie donation to the Waterford Historical Museum in November revealed the min‐utes of the little known Waterford Debating Society from 1858 to 1860. Its founding  members,  James W. Blake, Frederick  Blake, John Gage, and Theodore E. Button,  wished to bring back the ancient practice of oratory skills once seen as common practice in Egypt, Greece, and Rome.  Debating societies in America date back to the 1760s founded by or‐ganizations like the American Whig Society and Cliosophic Society at Princeton University by James Madison, Aaron Burr, and William Paterson. The societies later merged in the 1920s. Madison, a Whig, and Burr, a Clio, used these societies to help strengthen their skills in persuasion, which helped them rise to leadership in the precocious years of the Republic.  As stated in the Waterford records, debating societies “promoted the interests of humanity and religion.” These debates provide us much social, cultural, and political insight into what was going on in America at the time. Common topics debated from 1858 to1860 in Waterford and other societies around the United States were slavery, American expansion, women’s rights, and the dismemberment of the Union. The Waterford Debating Society’s inaugural meeting took place on September 8, 1858 at the Old Eagle, a former Revolutionary‐era inn and tavern. The site of the old inn has a historical marker located on Second Street be‐tween Broad Street and Division Street.

Below are some of the determinations argued by the Waterford Debating Society between 1858 and 1860:  • “Resolved that intemperance is a greater curse to society than slavery.”  • “Resolved that foreigners should be prohibited from coming to our shores.”  • “Resolved that the telegraph is a greater benefit to community than the railroad.”  • “Resolved that the farmer is more useful than the mechanic.”  • “Resolved that good speakers exert a greater influence than writers.”  • “Resolved that slavery should be immediately abolished.”

CCAP grant providing funding for museum renovations We are pleased to announce that the $50,000 received from the Community Capital Assistance Program (CCAP) in 2013 will be used in the spring/summer of 2015 to address much needed renovations at the museum. Work to be completed on the building will include the fol‐lowing: new roof, siding repair and painting, and parlor ceiling repair. The ADA ramp was recently completed by museum members Josh, Charlie, and Carolyn Hosbach. As mentioned in our previous newsletter, Josh completed the project so that he could achieve his Eagle Scout award.  Way to go Josh!

The Waterford Historical Museum is partnering with the Emma Willlard School’s engineering class to design and construct a new, interactive child friendly canal lock model for permanent exhibit space in 2015. The class designed a conceptual model out of cardboard, pictured right, in early No‐vember and construction is now underway. The model will be approximately six feet long by two feet wide and include two to three locks that will be hand controlled, as well as motor controlled for water flow transfer. The model will represent the Waterford Flight of Locks demonstrating the eleva‐tion descent or ascent that tugboats take between Erie Canal Lock #2 near the Waterford Visitors’ Center and the Mohawk River above Cohoes.   The engineering class also plans to complete interpretive exhibit panels that explain the history of the canal and locks, as well as how each lock operates mechanically. Further, the class will look to design and construct a mobile canal lock model that can easily be transported for educational programs outside the museum. The projected timeline for completion of the model and exhibit panels is February/March 2015. The mobile canal lock model’s tentative completion date is May 2015. Stay tuned for news on the progress of this project!

Most of us recognize the iconic Images of America books by Arcadia Publishing that we see in bookstores like Barnes and Noble or online at Amazon. The books typically have 200 images with captions that high‐light a town’s or city’s thematic history with photos of the built environment, people, events, etc. These books are widely popular with a look back to yesteryear and gives us a nostalgic feel. Just about every town or city seems to have one, right? Well, believe it or not, Waterford, NY does not.  Recent book committee meetings held at the Waterford Historical Mu‐seum, led by Dick Herzog, a former Waterfordian and now Glenville, NY resident, hope to change that, and finally get an Images of Waterford book published.  A book proposal application is currently being written with the help of Waterford history buffs, the Town and Village of Waterford, and the Waterford Historical Museum in hopes that it can be published and printed in time for the Town of Waterford’s Bicentennial Celebration in 2016.   The book will display somewhere between 180 and 240 images covering some of the following topics: neighborhoods (streetscapes), schools and churches, business and industry, transportation (roads, canals, railroad, rivers, trolley), civil service (military‐veterans, fire, police), and disasters (floods, fires).   The preliminary proposal will be submitted by the end of December for review and comment by Arcadia Publishing. Future committee meetings will be held the next several months to provide comment, text, and photos. The committee also plans to issue several announcements about the book, inviting the general public to contribute any historically significant photographs they wish to contribute to the project.
