THE COMPANY AND ITSHughesSafetyShowers

1950 1965 1980 191950 1965965

The Company was founded inJuly 1950 by John D Hughes

M.B.E., a qualified mechanicalengineer and father of TonyHughes, the present ManagingDirector.

Activities included the fabricationof pipe work and pressure vessels, and the erection of pipelines andstructural steelwork for thechemical and petrochemicalindustries.

While working on site, theCompany realised that there wasoften a lack of safety equipment, something that was highlightedwhen one of its ownemployees wasinvolved in anaccident andsufferedchemicalburns to hisleg andfoot.

The onlyemergencyfacility onsite forwashing off thechemical was a

domestic cast iron bath halffull of stagnant, contaminated water!

When the Company wasinvited to provide asolution, it built its firstEmergency Safety Showerand before long it haddeveloped a comprehensiverange of products. Initially, they were rather basic butfeedback from users helped to

improve them and introducerefinements such as frostprotection and insulation.

In September 1968, J D HughesFabrications Limited was formedspecifically to manufactureEmergency Safety Shower andEye/Facewash Equipment. Within afew years it had become themarket leader and by the early1970s it was the largest specialistmanufacturer of this type ofequipment in Europe.

Towards the end of the 1970s,Tony Hughes took over therunning of the business from hisfather. He drew on his engineeringexpertise and started to develophis own ideas for the future of thebusiness. This included launching acontinuous programme of design

and development across theproduct range, which, together with theintroduction ofnew models, confirmed theCompany’scommitmentto quality inboth designandmanufacture.Accreditation toBS EN ISO 9002in 1992 and later

to ISO 9001:2000 was furtherevidence of this focus onquality. Even today, Hughes isthe only companymanufacturing heated andinsulated shower and eyebathunits to this standard.

Innovation has always been atthe heart of the business. The pioneering and highlyacclaimed ‘Portaflex’Decontamination Shower, forexample, is now used by themajority of fire brigades in theUK and many emergencyservices around the world.

During the early 1990s theCompany developed acomplete range of MassDecontamination Units.Primarily made for theemergency services and themilitary, they were also adoptedby the chemical, petrochemicaland associated industries.

In 1997, the Company wasrenamed and restructured withthe formation of theJ D Hughes Group Plc. Twotrading companies HughesSafety Showers Ltd andHughes Water CoolersLtd became whollyowned subsidiaries. Fiveyears later, thewater coolersbusiness was soldso that futureinvestment couldbe focusedexclusively on thespecialist safetyequipment theCompany hadnow becomefamous for.

Meeting World Standards

4

ENSURING PROPER PERFORMANCEThere is one World Standard that is internationally recognised covering thedesign parameters for Emergency Safety Showers and Eye/FacewashFountains, this is the American National Standard ANSI Z 358.1 2009.Although there are other standards published such as the EuropeanLaboratory Shower Standard DIN EN 15154-1 & 2 and the IndianStandard, all the points covered in these are also covered in the morecomprehensive American standard.

According to these standards, four essential requirements must bemet for Emergency Safety Showers and Eye/Facewash Fountains tofunction satisfactorily:

1. Adequate water flow, 2. Ease of operation, 3. Instant and positiveoperation and 4. Reliability.

1. Adequate Water Flow:Properly designed Emergency Safety Showers with manual valves (notself closing) should deliver a minimum of 75 litres/min (16.6 Imp.gallons/min) from a water pressure of 2.1 Bar (30 psi). Shower headsshould produce a conical deluge of water with a diameter of 50 cm at 150cm from the floor surface when spraying from a height of between 208-244cm, and the centre of this spray pattern should be 40 cm from any obstruction.

Eye/Facewash Fountains must provide a continuous effective minimum flow of waterin the region of 11.5 litres/min (2.5 Imp. gallons/min) at a height of 84-114 cm.An auxiliary aerated eyebath diffuser on hose should have a flow rate of not less than 1.5 litres/min (1/3 Imp. gallon/min).Higher flow rates for these can usually be achieved by adjusting the flow regulators.

In addition all Emergency Safety Showers and Eye/Facewash Units must provide a continuouseffective flow of water at the minimum rated pressure.

2. Ease of Operation:Activation devices must be simple to use and easily accessible - even if thevictim has impaired vision. Stay-open ball valves operated either by handpull levers, panic bars or a walk-on foot control enable an EmergencyShower to be operated quickly and efficiently delivering a continuousdrench for 15 minutes, allowing the casualty to remove anycontaminated clothing without having to hold on to a spring returnvalve. Quick action valves operated by pull handle, treadle footcontrol, lifting a lid or even pushing a button with the forehead willenable an Eyebath or Eye/Facewash Unit to be operated quicklyand efficiently for 10-15 minutes and leave the hands free to holdthe eyes open throughout the irrigation. It is a requirement that allpersonnel exposed to hazardous substances be fully trained in theuse of Emergency Shower and Eye/Facewash Equipment.

3. Instant and Positive Operation:Instant and positive operation isimperative for all EmergencyShower and Eye/FacewashEquipment as every second

counts in an emergency.Water supply valves must

open quickly and simply asmaximum flooding action

must be provided within 1second.

4. Reliability of Equipment:Probably the single most important factor when choosing this typeof equipment is how well made it is. Units must be capable ofperforming their required service even after long periods of idleness.Top quality valves operated by jam-proof, robust and corrosion-resistant actuating devices are essential for total reliability. To ensurereliability of units installed outdoors in cold climates, it is essential thatthese units be freezeproof. Furthermore, when units are installedoutdoors in very hot climates, it is equally as important that these unitsare insulated from the effects of overheating due to solar radiation.

INSTALLATION TIPSEmergency Safety Showers and Eye/Facewash Units should be within 10 seconds reach if an accidentoccurs; for strong acids and caustics they must be immediately adjacent to the hazard. Ideally theyshould be centrally located in a prominent position and not obstructed by heavy traffic or clutter. Suchspots are easily remembered by panic-stricken persons. Both Emergency Showers and Eye/FacewashUnits should be on the same level as the hazard.

All units should be clearly labelled with pictogram signs toInternational Standard ISO 3864-1 and whereverpossible, green/white stripes or green lights shouldbe used to help identify the Shower andEye/Facewash areas.

Regardless of the type of fixture installed, only potable water should be used. Theinlet water pressure must meet themanufacturers recommended minimumand the supply pipe should have at leastthe same diameter as the inlet pipe onthe equipment - even larger if longlengths of pipe are being used to feedthis equipment and especially if onlylow water pressures are available.

BATTLING CORROSIONIt is very important to ensure thatEmergency Showers and Eye/FacewashFountains are corrosion resistant as thisadds to their reliability and dramaticallyincreases their life-span. Units made of

conventional materials which areunprotected obviously

deteriorate more rapidlyin corrosive environmentsand subsequently requiresignificantly more maintenance. Corrosion resistant outer jackets orother protective coatings are recommended for use in such areas.Plastic coating over stainless steel has been found to be one ofthe most successful methods of eliminating corrosion onoperating handles and linkages, as well as the use of stainlesssteel nuts, bolts and washers. ABS and Glass Reinforced Plastic(GRP) Eye/Facewash bowls have performed well too, evenbetter than stainless steel which can be affected by thechemicals present on some sites.

TEST PROGRAMMESIt is vital that Emergency Safety Showers and Eye/FacewashFountains be visually inspected every day to make certain that

nothing has been placed in or around them which may prevent quickand easy access. Water flow should be checked at least once a week to

flush the line and to verify proper operation, and to ensure that the watersupply line has not been inadvertently turned off. Eyebaths and Eye/Facewash

Fountains should be tested daily and cleaned on a regular basis.

A good maintenance programme for Emergency Safety Showers and Eye/Facewash Fountains is alsovery important as it can increase their life span and guarantee the equipment’s reliability. As well asbeing beneficial from an employee’s point of view, the Health and Safety Executive consider themlifesaving equipment, in the same way as they do fire extinguishers; regular servicing can help satisfythe Health and Safety Executive’s Inspector that this equipment is being well maintained.

The COSHH Regulations require that safety equipment is “maintained in an efficient state, in efficientworking order and in good repair”, also records must be kept of the examinations and tests carried outfor a period of at least five years. The ANSI Standard specifies annual inspections and maintenance logs.

In Great Britain, the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and theControl of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 1996require that Emergency Safety Showers and/or Eye/Facewash Fountainsbe provided wherever employees may be exposed to external injuryfrom chemicals or other substances hazardous to health.

Typical of such occurrences are the spilling, splashing or sprayingof acids, caustics, or other dangerous or corrosive agents.

Other common hazards are fire and explosion. Whereflammable liquids are present

there is a hazard of clothingbecoming ignited, onlyprompt extinguishing ofthe flames by anEmergency Showerprevents major injuryor death. Splashes ofmolten metals may alsocause ignition of clothing.

Splashing and spraying of hotliquids, and worker exposure to toxicor corrosive dust particles are other situationsthat may require quick drenching from Emergency Safety Showers and/or

Eye/Facewash Fountains to avoid serious injuries.

MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE HEALTH & SAFETY (FIRST-AID)REGULATIONS IN LINE WITH THE HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMISSION (HSC) APPROVED CODE OF PRACTICE.

UNIQUE DESIGNFEATURES

Good designs can beimproved and updated, and that includesEmergency SafetyShowers. The main designchanges with the modelsin this range concern theouter casing which is nowrotationally moulded fromunbreakable whitepolyethylene rather thanfabricated from grey uPVCor polypropylene tube. Inaddition to improvedimpact resistance, thisimproves visibility, so thatthe shower stands out ina pipework environment.

The Shower and BodySpray operatingmechanism has also beenre-designed. Previoustriangular or circular pullhandles have beenreplaced with a moreeasily operated panic bar, which incorporates a testhandle. The test handle isparticularly useful whenthe unit has to be testedweekly - as stipulated inthe American NationalStandard (ANSI Z358.12009). In addition to anew style stainless steelfoot treadle, the unit hasa Light Box fitted to thetop as standard. Whenthe optional light is fittedthis illuminates the signsfor greater visibility ondull days and at night.Diffusers also shine lightdownwards to ensure theoperating mechanism andshower area are well lit atall times.

A further developmentwithin the range is thenew styleEyebath/FacewashFountain. This moderniseddesign includes innovativefeatures such as enhancedgraphics, integralshatterproof mirror andraised splashguard.

The modular design thatmade our previous rangeof Heated Outdoor Unitsso successful has beenretained to ensure easyaccess to the valves. Thispermits easy removal andreplacement of anymodule if it becomesdamaged.

The Temperature Controlled(TC) Emergency Safety Showeris intended for outdoor usewhere the water requiresheating. It has a 300 litre tankand 3kW heater and regardlessof the ambient temperaturewill deliver tepid water for theANSI recommended minimumperiod of 15 minutes. Waterfrom the heated tank is mixedwith the mains fed cold supplythrough a high flow ratethermostatically controlledvalve to maintain atemperature of between 25 -35°C.

In addition to delivering waterat the required temperaturethrough its own shower head, the TC unit can also supplyheated water to otherEmergency Showers via asecond outlet from the tank. This means that severalshowers within an area canmeet the temperature andduration criteria stipulated inthe ANSI standard.

The standard unitconsists of aheated tank, overhead showerand side mountedEyebath/Facewash withprotective lid. If preferred,it can be supplied withoutthe Eyebath/Facewash.

Alternatively, the unit can besupplied without the showeror Eyebath/Facewash andsimply used to supply heatedwater to other Shower andEyebath/Facewash units.

Using Emergency SafetyShowers in cold climatesposes particular problemsfor casualties.Temperature ControlledShowers are intended foroutdoor use in lowambient conditions andare designed to remain onstandby to deliver warmwater for up to 15minutes to avoid thecasualty going into shock.

Showers in theTemperature Controlledrange have an integralheated tank to deliverwarm water by mixing itwith the mains fed coldsupply. They can also beused as a warm watersource to feed otherEmergency Shower unitsin the local vicinity.

The TemperatureControlled ShowerCubicle uses a standardimmersion or trace heatedshower unit within atemperature controlledcabin. The casualty isafforded protection fromthe elements whileshowering and, ifnecessary, can remain inthe protectedenvironment until helparrives.

Temperature ControlledShower Cubicle

The Temperature ControlledShower Cubicle is designed foroutdoor use in exposedfreezing conditions. It is fittedwith a thermostaticallycontrolled air heater and ispre-insulated to help maintaina warm internal airtemperature.

Push open doors giveunimpeded access andautomatically close behind thecasualty on entry. Windows inthe doors enable the casualtyto be monitored whilst usingthe shower which is imperativein case assistance is required.

As standard the cubicle issupplied with an ImmersionHeated Shower from ourPremium Range which includesan Eyebath/Facewash as wellas an additional Body Spray.Should either theEyebath/Facewash or BodySpray not be required (asillustrated) this is available at areduced price.

Should 15 minutes of warmwater be required, this showercubicle can be combined withthe Temperature ControlledShower STD-TC-100K/11K.

The cubicle frame is normallymanufactured from GalvanisedMild Steel but can be madefrom Stainless Steel if required.(Shown with optional drainsump and alarm system).

For PersonalProtective Equipment

In cases where PersonalProtective Equipment(PPE) is worn it isimperative that anycontaminant or otherunpleasant substance isthoroughly washed offprior to removal. This isnecessary, not only for thehealth and safety of theindividual (in line withcurrent legislation), butalso to preserve theeffective life of this verycostly equipment. All models in this range ofDecontamination Showers(with the exception ofmodel DEC-D-29 and theDamping Shower) havebeen specially designed tointroduce a detergent intothe water flow. This isnecessary to ensure athorough and speedydecontamination.

Operation of PPEDecontamination

Showers

The operation of theseshowers is in two stages -the detergent application, followed by the waterdrench. The detergent isinduced into the flow ofwater by a venturi actionwhich delivers a mixtureof diluted detergentthrough an overheadshower and a hose brush. The hose brush is of a carwash type and is fitted toassist in thedecontamination processwhen dealing withdifficult or excessivespillages. The secondstage, the water drench,is delivered from eighthigh velocity spraynozzles from the sidesand two high velocity, high flow-rate nozzlesfrom above. This means athorough 360˚decontamination isprovided.

Wall Mounted Models

Wall mountedDecontaminationShowers, designed tointroduce a detergent intothe water flow in order togreatly increase thecleansing action. Thesemodels incorporate a twostage operation, similar infunction to model DEC-V-5, detailed on pages 66 &67 and were designed inconjunction with one ofthe major pharmaceuticalcompanies in the U.K.Also, these models havebeen found to be moresuitable in locationswhere space is at apremium.

Damping Shower

For the damping ofprotective clothing priorto removal, avoiding therisk of contact withairborne contaminants. The cubicle is fitted withten water nozzlespositioned overhead, atchest height and at waistlevel. This configurationensures thorough 360°coverage in the shortestpossible time. As totaldamping takes place in amatter of secondsthroughput is increasedcompared withconventionaldecontamination showers, and is achieved withoutcompromisingperformance and withminimal contaminatedwaste.

DAMPING SHOWERA simple and effectivesolutionThis walk-throughDecontamination Cubicle hasbeen designed specifically forthe pharmaceutical industry foruse in laboratories, productionareas and packagingdepartments. However it issuitable for manyenvironments where there is apotential risk of contaminationof protective clothing byairborne particles.

Fully automatic operationThe Damping Shower startsautomatically when a personenters the cubicle and breaksthe photoelectric beam. Itcontinues to operate until theyleave the cubicle. Eliminatingmanual control prevents therisk of depositing contaminantson operating devices withinthe cubicle.

Complete protectionIt delivers a fine water mist tothoroughly dampen full-bodyprotective clothing. It alsoleaves both hands free so thatthey can be raised for quickerand more efficient damping. The damping of clothing priorto removal prevents the releaseof airborne contaminants.

Decontamination whereverit’s neededIf the Damping Shower cannotbe installed permanently, it islight enough to be movedeasily to whereverdecontamination facilities arerequired. As the flow rate isrelatively low, water can besupplied by a hosepipeconnected to the unit’s inletmanifold. Only small quantitiesof waste water are produced sothe optional sump can bemanually emptied as requiredor, for convenience, a hoseconnection made to thenearest effluent collectionpoint.

OptionsThe cubicle frame ismanufactured from stainlesssteel and can be clad in eitherglass-reinforced plastic (GRP)or steel panels depending onthe application and intendedlocation. An optional GRP drain sumpcan be fitted into the base ofthe cubicle to collect surpluswater and can be permanentlyplumbed into the site’s effluentcollection and treatmentsystem.
