Hukarere Nurtures Learners and Leaders
Kia ora Whanau,
I am writing to inform you that currently Mrs Pearcey is on leave and we will update
you on her return. With the support of the Board of Trustees, I will be temporarily filling
in during her absence along with Kaye Ross who is Acting Deputy Principal.
It was our pleasure to welcome Hinemairangi Maxwell-Tapuke to our School Leaders
Team. She holds the position of Prefect with the responsibility of Taha Manaakitanga.
With the recent tragedy that took place in Christchurch, Hukarere held a special karakia
service here and a combined service held at Te Aute.
Students have been privileged to participate in a range of activities this term:
Top Parish – held in Rotorua (Koka Jacqui)
Hukarere Girls’ College, Te Aute College & Woodford House – Students
participated in variety of activities held at Te Aute College.
Waka Ama NZ Secondary Schools Results (Rotorua):
Senior Girls – made the Semi-finals of the Plate Division
Junior Girls – Gold Medal in the Bowls Finals Division
Ki o rahi – Hukarere & Te Aute mixed team qualified for National Competition
that were held in Hawkes Bay in the first week of school holidays – placing 14th.
Wizdym Williams was selected from this tournament for the NZ Maori Team.
Regional Kapa Haka Team are thriving under the guidance of Whaea Channings.
Thank you to Whaea Amy who has been assisting with this.
Powhiri for House of Bishops – attended at Te Aute College.
Term Reports will be available to Parents under a new management system that will
be available this term. A letter will be sent out outlining what that will entail soon.
We would like to welcome Bailee Hodgson who will be our new Administration Officer
beginning in the holidays. A huge thanks to Hine Heke who has been holding the fort.
She has been our ‘little ray of sunshine’.
Thank you to the all staff in school and Hostel for everything you do. We appreciate
that you make our students learning inside and outside of class the priority.

Junior Social Studies. This term we have learning about water and how it affects people and societies. We have researched over twenty countries where water is both abundant and scarce to see how access to fresh water influences the development of each country and the lives of those living there.
We have begun planning several social actions to raise enough money to provide a water source via World Vision for a community in need. We will pick these social actions up again in Term Two. In response to the Christchurch shootings, we have just finished a research project focusing on developing our understanding of Muslim Culture, Islamic religion and the role the Taliban play in the stereotyping of Muslim people. As an act of support, we have written letters to both mosques in Christchurch, expressing our sadness for their loss. Senior Social Studies. Level 1 Social Science students are researching an historical event and its significance to New Zealanders. Topics of inquiry are the Tangiwai disaster, the bombing of Hiroshima, the influence of Jazz music in the 1920s, and the Wahine disaster. This project has two parts. 1. To show the students’ research process. 2. The students are creating a poster to show their understanding of their chosen event.
Level 2 Social Studies students have researched the Baby Booties social action that demonstrated against late stage abortion. 13,000 baby booties, reflecting the number of abortions carried on in that year, were knitted and laid outside parliament. The students looked at the what, where, who, when and why of the social action, and then evaluated the effectiveness, strengths and weaknesses of the action in enabling communities/nations to meet responsibilities and exercise rights.
Level 3 History students are researching an event of significance to New Zealanders. Topics include the development of the Kapa Haka and the Kohanga Reo movements.
Kia ora whānau! What a busy start to the year. In our Senior Mathematics class we have students looking to achieve NCEA Level 1, 2, and 3 credits. At the beginning of the year each of our girls had a conference with Whaea Amy where they chose standards that best suited our kohine and their career aspirations, interests and goals. Many of our girls are striving for Merit and Excellence Endorsements in Mathematics. Kia kaha kōhine mā!! There is holiday homework for all Senior learners in Mathematics. Please encourage our girls to do a little bit everyday rather than one big bit at the end of the holidays.

In our Junior Mathematics class we are learning through Games and Puzzles. Our core focus for this term has been on Number Knowledge and Strategies. Through collaborative learning we are laying the foundations for the next three terms where we begin working in small groups with tailored activities and tasks to suit all of our girls abilities and aspirations.

I have been at Hukarere for five weeks now and it has been an interesting time so far with much to do. The most important focus for the Māori Department and as Curriculum Leader of Māori is to develop and extend our students knowledge of Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga. We want our students to experience success in a learning environment that grows capabilities, that empowers students to be confident and competent speakers of Te Reo Māori.
In addition, we are excited about our journey this year with Te Aute College as a combined team for the Regional Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition. This will be held on Friday, 31st of May at the Sports Centre on Railway Road in Hastings. Our practices are held at Hukarere and Te Aute on alternative weeks. Whānau, please feel free to come and be with our team during their practices. We would all love to see you nō reira, nau mai, haramai. These are the remaining practice days and times but other dates may be added:

Attended the unveiling of the late Archbishop Paraone Turei at Kauaetangohia Marae, Whangaparaoa (5 x Hukarere students and 1 x Te Aute student). My thanks to Te Kura Mana Maori o Whangaparaoa for the accommodation the night before the unveiling and our Principal for the use of a school van.
Officiated my first marriage ceremony in Gisborne,
Blessed the grounds prior to school starting,
Opening karakia at the Powhiri for new students and staff including Hostel Induction Day for new students and the Powhiri for Whaea Terehia Cummings
Whole School Weekly Chapel Services (Eucharist — Wednesday) x 6, (Morning Worship — Monday) x 5 including Ash Wednesday Service.
Made pancakes for the whole school with a team of students for Shrove Tuesday.
Hostel Sunday Chapel Services x 7 which included one service at Eskdale Memorial Church, an Evening Candlelight Vigil in our Gym and a Combined Chapel at Te Aute with Woodford House.

CHAPLAIN
Junior Visual Arts Students have been busy exploring their observational drawing skills. We have been looking at the foundation skills of how to drawing three-dimensional geometric shapes as a way to help students produce more accurate drawings. Shading is also a very important part of this process and students have been focusing on how to control and develop their shading abilities using a range of drawing materials. The junior art classes are also very busy with Matua Kere looking at how to draw Māori art. Learning about and understanding the meaning of the ‘manawa line’ and how each students work is unique unto themselves.
Senior Visual Arts Senior art classes are focusing on their folio for external assessment. This assessment requires students to produce x2 panels of work (Level 1 & 2) x3 panels of work (Level 3) which demonstrates development of ideas. Students are encouraged to use artist models to help them explore different art-making techniques that they can incorporate into their own artworks.
This work is due in at the end of Semester 2, (in 5 weeks’ time). Time is of the essence now for students. Can you please support your daughter/mokopuna by talking to them about their work and helping them to stay focused and motivated to complete their mahi on time.
Students will now need to be putting in extra time outside of set class time and the art room will be open every lunch time for senior art students to come in and work on their assessment.
