Suzanne joined the University of Sheffield in 2017, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise. She previously worked at the University of Portsmouth as a Senior Lecturer in speech, language and communication sciences, as well as developing a successful career as a clinician. In 2016, she set up her own independent speech and language therapy practice, as well as previously managing the Early Communication Support Service for Hampshire County Council.

“My experience and area of special interest is speech difficulties and Speech Sound Disorder in early years”, Suzanne explains. “I am currently undertaking a project in early intervention for Speech Sound Disorder, and I love to bring the latest research findings to my lectures, workshops and dissertation tutorials.”

“I teach on our MSc Speech Difficulties, and am the admissions tutor for all of our postgraduate courses. I particularly enjoy guiding those who already hold a relevant degree into appropriate courses. I encourage them to take the opportunities postgraduate study offers both in terms of professional confidence and career development, including research.”

“Not enough speech and language therapists are both clinically and research active, particularly in the developing and expanding independent practitioner field and if I can have more positive impact on changing this picture, so much the better!”

Suzanne joined the profession later in life, beginning her undergraduate studies at the age of 35, before going on to study Sheffield’s MSc Speech Difficulties part-time by distance learning.

“I worked full-time, looked after my family and attended the study blocks to meet other students and the teaching team”, she recalls.

“I understand how hard it is to find the time to study, to have the space in your day to take a breath and really think about the intervention you chose, or how the client you worked with responded. I know what we do is not easy. We often make it look easy, but it isn’t. It’s multidimensional and affected and impacted upon by many factors, both internal and external to the client.”

In 2016, Suzanne was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship. “This took me to Australia to investigate early intervention for speech sound difficulties. My postgraduate study at Sheffield was highly supportive of my success in the Fellowship.”

“It is the only course in the UK where teachers can learn alongside therapists”, says Rose Brooks, explaining why she chose to study MSc Language and Communication Impairment in Children. “I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from eminent researchers in the field, who were also lovely people! It was a great chance to share ideas between the fields of education and speech and language therapy.”

Rose’s background was in education. “I trained as a primary teacher in the USA and then came to the UK. I taught all age groups at primary level and worked in a range of leadership positions including Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), Deputy Headteacher and Acting Headteacher”, she recalls. “I then moved sideways to use my special educational needs teaching qualification, working in a peripatetic service for children with special educational needs. There, I developed specialisms in dyslexia, autism, dyspraxia, and speech, language and communication needs.”

“The MSc Language and Communication Impairment in Children certainly made me want to specialise further in the fascinating fields of language and literacy.”

Rose now works as an Advisory Teacher for Speech and Language. This role involves supporting pupils, teachers, teaching assistants, SENCos and parents. “My main activities include assessment, advice, resources and training in primary and secondary schools. I work with pupils with specific and significant language needs, as well as with some pupils with autism. My masters course at Sheffield has given me confidence to support schools in language and literacy development.”

A great place to studyJoin a like-minded community in our bespoke Human Communication Sciences building.

An ideal location

The University’s Department of Human Communication Sciences is located on the main campus, close to Weston Park, Crookes Valley Park, and Sheffield’s teaching hospitals. Our bespoke home is just 5 minutes’ walk from key campus facilities including the award-winning Students’ Union and sports facilities.

An excellent facility

We aim to cultivate an ideal environment for teaching, research and clinical practice. Our building includes teaching rooms, study space, and equipment to support your learning and practical development.

We are also home to the Philippa Cottam Communication Clinic – an education and research facility run by our staff and students. The clinic’s treatment and observation rooms provide spaces where students can work with people who have communication difficulties.

A supportive community

Studying with us gives you the opportunity to meet a range of people at different stages throughout their education and professional career. This gives you the chance to learn from and support others in ways that benefit your own understanding and development.

As a student, you’ll be encouraged to be involved in many aspects of how your course is run. Student representatives contribute to consultations and decision making. Students also run the Human Communication Sciences Society, organising fundraisers, volunteering opportunities and social activities.

Support for online distance learners

Some of our courses can be studied via online distance learning, meaning that you would spend less time physically on campus compared to full-time students. As a distance learner, you’d benefit from a range of online learning materials, delivered via our virtual learning environment. These resources include readings, activities, web-based material, and virtual seminars.

Distance learners will still have the opportunity to visit us and enjoy our learning environment, as we provide a range of study blocks/weekends for you to attend.

We are internationalSheffield is a global institution and a World Top 100 University.*

Standing together

In 2013, we launched the #WeAreInternational campaign, bringing together students, academics, city leaders and communities to highlight the huge contribution international students make to our culture and our economy.

Since then the campaign has gone from strength to strength, changing perceptions, challenging prejudices, and sending a clear message to the world: international students are welcome here.

We Are International now has the support of 160 universities and colleges, the British Council and the Home Office. We’ve taken our message to parliament. And we’ve inspired one university in the USA to launch a similar campaign of their own.

We started this campaign to make our voices heard. To stand up for what we believe in. International students are important to our economy, but We Are International is about much more than that. It’s about building bridges, breaking down barriers and understanding the world. It’s about all our students, including you.

International community

When you choose Sheffield, you join a supportive community of students and staff from all over the world. We have over 7,000 international students, from more than 140 countries.

Our community is founded on principles of tolerance and respect. You can expect to meet and work with people from lots of different backgrounds, with different points of view.

This diversity makes our community stronger. Together, we challenge and inspire each other to achieve great things
