PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Clinical experience. All students must complete a supervisedpracticum of at least 100 clock hours with a minimum of 40 hoursof direct service work with clientele appropriate to their programconcentration. Students must also complete a supervised internshipof at least 600 clock hours including a minimum of 240 hours of direct service work.

Professional competencies. By the time they graduate, our students can expect to demonstrate competencies such as the abilityto communicate and interact effectively with others, the ability toconceptualize client concerns and provide appropriate intervention,the ability to participate as a team member, and the ability to understand and maintain ethical behavior standards in the helpingprofessions.

M.A. IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT COUNSELING

Complete graduate course requirements (61 credit hours) including HDC 587 Professional Experience: Practicum (3 credithours), and HDC 590 Professional Experience: Internship (6credit hours).

CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELINGis concentration prepares students to provide counseling and consulting services in a wide range of environments such as mentalhealth, correctional, social welfare, rehabilitative and human relationsagencies and institutions.

SCHOOL COUNSELINGis state-approved concentration prepares students for licensure asa school counselor as prescribed by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). It further prepares students to provide counselingand consulting services within elementary and secondary public andprivate educational settings.

MARRIAGE, COUPLE AND FAMILY COUNSELINGis concentration prepares students to provide counseling and con-sulting services for clients of all ages in various types of relationships.
