HSBC Capital Campaign Kickoff

Annual Membership Meeting

What a fun way to support the love of our

pets, by getting atattoo.

A little bit of rain couldn’t keep the crowds away for the Capital Campaign Kickoff! From the minute the doors opened on October 14 at 1:00 p.m., there was a steady flow of curious visitors. Plenty of volunteers, including our intergalactic friends from Star Wars, were there to meet and greet community guests and answer questions. Despite the weather, the mood was cheery, and there was lots of interest in all things Humane Society.

HSBC President Jeannie Wolicki-Nichols was at the front door, welcoming people as they came in. The format was open house and the public was invited to tour the new building. Traffic continued all day long. People mingled and perused the store, admiring the many adorable cat and dog items for sale. A wealth of information was available, including the Donor Paw

Wall and the 4 x 4 tile program. Coordinators from both the dog and cat foster programs were there along with some of their precious, adoptable animals. The walls were decorated with fantastic artwork created by all of the fostered dogs.

Sweet treats were generously donated by the following HSBC supporters: Barbara Bodge, Elaine Stachowiak, Shannon Vasko, Karrie Jaynes, Mary Herr, Kerry Janca, Marykay Plotnik, Karen Wozniak, Heidi’s Darn Good Cookies, and the Gourmet Cupcake Shoppe. Starbucks provided coffee.

The Humane Society of Bay County board and volunteers thank all who participated in the Capital Campaign Kickoff, making it a very successful event!

Tattoo EventThank you to Amy Gokee, a volunteer from Bay County Animal Control and friend of the Humane Society, for organizing a tattoo event held September 14 at Hourglass Tattoo. Some adorable pet tattoos were created by the Hourglass artists. The Humane Society appreciates all of your support.

The annual HSBC Membership Meeting was held for the first time at our very own building on October 12, during which there was a presentation representing the programs of HSBC. Attendees were able to walk around and see the vision for the building as each room had a drawing on the wall showing the design for that room. Bay County Executive Jim Barcia was a guest speaker and talked about changes occurring at Animal Control and what they are doing to better care for animals in our community.

Texas KittensHurricane Harvey devastated Houston, Texas. Many pets were separated from their owners, and many shelters flooded out. The HSBC was able to step up and help by accepting seven kittens. They were taken to and examined by Dr. Francke before being taken to our foster homes. This is a beautiful example of how the love and kindness given by our HSBC volunteers is far-reaching. Thank you to everyone involved in saving the lives of these precious kittens.

Craft Shows and Bazaars Fall was busy for our volunteers as they participated in four craft shows and bazaars. Fundraising chair Kelly Klamer organized the events and tended the tables along with Shellise Martin. The K of C Craft Show was held on October 14. The Bangor Township Craft Show was held on November 4, and $232 was raised (including three calendars and “keep the change” donations). Next was the Central High School Bazaar, where $237 was collected. Finally, they attended the bazaar at the Masonic Temple, raising $71. Many hours were dedicated to these efforts. Thank you to the volunteers who made items to sell and worked at the events, and to the customers who supported our efforts by purchasing HSBC merchandise! Every little bit helps.

Doterra Essential Oils WorkshopOn November 5, a very informative essential oils workshop was held at the Humane Society. There was a presentation of the multitude of benefits that essential oils can have for both people and their pets. After the presentation, those attending were welcome to browse the many products, and participate in a “Make and Take” as well. A generous donation of 20 percent of proceeds was given to the Humane Society for a total donation of $135. Thank you very much to event chair Kelly Klamer for setting this up.

HSBC Small Business Saturday Blood DriveOn Saturday, November 25, the HSBC held a blood drive at its new location. With each donation, three human lives were saved! Watch the upcoming Facebook posts and newsletter for the next blood drive and you too can help save lives, and help us raise money for our rescues at the same time.

Thanks to all of the brave donors who helped to save lives and raise money for the HSBC.Our dog and cat

merchandise has been a big hit at the craft shows.

My Secret Garden Continues its Wonderful SupportMy Secret Garden continued its wonderful support of HSBC with two events this past fall. First, at the Fall Brunch held at The Grand in Essexville, they held a 50/50 raffle, naming HSBC as a recipient of the proceeds. A total of $237 was collected and donated to help our crusade to help all cats and dogs find a home. Second, on November 30, a live Fashion Show was held after hours and was streamed on Facebook. Terri King, the owner of My Secret Garden, offered to have some of our animals carried by the models, showing off the great new fall fashions and some of our adorable animals at the same time. We are so grateful that our cat, Confetti, was adopted by one of the event’s models, Becky! Our thanks go out to Terri for her never-ending support of HSBC.

HSBC Holds Holiday BazaarFor the first time since moving into our new building, the HSBC held our very own Holiday Bazaar. On December 7, vendors such as Pampered Chef, LuLa Roe, Jamberry, Partylite, Sugarspoon, DoTerra Oils, Thirty-one, Sugarmama Sweets and more set up their wares, donating a portion of their proceeds to the HSBC. The turnout was fantastic, and the vendors generously donated $507. A huge thank you to all of our vendors and holiday shoppers!

Many very generous vendors

and shoppers came out to support our

animals.

On Saturday, December 9, Soldan’s Pet Supplies held a holiday event that featured $10 photos with Santa, by professional photographer Sabrina Marie. Many of our adoptable animals were there for the festivities which featured treats and lots of good fun!

Over 70 pets showed up at the Soldan’s event for their picture with Santa.

HSBC adoptable pets were look-ing perfectly festive, hoping to find just the right family.

Santa PhotosOn Saturday, December 2, more than 40 pets made the trip to The Barking Club in downtown Bay City to have their pictures taken with Santa. There were large dogs and small dogs, cats and even bunnies! Many dressed up for the occasion in cute sweaters and festive outfits. Everyone was well behaved in the hope that Santa would grant their Christmas wish.

We thank The Barking Club owner, Kim White, for making the event extra special by providing refreshments and wonderful gift baskets awarded in a drawing. Jolly Rick De Bats in a big, red suit once again did a great job as Santa. Many pets got so excited when they saw him! Our professional photographer, Marcie, from M. Cervantes Photography took many photos to capture that perfect shot.

Once again the Humane Society of Bay County Santa Pet Photos was a great success and lots of fun!

First Adoption Event at the HSBCHow exciting for HSBC volunteers to be able to host an adoption event on December 2 in our own building for the first time! Sherry Nelson, a Humane Society board member, streamed a live video on Facebook, encouraging people to come and visit. Twelve kittens and cats were up for adoption at the event. Along with adoptable animals, there was a big bake sale, animal artwork and a fully stocked store with goodies for cats and dogs.

This was the first of many events to be hosted at the new Humane Society building at 1607 Marquette Street. Watch for news about upcoming events.

Amount for sales of toys and beds, January 1 through December 10, is $5,532.Visit one of these business locations to get your pet a special toy or bed and support our Humane Society.

Thank You to SewersWords cannot express the gratitude I feel for the Humane Society’s sewers. Huge thank yous go out to Mary Casault, Becky Diehl, Sue Schwartz and Elaine Sheppard. They are always willing to make sales items even with last-minute notice during the holidays. They make high quality dog and cat toys, and beds we can all be proud of. Stop by any Humane Society event and you will see the wonderful items they make.

Artistic Teaching Opportunities at the New Adoption CenterThe HSBC would like to interview local artists who are interested in a short-term, paid position (grants pending) assisting with classes/seminars at our new Adoption Center. Responsibilities would include a minimum of a one-hour collaborative presentation to children (elementary, middle, and/or high school ages) to convey and reinforce our message of humane treatment and care of all animals. We are seeking the following skilled artists: painters, photographers, singers and musicians, storytellers, actors, puppeteers, dancers, and magicians. Other artists may be considered as well. Currently, we are considering weekends and summer break times as the best days for offering these educational opportunities.

If you enjoy sharing your talent and working with kids and pets, send an email to [email protected]. Please include your name, artistic skills, and any teaching experience. You will be contacted with further directions later. Don’t miss this fun opportunity to use your skills to make an impact on the children in our community regarding proper care and kindness toward animals.

Future Education Plans for the HSBC Adoption CenterNow that we have our own place, plans are underway for educational opportunities at the Center. With the help of local artists, as well as HSBC volunteers, we plan to offer classes, seminars and possibly summer day-camps for kids.

Using the Center for educational events will be more convenient for volunteers and less stressful for our pet ambassadors since they will not be transported to unfamiliar buildings and classrooms around the county. A more relaxed and familiar environment for our foster pets will make a safer setting for pet-student interactions.

Classes will start after Adoption Center remodeling is finished and educational grants are obtained. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding HSBC classes and educational opportunities in 2018.

Grant Received from Bay Area Communit y FoundationOn November 7, 2017, the Bay Area Community Foundation awarded a grant of $5,000 from the Community Initiative Fund to help support ongoing costs of remodeling our Pet Adoption Center. The HSBC is very grateful to the BACF for their award of this grant. These BACF funds will enable further progress in the renovation of the Pet Adoption Center at 1607 Marquette Ave. and bring us closer to the day when we can open the building to house adoptable cats and host adoptable dogs from our Foster Programs, stage feral cats awaiting surgery in our TNR program, hold educational meetings and presentations, sell our handmade pet items, and

provide space for other HSBC events and activities in support of our mission to save, protect and enhance the lives of animals in Bay County. Thank you, Bay Area Community Foundation!

Petsmart CharitiesHSBC thanks Petsmart Charities for their generous donation of cat food to support our cat foster program. On November 2 and November 21, HSBC members Ron Sujkowski and Beckie McClenahan picked up two shipments of donated cat food (1,660 pounds of canned food and 800 pounds of dry food), to cat foster coordinator Cheryl Mckenzie. These are the types of programs that continue to make our support of rescued animals successful.

Thanks again, Petsmart.

Cats for Compassion Success Story: Denver

Enter the Humane Society of Bay County’s Cats for Companionship program. In this program, we place people-friendly cats who may be harder to adopt, such as older cats, with senior people who want the companionship of a cat without the long-term responsibility of ownership. The cats in this program get loving care and a home, while their senior humans get the benefits of the unconditional love a companion animal offers. Although the seniors are welcome to fully adopt the cats placed with them, in this program they are treated as long-term fosterers rather than adopters. This means that should their circumstances change so that they are unable to care for their cat, the HSBC will retrieve their kitty and place it in another home. Not long ago, Tom, a resident at Center Ridge Arms, attended a HSBC Cats for Companionship presentation that was given there. Tom has been an animal lover all his life, but being without a pet currently, he felt that something was missing. Tom was immediately smitten with Denver’s sweet temperament and friendly personality and soon agreed to be Denver’s foster. They are now happily residing together, giving each other exactly what is needed and, as a result, both of their lives are richer thanks to the HSBC Cats for Companionship program. Sherry Nelson

Information on and treatment for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV-positive) cats have come a long way in the past several years. These cats were once treated as pariahs and often euthanized even if they appeared the picture of health. Unlike feline leukemia, which is highly

contagious, FIV is much harder to pass between cats and usually occurs through deep bite wounds from fighting or defense. However, an FIV-positive mother cat can also infect her kittens before they are born or through her milk. We have now come to learn that FIV-positive cats can live normal lives, both in quality and duration, although as their immune systems are somewhat compromised, they need to be monitored more closely for infections and dental problems. Furthermore, an FIV-positive cat can live safely with an FIV-negative cat as long as neither one of them is a fighter. Although perceptions are changing, misconceptions live on, and FIV-positive cats typically have more difficulty finding permanent homes.

One FIV-positive cat, Denver, a handsome three-year-old gray and white male, entered our HSBC Cat Foster program about six months ago. A very skinny Denver with wounds on his face and neck happened across the path of one of our cat fosterers, who immediately took him in. This gentle, affectionate cat was obviously not “street smart” or feral and took to indoor living, laps and petting like no other. All vet care was done for Denver but, unfortunately, his test for feline immunodeficiency virus came back positive.

Temporary Foster Homes Needed for Adoptable AnimalsThe Humane Society of Bay County is seeking foster homes for adoptable cats and dogs. Interested individuals must fill out an application, be willing to have a home visit prior to placement, provide food, water, litter, treats, etc., and be willing to pick up and/or drop off animals at adoption events. The animals will have been sterilized, vaccinated, dewormed and treated for fleas. The HSBC will cover costs for vet care if needed.

Please contact Cheryl McKenzie, HSBC Cat Foster Coordinator, or Stephanie Beiser, Dog Foster Coordinator, for more information at (989) 893-0451 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

Any time is a hard time for pets and their owners who are facing financial challenges. To help address this need, our HSBC established a Pet Food Pantry at the Salvation Army, 10th and Adams in Bay City, where donated dog and cat food and litter are repackaged and distributed to needy pet owners. Please make a donation of these pet items to our Pet Food Pantry at the Salvation Army on a regular basis.

The greatest need is for cat food and litter. Please donate – your generosity could help keep a beloved pet from being surrendered to the high-kill Bay County Animal Shelter. Volunteer Profile: Shellise Mar tin

13

Chances are, if you’ve been to a Humane Society event, you’ve crossed paths with Shellise. She loves photography, and puts hers skills to good use capturing the personalities of our beloved pets! Helping out taking and posting photos for the cat program is where she focuses her time, and you will often see her taking pictures at the pet stores. More recently Shellise offered to extend her talents to helping organize and run fundraising efforts for the HSBC.

When she is not working to help find homes for our beloved pets, Shellise is a busy wife to Adam, and a stay-at-home mom to daughter Lia, 5, and Austin, 3. Her home also includes three dogs: Harley, Ari and Belle (one beagle mix and two huskies). We can’t forget the two mice, a turtle and fish.

In addition to photography, Shellise enjoys nature, riding motorcycles and the practice of yoga. When the time is right, she plans to go back to school to become a vet tech.

Animals have always been a big part of Shellise’s life. Growing up, she was always surrounded by dogs, cats, iguanas, guinea pigs and a snake.

With all of this experience around animals, it is no wonder Shellise is right at home working with ours!

The HSBC is proud to introduce you to Shellise, and we look forward to having her around more as she expands her role with us.

TNR Success Story: The Rodent Terminator

A fellow Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist who lives with her family outside of Caro informed me that a very nice, orange ear-tipped cat showed up on their rural property a couple of weeks ago. Stray cats come to them periodically, and she’s funded the spaying of two others through our HSBC Trap Neuter Return program. She also received a winterized cat shelter from the HSBC last year to offer to whichever kitty happened to be passing through. Unfortunately, the previous cats have been quite feral and either didn’t stick around very long or something unfortunate happened to them. However, she and her family (including young kids) love this current cat, who is killing mice like crazy! They are now feeding this kitty regularly, and they’ve put the shelter in a warm place, so they’re really hoping this great mouser will stick around.

This picture says it all: A homeless ear-tipped cat, now with a cozy shelter, reliable food source and a friendly family to care for it. In exchange, the family has superb rodent control on their property! It warms the heart to know we are making a difference for homeless cats like this one in our HSBC TNR program.

Business Highlight: Animal Alley Veterinary Hospital7319 Tittabawassee Rd., Saginaw 792-4800

Dr. John VanDaele started Animal Alley Veterinary Hospital in 2011 because he wanted to run his own veterinary business and because he wanted to give back to his community. All his life, he had wanted to work with animals and originally envisioned himself as a wildlife biologist. Then he noticed the work his mother was doing as a nurse and became interested in medicine, which led to him attaining a degree from the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. At the same time that he was planning to open his own vet clinic, his wife gave birth to premature twins, and his aunt gave each of them a stuffed toy animal with the words “Animal Alley” on the tag. Those tags became the inspiration for the name of his new business, and nine years later his daughter still plays with her toy, although the tag has worn away.

For Dr. VanDaele, the greatest challenge in being a vet these days is trying to take advantage of all the new technology available while keeping costs down for his clients. He knows that vet care is expensive, and he wants to help as many people as possible, yet he also wants to give the best care possible.

When he works with organizations such as our Humane Society, he sees the consequences of people who neglect their pets, in the stray and discarded animals brought in by our volunteers. The pets that he has encountered give their love swiftly without asking for much in return, and we should return some of that love, treating them as part of the family and keeping them for life. He knows that the HSBC’s Stephanie Beiser and Jane Billette do a great job of screening people who want to adopt one of our foster dogs, trying to match the dog to the person, and he admires them for making that effort. He says that Stephanie and Jane manage to be both loving and practical in handling the dogs in their care, never expending so much effort on one dog that the others are temporarily overlooked, as can so easily happen.

As the coordinator of the Dog Program, Stephanie has nothing but praise for Dr. VanDaele. She reports that when they started the Dog Program, Animal Alley was the only veterinary clinic to respond when they called clinics and asked if any could offer a rescue discount. She says, “Dr. VanDaele and his staff never fail to work us in for emergencies and special requests, and he takes time out of his schedule to personally call with regular updates.” She points out that members of his staff have adopted dogs from us, and several have fostered for us. Once our adoption center

is operational, Dr. VanDaele has offered to help streamline basic medical care such as vaccines and heartworm testing.

Similarly, Sherry Nelson of the Cat Program describes Dr. VanDaele as a “consummate professional, an excellent teacher and communicator.” She says that he and his staff once devoted more than a year to diagnosing a bad skin condition suffered by one of our HSBC rescued cats, eventually finding effective treatment. He has also agreed to be our vet of record so that we qualify for discount prices on medications such as Revolution, distemper vaccines, and eye antibiotics.

We can move forward in our struggle to make life better for the neglected and unwanted pets in our community knowing that Dr. VanDaele, a thorough professional, will do his best to help us. As Sherry Nelson says, “He is a gem, and we are lucky to have him on our team.”

Sylvia Robins, Staff Writer

Dr. VanDaele is truly a blessing to our beloved animals.

In Memoriam – Cathy BannickWith the passing of Cathy Bannick on October 22, 2017, the Humane Society of Bay County lost a valued member of our volunteer team. Cathy started volunteering with the HSBC in 2015 when she took in and fostered a litter of feral kittens trapped in our TNR Program. Since then, Cathy fostered many HSBC cats and kittens, and she especially liked working with “bottle babies” and sick cats to ready them for adoption. Cathy always gave the benefit of the doubt to any “borderline” semi-feral kittens and worked extensively to socialize them in order to make them adoptable to an indoor home.

Always a dedicated volunteer willing to do whatever was needed, Cathy also helped maintain the HSBC adoption cages at Soldan’s and Pet Supplies Plus, playing with the adoptable cats, cleaning the cages, washing and changing the bedding, providing toys, and deep-cleaning the litter boxes and, if needed, entire cages on a regular

basis. According to an employee at Soldan’s, Cathy is sorely missed, and it wasn’t uncommon to see her come into the store two or three times a day to fluff up the bedding and check on “her babies.” In addition, Cathy helped by transporting food from the stores and taking cats in need of vet care to and from their appointments.

HSBC Cat Foster/Adoption Program volunteer Sherry Nelson says, “I’d describe Cathy as kind, tender-hearted and a very good listener. She had a great capacity for empathy for both animals and people.” Rest in peace, Cathy – you were a great friend to the HSBC and to the homeless cats in our community.

2018 Humane Societ y Board of Directors “More than 9,000 dogs and cats are killed

each day – yes, every single day – in America’s shelters. Each one of them is an individual, a life worth saving. The reason they are killed? Because they

don’t have safe places to call home. But, there’s always something – sometimes big, sometimes small – that each of us can do

to change that.”
