Currently, there are about 1173 staff working for the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service:

- 872 Operational (Wholetime & Retained Duty System)

- 37 Reserve Firefighters

- 267 Support Staff

How to become a FirefighterWe welcome applications from all members of the community who pass our application form and interview criteria, and meet the standards of our physical, role related tests.

•No previous firefighting experience or qualifications needed •Need to meet our minimum literacy and numeracy requirements•Must be 18 years old when they are appointed, so can be 17 ½ years old when they apply. There is no upper age limit. •To acquire the skills and discipline required for a career in the Fire Service and other Services (Police, Ambulance, Army etc.), there is a Public Service course at college •Wholetime firefighter would not need to live in the Humberside area

How to become a Firefighter

However, to become a Retained Duty Firefighter (RDS), you must:

* live or work within one mile of the Retained Duty System fire station at which you wish to serve

* be able to respond within five minutes of an alarm, on foot or by vehicle at normal road speed

Once successful applicants complete their initial induction training they begin a development programme. The appointment of all operational staff is subject to successful completion of this programme, at which point they become competent firefighters. During their career they may consider specialising in other roles, or seek to progress.
