Martin Truex Jr. Carl Edwards You’re still worried about Kyle Busch’s Chase chances? Yes, and I’m apparently the only one. Everyone else is congratulating him for getting inside the top 30 in points and becoming officially eligible for the Chase, but maybe you’re forgetting that he has to STAY there. He’s 29th, 18 points ahead of Justin Allgaier and 23 ahead of Cole Whitt. Not enough? Bristol, Darlington and Richmond aren’t exactly places where you can coast and protect a cushion. Remember, Richmond has a strip of grass down the frontstretch. And Kyle hates grass? He’s been on the zero-landscape cam- paign since Daytona in February, you know. His wreck in Michigan practice last week included some unfortunate lawn maintenance. You know what they say: The grass is always meaner. In a wreck, anyway. Not so fast, Kyle. There’s work to do. ASSOCIATED PRESS/ CARLOS OSORIO 1. Bubble boy Clint Bowyer continues to hang onto 16th place in the Chase standings even after his disastrous 41st-place finish at Michigan. Bowyer, who wheels the No. 15 Toyota, remains optimistic. “There’s still time, we’re still in control of our destiny,” he said. “You’re backed up against the wall and need to win, and that picture doesn’t look pretty, if that doesn’t happen, we’re still in control.” 2. Light it up The next three races, which will decide the Chase playoff field, are all under the lights. The lineup includes Bristol, Darlington and Richmond. For those who like to watch night racing, get your fill in this stretch, because there is only one more over the last 10 races. Charlotte hosts the last night race, on Oct. 10. 3. Opportunity knocks The last three regular-season races bring opportunity for those drivers still trying to win and get into the Chase. The last six Bristol races have been won by different drivers, while Richmond boasts seven different race winners in its past seven. There hasn’t been a repeat winner at Darlington since 2006. Childress surge The three Richard Childress Racing stock cars finished 12th or better at Michigan, led by NASCAR points master Ryan Newman, who contin- ues to defy the gravity of the “win and you’re in” mantra. Newman finished as the top RCR car in eighth place, and Chase-eligible — on points. 2. Nice package Matt Kenseth’s team took full advantage of the rule change at Michigan. The No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota led 146 of 200 laps over the two-mile oval. “Did the No. 20 lead every lap?” Ford driver Sam Hornish Jr. asked after the race. “He led a lot of them, didn’t he?” Yes, indeed. 3. Rough restarts Jeff Gordon had another disappointing outing as he bid adieu to Michigan as a driver. Blame it on the restarts, which Gordon did. “Just couldn’t get going on the restarts, which is no surprise,” the 44-year-old driver said. “It happens to us every weekend.” Ryan Newman, right end of first row, was part of the first NASCAR Chase in 2004. 3 THINGS WE LEARNED AT MICHIGAN

3 THINGS TO WATCH AT BRISTOL

— Godwin Kelly, [email protected]

— Godwin Kelly, [email protected]

DID YOU KNOW?While watching the Bristol Night Race this weekend, imagine replacing the entire infield of the track with grass. That's what will happen next year following this event, as Bristol Motor Speedway is transformed into a one-time football stadium. Next year's Tennessee-Virginia Tech game, scheduled for Sept. 10, will feature about 150,000 available seats and should become the best-attended football game ever.

Your favorite Bristol memory of all time?

GODSPEAK: Dale Earnhardt crashing Terry Labonte on the last lap for the win.KEN'S CALL: I fondly recall Ward Burton suggesting Junior Earnhardt was lucky that Ward hadn't brought his shotgun with him. When will Richard Childress Racing win another race?

GODSPEAK: Yes, we might see car owner/granddaddy Richard Childress in Victory Lane Saturday night. KEN'S CALL: Doubtful, because Mr. Hunch likes Joey Logano at Bristol.
