Recent school data con- firms this. In fact, according to the US News & World Report on Education, KANU’s high school program was ranked 9th of 65 public high schools in Hawaiʻi and was consequently awarded a Bronze medal. We were cited as one of the Best High Schools in Hawaiʻi. This is the first time that KANU has been ranked in the top 10 by a nationally prestigious and credible journal! Many of our students improved from quar- ter one and as you can see, 11th and 12th grades are vying for top honors. We honor and celebrate the growth of all our students. During the makahiki season, the people gave thanks to Lono and his priests by sharing with them the bounties of the land and sea. All other trading and giving ceased until the makahiki festivities were over.

While sharing our good fortunes always results in blessings, there are certain times of the year where a spirit of giving and thanks-giving abounds. During this makahiki season let us be thankful for what we have and share our bounties with others.

SUPPORT OUR SENIORS – Support our senior fundraising efforts for their senior trip to New Zealand. Please purchase tickets from one of our seniors or through our school office. Concert features Manaʻo Company, Bruddah Waltah Aipolani, Napua Greig, Hawane Rios, ʻEkolu Mea Nui and more, along with craft vendors, a silent auction and food vendors. February 14, 2016 at Hilo Civic Auditorium. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. and concert is 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. See you there!KANI KE ʻŌ – This years Kani ke ʻŌ will be held on Friday, February 19, 2016 on our campus lawn beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at about 7p.m. ʻŌhana may bring a picnic style dinner and enjoy a beautiful and relaxing evening of mele. LIONS CLUB VISION TEST – Students in grades 2-12 who returned their consent forms received a free vision exam by The Lions Club on January 20th. Results have been mailed home. If you receive a referral letter recommending a complete vision exam for your child by an optometrist, we urge you to follow through. Feel free to pass this information on to others.KANU OPEN ADMISSIONS FOR SY 16-17 – KANU’s admission’s process for SY 2016 – 2017 is now open. Interested students should submit an admissions form by February 29, 2016 to our school office and attend an open house. Open house scheduled for February 9 and February 24, 2016 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Admission forms being accepted for students grades K-9 in SY16-17 for our on-campus program. Admission forms are available at our school office and on our school website. COMMUNITYCOLLEGE HORIZONS – Six-day “crash course” in preparing for college. Students establish personal relationships with admis-sions representatives and college counselors to help students: select colleges, write memorable essays, complete winning applica-tions, receive test taking strategies and resources and navigate the financial aid/scholarship process. Completed applications due early February 2016. Students may apply to attend the program at Amherst College in Amherst, MA (June 18-24) or at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI (July 9-15). Eligibility: Native Hawaiian, Alaskan or American Indian (proof of heritage); 3.00 GPA (in academic course); 10th and 11th grade high school students. $450 program fee includes tuition, room, meals, program materials and ground transportation.
