Tour Leaders: Paul Harmes (leader), Gerard Gorman(Local Guide & Tour manager & Driver: Norbert

With eight Naturetrek clients

Day 1 Tuesday 9th August

Fly Heathrow to Budapest – Transfer to the Kiskunsag.Area

Eight group members met with Paul at London’s Heathrow, Terminal 3 for the 8.50am British Airways flight

BA866 to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International (formerly Ferihegy) Airport. On arrival we completed immigration

formalities, collected our luggage and made our way to the arrivals hall where we were met by Gerard, our local

guide, and Norbert, our driver for the week. Before very long, Norbert had loaded our luggage into the bus, and

we were on our way south towards the Kiskunsag National Park. After about an hour we passed through the

village of Bugyi, making a stop to see nesting White Stork. Moving on south, we recorded Red-backed Shrike,

Common Kestrel and Western Marsh Harrier, before stopping at country store at Szittyourbo. Here we had a

snack lunch and local coffee, and got our first look at this sandy habitat. Essex Skipper, Meadow Brown and

Chestnut Heath butterflies were seen, as well as Straw Belle and Rose-banded Wave moths. Among the plants

here were Salvia nemorosa (Woodland Sage), Consolida regalis (Forking Larkspur), Datura stramonium (Thorn-apple)

and Elaeagnus angustifolia (Russian Olive).

From here we moved on to an area of ancient relict sand dunes, near Kundeszer. Along the way we saw a

number of European Rollers, Common Buzzard and a good number of European Bee-eaters. After a slight

detour, we walked out onto one of the dunes to scan for wildlife. It was not long before we had some distant

views of a group of 15 Great Bustards, Unfortunately, the heat haze was against us, but scoped views were had

by all. Butterflies added here included Silver-studded Blue, Brown Argus, Meadow Brown and Sooty Copper.

Common Buzzard and Common Kestrel were recorded, together with Corn Bunting. For the botanists there was

Echium vulgare (Viper’s-bugloss), and Limonium gmelinii (a Sea-lavender), a relic of a former, ancient saline habitat.

It was now time to make our way to our hotel. The Kunsagi Major is situated in the plains, some 10 minutes

from Kunpuszta. We soon settled into our rooms and freshened up, before meeting for dinner. Around the

hotel, Little Owl, Eurasian Spoonbill, Grey Heron, Barn Swallow and House Martins were seen. In addition,

there was Buff Ermine, Red Underwing and Common White Plume moths.

After our meal, Gerard outlined the next day and Paul set the moth trap.

Day 2 Wednesday 10th August

Upper Kiskunsagi National Park – Kunszentmiklos – Apaj canal & fishponds

At 6.30am, a number of group members met with Paul, to check to moth trap and identify the catch. Buff-tip,

Small Elephant Hawk-moth, Blood-vein, Barred Silver, Swallow Prominent, Marbled White-spot and Peacock

moth were all recorded for the macros, and European Corn-borer, the Pyralid Oncocera semirubella and Garden

Grass Veneer for the micros. After this the group met with Gerard, who led a bird walk around the grounds of

the hotel. European Stonechat, Northern Wheatear, Whinchat, Black Redstart and European Bee-eater were all

seen.

Following breakfast, we joined the vehicle at 9am and left the hotel, heading in a south-westerly direction. Along

the way European Roller, Red-backed Shrike, Yellow-legged Gull and Common Kestrel were all seen, as well as

good stands of Asclepias syriaca, Robinia pseudacacia (False Acacia) and Ailanthus altissima (Tree-of-Heaven). Our

first stop was north of the town of Szabadszallas, to watch a group of Red-footed Falcons, before we stopped to

scan a vast field complex. Here, there was Northern Lapwing, Green Sandpiper and Ruff. Plants included Althaea

officinalis (Marsh-mallow) and Bolboschoenus maritimus (Sea Clubrush), both growing some 500 miles from the

nearest coast, as relics of a past, saline habitat, as well as Inula ensifolia and Medicago sativa subsp. sativa (Lucerne).

Moving on, we headed towards the town of Apaj where we stopped for refreshments before continuing north to

the Apaj canal and fishponds. Along the way we saw a number of Purple Herons. Leaving the vehicle, we took a

walk along a track. On a large fishpond we recorded Ferruginous Duck, Gadwall and Red-crested Pochard and,

as we went, we disturbed a Little Bittern. We also added White-tailed Eagle, Eurasian Spoonbill, Black-crowned

Night Heron and Eurasian Hobby. Insects were active and we found Blue-tailed Damselfly, Black-tailed

Skimmer, Common Darter, Red-veined Darter and Scarlet Darter Dragonflies, as well as Red Admiral, Common

Blue, Lesser Fiery Copper and the splendid Lesser Purple Emperor [forma clytie].

Retracing the path back to our vehicle, we now took our picnic by the canal. Whiskered Tern was added as well

as Small Heath. Plants along the banks included Elaeagnus angustifolia (Russian Olive), Humulus lupulus (Hop) and

Pastinaca sativa (Wild Parsnip).

We now moved on, making a couple of more stops, before we indulged in ice creams in Kunszentmiklos before

making two more stops along the way back to our base. Lesser Grey Shrike, more Red-footed Falcons, Common

Kestrel and European Turtle Dove were added, as well as Tufted Marbled Skipper butterfly.

Day 3 Thursday 11th August

Transfer from the Kiskunsag National Park to the Hortobagy National Park.

At 6.30, we met up to check the moth trap. It was a chilly night, so the numbers of species made this morning’s

catch rather low. Nevertheless, they included Grass Eggar, Small Elephant Hawk-moth, Beautiful Hook-tip,

Double-line and Silver-Y for the macros and Rush Veneer, the Crambid Catoptria pinella, Gold Triangle, and Box-

tree Moth, in both its colour forms, for the micros. Eurasian Spoonbill, Eurasian Golden Oriole, Great Tit, Blue-

headed Yellow Wagtail and Willow Warbler were all seen by the birders.

By 9am the vehicle was packed with our luggage, and we said our farewells to the Kunsagi Major Hotel and set

off for the town of Bugyi in light rain. To the south of the town we made two stops. The first yielded up 21

Great Bustards, Western Marsh Harrier, Common Kestrel and European Roller. We also found a rather cold

Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow. In the second, we took a walk down a track. Here we had Marbled Clover, Blood-

vein and Burnet Companion moths, and Common Blue and Painted Lady butterflies. We now made our way

into the village of Bugyi for lunch, coffee and a comfort stop. Along the way, we saw Red-backed Shrike, White

Stork and European Turtle Dove, as well as Brown Hare and European Roe Deer.

After eating, we made our way towards the capital and, on the south-west outskirts of Budapest, we joined the

M0, Budapest’s orbital motorway, and then, to the north of the city, we transferred to the M3 eastwards. After a

little over an hour or so, we were approaching a service area when Gerard spotted an Eastern Imperial Eagle

taking off from a field. We stopped at the service area, and quickly started scanning for the bird. Before long, a

probable second bird was seen on an electricity tower, and all group members had distant, scoped views of the

bird. In the car park we also added Crested Lark.

Re-joining the motorway, we continued eastwards. Just before Fuzesabony, we turned south-east towards

Poroszlo, and crossed Lake Tisza. Here we recorded Black-headed and Yellow-legged Gulls, Great Crested

Grebe, Great Cormorant, Common Moorhen, Eurasian Coot and Pigmy Cormorant.

A final stop before making our way through Egyek was to check more electricity towers, where Saker Falcon had

been recorded in the past. We were not disappointed. A solitary bird was spotted in the distance, and we made

our way along a track to try and gain better views. As we went we added Western Marsh Harrier, European

Stonechat, Common Buzzard and Common Kestrel. After everyone had had good but distant views of the Saker

Falcon, we made our way back to the bus,

We now made our way into the Hortobagy National Park, continuing via Egyek, and it was not too long before

we arrived at the Tiszacsege Hotel, on the bank of the River Tisza. After settling into our rooms and freshening

up, we met up for dinner.

Day 4 Friday 12th August

Hortobagy National Park – Tiszadorogma – Kis Hortobagy – Lake Tisza

The overnight moth trapping produced a couple of new species, given the change of habitat from the Kiskunsag.

The catch included Flame Carpet, Four-spotted Footman, Common Carpet, Swallow Prominent, August Thorn

and Portland Riband Wave for the macros. Meanwhile, the micros included the Crambid Crambus perlella,

European Corn-borer and the Elachistid Ethmia quadrillella. After the initial checking, the group joined Gerard

for an early morning walk along one of the river banks, which produced Black Redstart, Barn Swallow, Common

House Martin, Wood Warbler, Willow Warbler and Kingfisher.

After breakfast, we set off towards Egyek and the Tiszadorogma Ferry. Just short of the crossing, we stopped to

explore a quiet wooded lane, an oxbow lake and canal banks. In the morning sunshine, day-flying moths and

butterflies were now on the move, with Pale Clouded Yellow, Swallowtail, Small White, Lesser Fiery Copper,

Silver-studded Blue, Lesser Purple Emperor [f. clytie] and a new butterfly for the trip, Cardinal Fritillary. Moths

included Spotted Sulphur and Four-spotted. For the birders, the oxbow lake had Purple Heron, Little Grebe and

Common Kingfisher and European Bittern.

Crossing the ferry, we spent another half hour exploring the riverside grassland and woodland. Here, Collared

and Pied Flycatchers were seen, as well as Lesser Emperor, Common Darter, Ruddy Darter and Scarlet Darter

dragonflies. Additional butterflies were Map Butterfly, Comma Butterfly, Small Skipper and Large Skipper. After

this we made our way into Tiszadorogma where we took morning coffee, during which Eurasian Collared Dove

and Yellowhammer were added.

With refreshments completed, we set off for the Kis Hortobagy, a protected grassland, wetland and woodland

area, where we took lunch. As we ate, an Eastern Imperial Eagle was seen being mobbed by other birds. With

our meal completed, we set off to explore the rough arable margins and extensive grasslands. Butterflies found

included Short-tailed Blue, Holly Blue, Pale Clouded Yellow and Eastern Short-tailed Blue, along with Silver-Y,

Five-spot Burnet, Barred Silver and Brown China-mark moths. Moving along the margins of a marsh, we made

our way towards an observation tower. Here we had good views of Common Crane, White-tailed Eagle,

Common Cuckoo, Eurasian Sparrowhawk and distant Saker Falcon. Swallowtail and Eastern Bath White

butterflies were also added.

Re-joining our vehicle, we now moved off towards Lake Tisza. Along the way, near the village of Porozlo, we

passed a field with a sizeable expanse of shallow standing water. Here we added Eurasian Teal, Northern

Shoveler, Wood Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Green Sandpiper and Common Redshank, among others. A short

stop in the village produced a roost of Long-eared Owl, in which seven or eight birds were seen and

photographed.

Our final, brief stop of the day was on the margin of the Lake Tisza causeway. Whiskered Tern, Great Crested

Grebe, Black-headed Gull, Mute Swan and Great Cormorant were all seen, as well as a large number of Blue-

tailed damselflies.

Making our way back to Tiszacsege, we paused to watch a Little Owl sitting a pile of hay bales.

Day 5 Saturday 13th August

Lake Tisza – Transfer to the Bukk Hills

Today we bid farewell to the Hortobagy National Park, but not before we had checked the moth trap. New finds

included Chocolate-tip, Marbled Minor, August Thorn and Bordered Pearl. The birders, meanwhile, recorded

Black Redstart, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Spotted Flycatcher, Common Chaffinch and Willow Warbler.

After breakfast, we began the journey north to another of this country’s vast National Parks, in the Bukk Hills.

With luggage stowed in the bus, we boarded the minibus and set off in the direction of Lake Tisza, where we

stopped on the dyke. Setting off to explore, it was not too long before we had added Heath Fritillary butterfly to

the list, as well as Holly Blue, Short-tailed Blue, Pale Clouded Yellow, Clouded Yellow, Swallowtail and Wall

Brown. The birders had Great Crested Grebe, Mute Swan, Whiskered Tern and Grey Heron, along with

European Reed Warbler and Sedge Warbler.

As we had to pass through Porozlo, we had a second look at the Long-eared Owl roost, finding three or four

birds, before stopping a second time at the wet field margin to the north. Here, in addition to yesterday’s species,

we added Wood Sandpiper, Eurasian Curlew and Common Snipe, before moving on to the town of Stzentistvan,

where we stopped for refreshments.

We now continued on our way to the Bukk Hills, making our way over the motorway and on to the village of

Cserepfalu, where we took our picnic in the shade of some Mulberry trees, in the village. As we were completing

lunch, we were well entertained by a Syrian Woodpecker, some Goldfinches drinking at a puddle, and a

Common Linnet.

Our penultimate stop of the day was in grassy clearings among trees and on quiet roadsides to north of

Cserepfalu. This was a particularly well-known spot for butterflies; we were not disappointed. Common Glider,

Holly Blue, High Brown Fritillary, Wood White, Comma Butterfly, Weaver’s Fritillary, Pallas’s Fritillary and

Large Skipper were all recorded. The birders, meanwhile, had very good views of Eastern Imperial Eagle adult

and juvenile, European Honey Buzzard and Northern Raven.

The final leg of the journey was to the village of Nosvaj and the Hotel Nomad. Just outside the village we

stopped to scan some meadows and hedgerows, but only found Yellowhammer. Arriving at the hotel, we were

met by the manageress, Barbara, who soon had us settling into our rooms, in time for a little local exploring

before dinner.

Day 6 Sunday 14th August

Tard – Cseresvaralja – N of Cserepfalu - Bogacs

The early morning moth trap yielded Mottled Beauty, Svensson’s Copper Underwing, Heart and Dart, Setaceous

Hebrew Character and the Tortrix Celypha striana. Meanwhile, the birders had great views of Black Woodpecker,

and also Hawfinch drinking in the puddles of a drained pond.

At 9am, we left the Nomad Hotel, and drove down towards Bogacs, where we turned off towards Tard, making

our first stop to explore a track leading to a sand quarry. Red-backed Shrike, Common Kestrel, European Turtle

Dove, Common Buzzard and Northern Raven were all seen, and Common Pheasant was heard. Butterflies were

particularly abundant, with Queen of Spain Fritillary, Dryad, Dingy Skipper, Great Banded Grayling, Wood

White, Heath Fritillary and Grizzled Skipper recorded. We now moved up above this site to a hill top where a

track through the arable and a hedge added Great Sooty Satyr, Wall Brown and Weaver’s Fritillary for the

butterflies, as well as Marbled Clover, Humming-bird Hawk-moth and a Praying Mantis.

Following refreshments in the village of Cserepvaralja, we looked at the lower section of a stream-side path.

Lesser Spotted Eagle was the undoubted highlight and Hornet Hoverfly, Beautiful Demoiselle and the Shield

Bug Graphosoma lineatum were also seen. Lunch was taken by an area of vineyards overlooking the village. During

the meal, Camberwell Beauty butterfly was reported, as well as Yellowhammer and Common Buzzard.

It was now time to return to the area of fields and forest margins to the north of Cserepfalu, where we had spent

a short while the previous afternoon. This time, we took a walk along a track in a northerly direction. As we went

Paul pointed out Dipsacus pilosus (Small Teasel) and Quercus virgiliana (an Oak). Along the track butterflies were

very active, and it was not too long before we saw Chestnut Heath, a large number of Silver-washed Fritillaries

which had obviously hatched in recent days, Niobe Fritillary, Common Blue, Meadow Brown, Large White and

Woodland Grayling. Raven, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Common Buzzard were seen but, in general, the

birds were staying hidden in the afternoon heat. As we progressed, some scrubby grassland produced Silver-

washed Fritillary [f. argyrea], Brown Argus and Eastern Short-tailed Blue. Lesser Purple Emperor [f. clytie], Great

Sooty Satyr and Small Skipper were also added.

The last stop of the day was just north of the village of Bogacs, at the site of an old drive-in movie theatre. Here

we began to explore the scrubby field margins and rough grassland, finding Silver-studded Blue, Map Butterfly,

Meadow Brown, Chestnut Heath, Small White, Small Heath, Holly Blue and Large Skipper butterflies, and

Silver-Y and Spotted Sulphur moths. Plants included Carlina vulgaris (Carline Thistle), and Centaurium erythraea

(Centaury). Entering some woodland with ‘Tufa’ outcrops, containing wine stores, we added Eastern Green

Lizard, Peacock and Comma butterflies and a Hazel Dormouse which was occupying an old woodpecker hole.

Raven and Jay were also noted.

It was now time to return to the Nomad for dinner.

Day 7 Monday 15th August

Hor Valley

This morning, the moth trap produced Swallow Prominent, Svensson’s Copper Underwing, Eyed Hawk-moth,

Portland Riband Wave and Bright-line Brown-eye for the macros, and the Tortrix Agapeta hamana, Meal Moth

and Box-tree Moth for the micros. Meanwhile, the early birders saw Black Redstart, Middle Spotted Woodpecker

and Hawfinch.

After breakfast we made our way back through the villages of Bogacs and Cserepfalu, stopping by the visitor

centre at the south end of the Hor Valley. Leaving the minibus, we set off to spend the morning exploring the

valley. The habitat comprised a good track, wooded hillsides and tracksides, a quarry and some grassy meadows.

The Hor stream runs right down the length of the valley. Following a sharp shower of rain, our first stop was in

a small quarry, which acted as a sun-trap as the cloud cleared, and produced some splendid, fresh specimens of

Chalkhill Blue as well as Silver-washed Fritillary, High Brown Fritillary, Queen of Spain Fritillary, Chequered

Blue, Chestnut Heath and Woodland Grayling.

As we progressed, following the stream through woodland, Allium flavum (Yellow Onion), fruiting Euonymus

verrucosus (Eastern Spindle) and Sempervivum globiferum (a Houseleek) were seen, as well as Great Banded Grayling,

Common Glider and Speckled Wood [subsp. tircis] butterflies. The woodland gave way to meadows and a little

further on, Gerard located the elusive White-backed Woodpecker, and the birders got some good views. Gerard

explained the way this particular woodpecker strips the bark from dead trees in search of beetle grubs, and

pointed out several examples of their work.

We now began to make our way back to the vehicle. Along the way we added Clouded Yellow, Swallowtail and

Common Blue. When we got back to the bus, we had refreshments in the visitor centre, followed by lunch. We

now made our way back to the Nomad, and on up the hill to some oak woodland at Sikfokut. Our main

objective here was to try to get better views of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker which, up until now, had only

provided fleeting glimpses. Although the bird was, tantalisingly, calling, it did not put in an appearance.

However, we did find a new species of butterfly, Sloe Hairstreak, as well as Dryad, Common and Holly Blue and

Woodland Grayling.

Day 8 Tuesday 16th August

Transfer to Budapest Airport via Bogacs and Szomolya – Fly London

The early bird walk recorded Middle Spotted Woodpecker, four Grey-headed Woodpeckers in the same tree, and

flight views of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. There was also European Honey Buzzard. The moth trap produced

Yellow Shell, Small Blood-vein, Jersey Tiger and Shaded Fan-foot.

Following another spoilt-for-choice breakfast, it was time to set off to Budapest. We thanked Barbara and her

family, our wonderful hosts at the Nomad Hotel, and boarded our bus to the airport. We made an early stop at

the Hor Reservoir, south of Bogacs. Birdlife here was restricted by the high water levels and a number of

fishermen. However, we had superb views of a pair of Black Storks, plus Western Harsh Harrier, Grey Heron,

Yellow-legged Gull, White-tailed Eagle, European Honey Buzzard, Eurasian Sparrowhawk and Turtle Dove. We

also saw several Ruddy and Common Darter Dragonflies. Along the edge of the lake, large numbers of Small

White butterflies were ‘puddling’ on the mud and there were a couple of Lesser Purple Emperor [f.clytie]

butterflies among them.

Our next stop was a hilltop to the west of the reservoir, near the village of Szomolya, by some orchards. A pair

of Syrian Woodpeckers provided a very good show, as did a splendid male Golden Oriole.

Shortly after joining the westbound motorway, we saw several large murmurations of Starlings, and a few

Common Buzzards sitting on the posts of the boundary fences along the road. During a break along the way, at

a service area, we had a good view of an Eastern Imperial Eagle before it took off from an electricity tower.

There were also a few Crested Larks and a European Stonechat.

At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, we said our farewells to Gerard and Norbert, before checking in

for our British Airways flight to Heathrow.
