    SPAS IN HUNGARY

Whether you just want to relaxor youre looking for a gentle curefor a specific ailment, a spa withnatural spring thermal water is aperfect vacation choice. With lit-tle exaggeration, you could saythat all you need to do is push astick into the ground anywherein Hungary and up would comethermal water, most likely withsome kind of curative properties. The geological features of theCarpathian Basin are such thatthe earths crust is very thin, so

waters rise easily to the surface.Hungary is a land of more than1,000 hot springs and enoughspa facilities to accommodate300,000 people at the same time! These spas are located in big cit-ies and smaller towns through-out the country. Some are sim-ple thermal baths serving the

local community. The Romans,no strangers to the good life, were the first to take advantageof this naturally occurring phe-nomenon, but Budapest also of-fers some of the finest exam-ples of the Turkish Bath foundanywhere. Take for instance theRudas Baths, crowned with a gi-ant oriental dome built in thedays of the Ottoman Empire. The16th-century bathhouse is popu-lar not only with sufferers of lo-comotive disorders, but also with

tourists craving a relaxing end toa sightseeing tour and even par-ty-goers in search of music, colddrinks and something differenton a Saturday night.

    A SHORT HOP

    FROM BUDAPEST

    THE DANUBE BEND

While Budapest has plenty tokeep you occupied, it is alsoblessed with a truly breathtak-ing region just 30 minutes tothe north. The Danube Bend the point at which the great riv-er takes a sharp turn southwards is a captivating place of forest-covered hills and quaint towns. Its tranquil beauty has attractedwriters, painters and sculptors. The views from the surrounding

hills are as beautiful as any youwill find in the world. The firsttown you will reach on the bendis Szentendre (St. Andrew). This was once a popular spotfor migrant Serbs fleeing theOttomans, and several 17th-cen-tury Serb Orthodox churches re-main. Artists established a colo-ny here in the early 20th century, and the narrow streets are linedwith little galleries and colorful

buildings. An exciting time tovisit is during the SzentendreSummer Festival which featuresart exhibitions and a programof theatre and music. Furtheraround the bend is Visegrad, which was for several centuriesthe royal seat of Hungary. GASTRONOMY

Traditional Hungarian cuisineis for those with hearty appe-tites. Soup is an essential start-er. Main courses are usuallygenerous and meaty, and vege-tarian options are often limit-ed. Most menus do offer fish, in-cluding local perch, and somevegetable stew, pasta, often withpotato, cabbage or curd. Themust try specialties are gooseliver, salami (spicy sausage)

and palacsinta. Fabulous des-serts, served with strong espres-so, include strudels, tortes andthe legendary Gundel pan-cakes with chocolate rum sauce.Today Hungary has 22 desig-nated wine regions, and theyall have something of inter-est to anyone who appreciates

fine scenery and wants to dis-cover Hungary first hand.A vi sit to top vi neyards andcellars can be combined withactivities such as sailing, visit-ing thermal spas, playing golfor discovering the stunningcountryside. Since Hungary isa fairly small country to visit youcan easily take in several wine-making towns in the courseof a week, either by travelling

around or making day trips fromBudapest. Where should westart? Most people have heardof Tokaj - the toast of pontiffsand tyrants alike, and famouslydubbed the king of wines andthe wine of kings by Louis XIVof France. It is one of the worldsfinest dessert wines. The historic

town of Eger, and its Bikavr(Bulls Blood) in particular, mayalso be familiar, but Hungarysother regions are also pro-ducing award-winning wines.Connoisseurs consider thered wines from Szekszrd andVillny in southern Hungary tobe the cream of the crop. Manywinemakers from these regionshave started using internationalgrape varieties, such as Cabernet

Sauvignon and Pinot Noir,to produce wines that are giv-ing some of top French namesa real run for their mon-ey. Around Lake Balaton, youwill find the Balatonfelvidk,Balatonfred-Csopak, Balaton-boglr, and Badacsony regions. No visit to Hungary is complete

For a thousand years or so, Hungarys food, like its

culture, has had an intriguing double identity, cleverly

blending eastern mystique with the traditions of the west.

Recipes were adapted to suit their own tastes, which also

gave the dishes a national flavor.
