Budapešť byla spojena ze tří měst v roce 1873 a o sedm let později národní shromáždění rozhodlo postavit novou, reprezentační budovu Parlamentu, vyjadřující svrchovanost státu. Veřejnou soutěž vyhrál , Imre Steindl, ale byly využity i plány ostatních dvou konkurentů,z nichž jeden slouží dodnes jako Etnografické Muzeum, druhý jako ministerstvo zemědělství.Stavba z vítězného plánu byla započata v roce 1885 a budova byla otevřena na počest 1000 letého výročí vzniku země v roce 1896, a dokončena v roce 1904. ( architekt budovy oslepl před jejím dokončením.) V současné době to je největší budova v Maďarsku, a druhý největší Parlament v Evropě.

Budapest was united from three cities in 1873 and seven years later the National Assembly resolved to establish a new, representative Parliament Building, expressing

the sovereignty of the nation. A competition was published, which was won by Imre Steindl, but the plans of the other two competitors were also realized, facing the

Parliament: one serves today as the Ethnographical Museum, the other as the Ministry of Agriculture.

Construction from the winning plan was started in 1885 and the building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896, and completed in 1904.

(The architect of the building went blind before its completion.) It is currently the largest building in Hungary, and the second largest Parliament in Europe.

Na jeho stavbě pracovalo tisíc pracovníků,kteří položili 40

milionů cihel, výzdoba spotřebovala za půl milionu drahokamů a 40 kg zlata.

There were about one thousand people working on its construction in which 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40 kg

gold were used.
