Research has proven that the vision of Deer and other hooved animals (ungulates) is quite different to human vision – they simply don’t see things the way we do. They have an amazing 280 degree field of view (which is much wider than the human’s 120 degree field) allowing the animal to scan the horizon for

predators. Their weaknesses are impaired visual acuity and dichromatic color vision.

Tigers and Leopards have been using their own evolutionarily perfect camo for millennia – allowing them to successfully hunt various hooved animals including elk, deer, gazelle, impala and wildebeest. Tigers and leopards are apex predators that hunt in varied terrain yet their camouflage is not at all like the mimicry sticks and leaves camouflage that many human hunters wear. Instead they use a combination of micro patterns to effectively fade into the background when at close range and macro patterns to break up the shape of their body as they move.

COLOUR & CONTRAST

Evolution has ensured the big cats are at the top of their apex – color and contrast has a lot to do with that. The base color of the pelt is one that ungulates struggle to discern while the high contrast black stripes and spots add depth to the camouflage, suggesting shadows and distance.
