Letter from the Executive DirectorI have been interviewed several times

recently about the proposed defunding of the National Endowment for the Arts on the Federal level and the effect it will have on us. You can find a video on this topic featuring two of our artist members Chris Ann Ambery and Kevin McEvoy, Director of The Atelier at Flowerfield, on our website www.huntingtonarts.org. As difficult as it is to continue this fight over the years, my experience has been that somehow the arts survive and artists continue to create. Creative people are good at solving problems, and artists continue to make art in spite of defunding and criticism. It is encouraging to live and work in an area that supports, values and encourages the arts. I applaud our elected officials…town, county and state…who support the arts. I urge anyone passionate about the arts to let their elected officials know how much the arts mean to Huntington and the Long Island community, and thank them for their continued support and funding.

Along with public support, we rely on individuals to help us to continue our programming. There are so many special ways that the membership and community support us. Whether it be as a volunteer or a charitable donation in memory of a loved one. Each and every one of these gestures is greatly appreciated and highly valued. We thank all of our donors to our year end campaign and On the Block art auction. This year we took a slightly different approach to our auction and presented it as a curated arts and culturally based exhibit. The response was enthusiastic and resulted in a successful outcome.

We continue to schedule fundraising activities to help us manage to continue our mission of servicing arts and arts organizations. Funding the arts is hard work, but we continue to do it to ensure that the arts will prosper and be available for all to enjoy.

Recently Huntington Arts Council hosted a meeting with many of Long Island’s arts councils and our program officer from NYSCA. It was encouraging to get together and collaborate to continue our good works to build the arts on LI. All of our programming at HAC and our colleague organizations has a valuable public benefit. Our programs continue to enrich lives. Our JOURNEY program nurtures the arts in our

six partner school districts. Read first hand from several educators about the positive impact this program has on the students of Long Island on page 8. In March, the High Arts Showcase, a student art show which is one of the benefits of the JOURNEY Progam, provides the chance to see the works of the next generation of artists. We take our responsibility to support these student artists seriously and have chosen the work of three high school students and featured it on the cover of this issue of the Arts Cultural News. The NYSCA Decentralization program has wrapped up its panel deliberations, and successful applicants will receive funding to help them continue to add to the arts landscape of Long Island. The annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival is well into the planning stage, and we look forward to presenting another quality season of performances. This newsletter showcases a myriad of performances and exhibitions across all genres. On May 20th we will be participating once again in the Huntington Village Art Walk. Please stop by anytime between 12-4pm. Please treat yourself to as many arts experiences as you can.

Letter From The SupervisorDear Friends:

Huntington’s distinction as the birthplace of Walt Whitman – frequently acknowledged as one of our country’s greatest poets – is just one aspect of our community’s dis-tinguished literary heri-tage. This heritage spans

from being the home of Jupiter Hammon, who in 1761 became the nation’s first pub-lished African-American poet, to fostering contemporary poets such as Northport res-ident George Wallace, named in 2003 as the first Poet Laureate of Suffolk County.

As April is National Poetry Month it is fitting that we celebrate this distinguished heritage by recognizing some of Hunting-ton’s newest poets. From 7-9 p.m. on April 23rd Walt Whitman’s Birthplace will host in cooperation with the Town of Huntington a special event in honor of teen poets from our community. This award ceremony and poetry reading will recognize those teens whose poems have been selected this year for public display in the Town’s “Poetry for the HART” Public Art Initiative, a program developed in cooperation with Teenspeak and other youth and arts agencies within the community. These teen poets will have the opportunity to share their winning poems at a reading led by an adult poet mentor.

Afterward, these winning poems print-ed on colorful placards will join those of previous years in gracing the interior of buses in the Town’s HART system. While these youthful words of humor, reflection, and sometimes profound insight are en-joyed by more than 260,000 riders annu-ally, they can also be found online on the Town’s website at www.HuntingtonNY.gov/HARTpoetry. Please join us for this special event in celebration of our community’s literary her-itage, which remains a living art form cre-ated by our friends and neighbors that still enriches our lives today.

Sincerely yours,

Performing Arts Director John Chicherio is working hard on creating another exciting roster of artists for the Huntington Summer Arts Festival. 2018 will mark the Festival’s 53rd edition. This year’s Festival opens Tuesday, June 26, 2018 with a fun and engaging Family Show. Opening week is highlighted on June 30th with a performance by The Lords of 52nd Street featuring Richie Cannata (Billy Joel’s core backing band from late-70’s through early-80’s). This is guaranteed to be a high energy entertaining show. The festival will continue six nights per week into mid-August. One big change in the works is an earlier curtain time for all performances. “We’ve had many requests to start concerts a half-hour earlier. We will likely begin Tuesday Family shows at 7:00 PM and all other concerts at 8:00 PM.,” explained Mr. Chicherio. “We believe it is a good shift and will result in larger attendance and a more enjoyable experience for our loyal base.” “Planning the Festival is like weaving a new tapestry of music, dance and entertainment each year,” says Mr. Chicherio. “We can’t disclose the remaining artists until we have signed contracts in place. At this early date, we don’t know exactly what to expect, but you can count on an eclectic mix of talented headliners & emerging artists from across the U.S. and around the world!” In addition, local and regional ensembles that have long formed the backbone of the Festival are featured, including the Huntington Community Band, the Northport Community Band, Huntington Men’s Chorus, the L.I. Dance Consortium, Plaza Theatrical Productions, BroadHollow Theatre, and others. “We are also in discussion with David Stewart Wiley about celebrating Leonard Bernstein’s centennial with the Chamber Orchestra of Long Island.” said Mr. Chicherio. “We feel it is vitally important to continue presenting superb classical concerts, performed by veterans of the L.I. Phil, at our beautiful venue in Heckscher Park.” Also look for the

2018 Huntington Summer Arts FestivalHuntington Jazz Week with a new edition of Coltrane Day in collaboration with the Friends of the Coltrane Home. The Huntington Folk Festival will celebrate its 13th year with great folk and Americana artists presented in collaboration with the Folk Music Society of Huntington. World Music will be well represented as will L.I. Spotlight concerts and other surprises. All HSAF concerts are free admission and are presented at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park at Prime Ave. & Main Street. The Northport Community Band performs five consecutive concerts on Thursday evenings at the Robert F. Krueger Band Shell in Northport Harbor. Each Tuesday features a Family show perfect for all ages. Come early on Tuesdays and join us for a fun, easy FREE craft for the children. The craft table opens at 6 before each Family show and features a new craft each week.

More information on the complete Festival lineup will be available in the coming months at www.huntingtonarts.org The HSAF is produced by the Town of Huntington and presented by the Huntington Arts Council. The Board of Directors and the Staff at HAC express their sincere appreciation to the Town Council for their support and for making this program possible. The Festival is also supported by grants from the County of Suffolk, and is made possible by the New York State Council of the Arts with support of Governor Andrew M. Arts in Education - JOURNEY

For over 30 years the Huntington Arts Council has been working with local school districts to facilitate the multicultural, arts-in-education program, JOURNEY. The goal of the JOURNEY program is to promote and support the appreciation of cultural diversity and tradition through art. There are three major components; CTLE Cultural Arts Workshops for teacher professional development, Discovery Chests, and Visiting Teaching Artists to schools. The participating school districts for 2017-18 are Commack, Harborfields, Huntington, Northport/East Northport, Plainview/Old Bethpage and South Huntington. As Arts-in-Education Coordinator I, Gina Van Bell, am getting to know the educators of the JOURNEY schools. I had conversations with teachers from the JOURNEY schools all of whom make a huge commitment to support the arts and culture in their schools. The teachers I spoke with are as follows:Jeanie Ritter, Art Teacher at Harborfields High SchoolBrian O’Neil, Art Teacher at Harborfields High School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary SchoolDena Mortell, Art Teacher at J.T. Finley Middle School in HuntingtonEsmeralda Tello, Global Studies Teacher at Huntington High School.

Meeting the Teachers of theJOURNEY Program

How long have you been using the JOURNEY program and how did you hear about it? As a partner school we have been involved in the JOURNEY program in one way or another for several years.-Jeanie Ritter and Brian O’Neil I have been attending the JOURNEY program events for about 5 years. My first event was for Asian brush painting and it was held in the Huntington HS cafeteria. I remember I didn’t know a single person that was there that night, but by the time the class was over I had made friends with art teachers from neighboring school districts. Now I look forward to seeing these people each time we attend a new class.-Dena Mortell I have been using the JOURNEY Program for almost 10 years. I heard about the JOURNEY Program and Discovery Chests from an advertisement that I encountered through the Huntington Arts Council website. The first Discovery Chest I used to enrich learning in my classroom was the Native American Chest in my American History Grade 7 class. Since then I have used multiple cultural chests to teach about China, Africa and Ancient Greece in my World History classes at the high school.-Esmeralda Tello What parts of the JOURNEY program are the most useful for you? Why? We participated in the Teacher Workshops and found these very informative; particularly the Asian Brush Painting and Clay Workshop.  Having the opportunity to experience the presentations by both of the professional artists and then participate in a hands-on activity really allowed us to develop a better understanding of their respective areas of expertise.  We were then able to share these new experiences with our students.  We have also been in contact with the artists in residence to arrange for an in-house presentation. This would not have been possible without the Arts in Education Program.-Jeanie Ritter and Brian O’Neil.

Harborfields Art Teachers Jeanie Ritter and Brian O’Niel practicing the proper brush stroke technique. The Discovery Chests have been an amazing enrichment resource in my teaching of American and World History. The artifacts and accompanying informational sources have enabled me to make learning hands-on and have brought the cultures we study in class come alive.-Esmeralda Tello

Talking about the CTLE CULTURAL ARTS WORKSHOPS:

The CTLE Cultural Arts Workshops offer 15 hours of staff development each year and are taught by teaching artists and experts from various nations. How do the CTLE Cultural Arts Workshops benefit teachers and students? When teachers participate in hands on workshops it helps them remember what it feels like to be the student.  This allows the teacher to better understand the student experience and present more relevant content in their lessons.-Jeanie Ritter and Brian O’Neil

CTLE Cultural Arts Workshop on November 15th, Day in Clay – A Multicultural Ceramic Arts Program. This workshop was held at partner JOURNEY school –

Huntington High School.

This fall I attended the “Traditions of Hawaii” workshop. Each dance routine we learned that night told a story about Hawaii’s history, and it was interesting how they use this artistic form to pass stories down to each generation. This is the workshop that inspired me to introduce Tiki Totems to my studio in art class. We discussed how the tiki totem can also tell a story through the images that are carved into it. We are creating our tiki’s in clay and each student has written a journal entry describing and detailing the story behind their sculpture. I can’t wait to exhibit these projects at our annual art show in May at the Huntington HS.-Dena Mortell

Talking about the DISCOVERY CHESTS: The Discovery Chests are culturally themed bins filled with 20-30 cultural artifacts for hands on student learning and exploration. The chests include; Ancient Egypt, Africa, China, Greece, India, Latin America, Native America and a Mixed Culture chest. These chests are provided by the Huntington Arts Council and can be delivered to each participating school. Educator, Esmeralda Tello, has been using the chests for almost a decade and has been a strong supporter of their use and benefits. In what ways do the Discovery Chests enhance lessons in your classroom? The Discovery Chests have allowed my students to think like archaeologists and critically examine the uses and functions of artifacts. Students have become actively involved in their own learning by examining artifacts in person and contextualizing and discussing each artifact with their peers.-Esmeralda Tello How do the students respond to these experiences? Can you describe a time you included the Discovery Chests in your lessons? Students have responded positively to the Discovery Chests. They are intrigued and excited when we start a new cultural unit and they pose questions surrounding an artifact that leads to class discussion. I have used the Africa Discovery Chest artifacts in group research projects, the Chinese chest in jigsaw groups where students taught their peers and students used the Greek artifacts in group presentations. Recently I used the Ancient Greece Discovery Chest in a play on Athens and Sparta, where the vases, dolls and column replicas became our backdrop, the costumes were worn by students and the musical cd’s played in the background to set the mood of the scene.-Esmeralda Tello How does this hands-on, exploratory learning benefit your students? The Discovery Chests have allowed students to discuss topics of culture in an open matter. They have posed questions surrounding the artifact, done online research and brought their findings to the class in group presentations. Students have become more actively engaged in their analysis and inquiry. -Esmeralda Tello

More included with JOURNEY In addition to the three major components of JOURNEY, the program also includes an annual student art exhibition, titled  High Arts Showcase,  held in the Huntington Art Council’s Main Street Gallery.  The show is open to 11th  and 12th  grade art students in participating districts and is exhibited in the spring. How else do you bring art and culture into your classroom? We bring art and culture into our classroom by presenting information on different periods of art history, and highlighting various cultures, as well as our own personal experiences. - Jeanie Ritter and Brian O’Neil In the past I brought art and culture into my classroom by arranging field trips to museums both in Huntington Village and New York City, but these are once a year events if the funding is available. With the Discovery Chests, artifacts are readily available throughout the school year and the exhibits come to us facilitating and enriching my lessons.-Esmeralda Tello The students enjoy the annual Tulip Festival art contest that is held in Heckscher Park each spring. The students are really inspired by the local connection to the Huntington community and showcased their talent through beautiful illustrations. In an era of digital dominance, the students really like this contest because they grew up playing in this park, as well as visiting the Heckscher Museum, and became part of the art community that showcases how beautiful Huntington is in the Spring.-Dena Mortell. Is there anything you would like to add about JOURNEY? Yes I think the JOURNEY partnership is very helpful between the Huntington Arts Council and the schools because there is a wealth of material that has already been gathered, and documented and is easily available for teachers who are willing to use it. I don’t see how any educator can bring the art of teaching alive without authentic discussion starters like the exhibits that each Discovery Chest provides. - Esmeralda Tello In conclusion: Thank you to all the educators who offered their time and shared their experiences with the JOURNEY program. We look forward to continuing our partnership with all the districts and working toward expanding our program to more schools across Long Island. For questions or for more information on how your school can participate in the benefits of the JOURNEY program, please feel free to contact me at 631-271-8423 ext. 14 or [email protected].

“Summit: Diego Garcia”Invitational ShowApril 6 –April 28, 2018Opening Reception April 6, 6-8pmClosing Reception April 27, 7-9pmSpecial Performance by Dudley Music Diego  Garcia, a Long Island born and raised painter, has had a passion for art since an early age. His journey of finding himself artistically began through graffiti and taking honors art classes at Brentwood High School. He started to take his craft seriously around the age of 17 by doing commission work and submitting to group exhibitions. The now 25 year old finds himself showing his work across Long Island and in numerous venues in New York City.

Summit is very special to me. Since my first solo show in 2015, I have embarked on a journey of self evaluation and growth. My mission to inspire youth and depict emotions comes with strong convictions and certainty. I paint children to help advocate to the viewer a message bigger than myself. Children need to be nurtured and loved, they are the future. As the years have gone by I began to notice that as I advocated this message, the imagery and idea of personifying emotions with these innocent subjects was also me subliminally working on myself. I have painted extroverted emotions and experiences of joy, wonder and exuberance. I have painted introverted emotions and experiences of loneliness, timidness and fear. My insecurity, my confidence, my message all in one. We all can relate to these feelings, both child and adult.

Dudley and I have been coordinating creative events together since we were 18 years old. In our own creative fields we have advocated for the future generations of artists and musicians and have made it our mission to push the art community and culture forward on Long Island. It is an honor to have my lifelong friend express himself alongside my work.

Juror, Beth Giacummo is an artist, curator and educator. She holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and a MFA in New Forms from Pratt Institute. Beth has exhibited her work extensively nationally and internationally; New York, Romania, Russia, Spain, Italy and Denmark.
