Happy Holidays to our Huntley Families!

It is hard to believe but we are already in December and just

around the corner is 2016. We have had a good November; we

had a great turn out at our Family Glow Walk. Thank you to

those family who came out to support this fun event. We also

celebrated American Education Week with a special event each

day from Nov. 16th – Nov. 20th. Our Student Council members

did a canned food drive with the food collected being donated

to the Salvation Army. We also had many clubs, activities and

other programs that took place before, during lunch and after-

school for the month of November. We appreciate our par-

ents, staff and volunteers for their contribution in helping to

provide a wide range of opportunities and experiences for our

students.

This year our staff have been focusing on creating a “soft land-

ing” for our students as they return to school each day by

providing positive first contacts with students, greeting them

as they come in, and making sure that our students have what

they need to have a successful day. We are also challenging

our students and staff to have a “growth mindset” and for indi-

viduals to believe that one can overcome and achieve some-

thing he/she set his or her mind to. We continue to be mindful

and incorporate “mindfulness” into our day with our PBIS

framework. We are paying attention to what is happening

here and now and positivity acknowledging students’ behaviors

and re-teaching behaviors when needed. This being said, 97%

of all our students have 0-1 office discipline referrals according

to our SWIS data. This means that the majority of our students

are doing what is expected of them and are doing and being

their BEST.

As we head into cold and flu season please be reminded of

some healthy choices and guidelines. Please keep your child

When Your Child Has a Cold

All children get colds which are caused by a virus. The virus is spread from one person to another by coughing, sneezing, touching a person, or contact with a

contaminated surface.

Since cold symptoms vary and there is no one best medicine, the best management

is to relieve the symptoms:

FEVER: Acetaminophen, drinking extra fluids.

RUNNY NOSE: Antihistamines or decongestants may help but should be used

with caution, especially for young children.

STUFFY NOSE: Same advice as for runny nose. Nasal spray may help.

COUGH: This is a frustrating and difficult symptom to control. Over-the-

counter cough medicines and a cool mist vaporizer may provide some relief.

SORE THROAT: Most are caused by a virus, few by strep infection. Throat lozenges and sprays, a cool mist vaporizer, and drinking cool liquids will help

relieve the discomfort.

Colds usually last 7-10 days. CALL YOUR CHILD’S DOCTOR if your child

Has a cold lasting longer than 10 days.

Has severe pain in the face or forehead.

Has ear pain or drainage.

Has a fever above 102 degrees.

Has shortness of breath.

Has a cough or wheezing that won’t go away.

You may wish to consider keeping your child home if he/she is feeling too ill to

participate in their school day.

Appleton Area School District’s (AASD) elementary English Language Arts (ELA)

curriculum is based on Wisconsin’s state standards. To promote the application of

the standards, this month’s Literacy Corner will focus on strategies to grow your

child’s vocabulary through every day activities.

Growing Vocabulary

Reading is a lifelong skill that will enable children to read for fun, as part of a job, or to

gain knowledge. One way to giving your child a great start for reading and writing is to

promote the growth of their vocabulary through opportunities at home. Over time many

studies have shown that students who enter school with a strong vocabulary background

will have more success with academics.

Here are a few ideas on ways to increase vocabulary at home with your school age child(ren):

Involve your child in language rich, high level conversations. Remember to relate new words

to words they may already know to help them create an understanding of the word’s mean-

ing.

Ask your children to tell you stories and ask questions to encourage their use of new words.

For example, if they say, “it was very cold,” you can ask, “was it in the artic?” This allows

children to hear new words and begin to integrate them into their own speaking vocabulary.

Talk out loud to your young children about every day routines using specific language. “Now

I am going to put on my shoes. First my left shoe, now my right shoe.” Or “Now that we put

the dough on the cookie sheet, let’s put the cookies in the oven.”

Play games that encourage the use of words and new vocabulary. Board games, such as

Scrabble and Bananagrams are great for older children. Utilize the power of your phones

and tablets by downloading educational apps that allow children to play with words.

Reading books that introduce new words will also help build vocabulary. Choose books that

are of high interest and contain some (not too many) new vocabulary words. Remember to

read non-fiction books as well as story books, and point out the new words as you read and

discuss.

What’s going on in Physical Education class? This month in Physical Education we will be learning about Nutrition. Students will learn about the food groups, healthy foods to eat, hydration, benefits of exercise, and risk factors associated with not eating healthy and not exercising. Please encourage your child to make healthy choices at home and while dining out.

Notes and Reminders:

Thank you Recess Buddies for all your hard work teaching organized games at recess and demonstrating your leadership skills. We will have a celebration lunch on Monday Dec. 21st.

There will be NO Intramurals Dec. 14-18 due to Talent Show set up and preparation. We will resume the following week. We will be having a pancake breakfast for member on Monday Dec. 21 at 7:30. Mrs. R and Mrs. Riehle will be making the pancakes. Students are asked to bring something to compliment the meal---fruit, juice, napkins, plates, etc. Watch for a note to come home soon.

Medical Excuses If your child needs to be out of Physical Education class for more than 2 days for any medical reason, please send a doctor’s note. If your child is going to be out for a long length of time-- for let’s say a broken leg-- please ask the doctor what your child can do. (Ex. Dribble a ball from a chair, etc.) It’s hard for kids to sit and watch their peers having fun working on their skills. Most of our activities can be adapted so they are able to safely participate in class.

Fuel Up to Play 60 –

Poster Contest- Hailey Smith was the winner of the FUTP60 Poster Contest. She won a life-sized Morgan Burnett stand-up.

Parents, students and family members are encouraged to join the Fuel Up to Play 60 Huntley team at fueluptoplay60.com. Click on “Join Us” if you are new or just “log in”. There will be plenty of opportunities to learn more about wellness by participating in some fun physical activities and nutrition plays. Students can earn some cool prizes for themselves or for our school. Check it out!

Touchdown Tuesday Recess was a huge success. FUTP60 members and staff ran football stations at recess to get kids active while supporting the Green Bay Packers.

The FUTP60 team will be ringing the bells for the Salvation Army on Dec. 21 from 4-6 at Shopko on Northland Avenue. Thank you to the FUTP60 team for helping to make a difference in the community!
