Serving those who have served is an honor and privilege at the Exchange. The Hurlburt Field Exchange proudly salutes the 53,000 local men and women who have retired from the armed service and we are excited to share our newly renovated store and expanded food options in the food court. Under one roof, you will now find the Exchange with Popeye’s Chicken, Charleys Philly Steak and Subway. In addition, the Exchange will house Starbucks®, GNC®, Patriot Outfitters™, Alterations and Cartouche Jewelry and Coin Shop. In an effort to bring all operation under one roof, the Milirary Clothing Sales will now be collocated inside the Main Store with all of the same great selection.

For the annual “Still Serving” event, the Exchange will offer the annual sidewalk sale, vendor demos and special offerings throughout the store. We are excited to show off our new Be Fit Center

with expanded selection in athletic shoes and clothing, new additions in our Prestige Cosmetics, expanded selection of men’s and ladies accessories, a brand new Out Door Living and Garden Shop and our expanded sporting goods department with the addition of a full Firearms Shop.

Retirees have the privilege to shop in store and on line at ht tps://w w w.shopmyexchange.com/ for an expanded selection of what might not be available in all Exchange locations. The Hurlburt Field Commissary is under new management since Mr. Jack Spence has joined the ranks of the retired. He will be dearly missed, but your new store director is Ms. Kim Jackson. Ms. Jackson is from this area since her father retired from Eglin AFB. However, after she graduated from Niceville High School, she moved to Panama City where she started her career at the Tyndall AFB commissary, and has worked at NAS Jacksonville, Orote NS in Guam, and NAS Whiting Field. She has 30+ years of experience in the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) and a Bachelor’s degree in Business. She is very proud to be back home and plans

to provide you with the exceptional service you deserve and expect at your commissary.

AIR FORCE ENLISTED VILLAGEThe Air Force Enlisted

Village (AFEV) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides a safe, secure home for surviving spouses of retired enlisted airmen.

AFEV operates Bob Hope Village, an independent living community in Shalimar, Fla. in close proximity to Hurlburt Field and Eglin AFB, and Hawthorn House, an assisted living and memory support residence located on the Bob Hope Village campus.

Residents enjoy worry-free living while sharing memories of military life, as well as a multitude of activities and other conveniences. For residents in financial need, AFEV offers a benevolence fund program.

For more information about AFEV, Bob Hope Village or Hawthorn House, please call (850) 651-3766, email [email protected], or visit www.afev.us.

The Library is moving! While our building is being renovated to better serve you the library will be temporarily located at 552 Hamby Pl. (the old arts and crafts space). We can still meet all of your recreational reading and viewing needs with the latest books, audio books, movies, and TV shows as well as local newspapers, magazines, and the NY Times best sellers. What we don’t have we can get for you with our Interlibrary loan program. And it’s free for all military ID card holders regardless of status or branch of service.

Our knowledgeable staff is here to help you find what you need and to ensure you are able to access all the resources available to you including e-books and databases such as Ebsco’s small engine repair, A to Z Databases (great for researching people and companies) or Heritage Quest for genealogy research.

We also have Wi-Fi, laptops, and desktop computers for you to use. You can scan, fax and print for free (limited). If you need some technology help, just ask. You can bring in your devices and our computer tech will help you during one of our “Appy” Hours or you can call and set up a one on one appointment.

Stop by and see us at 552 Hamby Pl. or give us a call at (850) 884-6266. We are open Monday thru Thursday, 8am to 7pm, Fridays 8am to 3pm, and Saturdays 9am to 1pm. You can also check us at out at www.commandolibrary.com.

been in a while, it’s a good time to come and check them out. The newest program just started 1 June of this year and is called the “YES” campaign. This is an initiative that points out Your Everyday Savings “YES”! We are lowering prices on many of our most frequently purchased items. Our goal is to improve your everyday savings on the products that are most important to you, the patron. There is an assortment of items throughout the store which can be identified by an orange YES! Label beneath the item. These are not promotional items, they are in addition to the promotional items that are placed at the end of each aisle on what we call EndCaps. Plus, if a YES! item does go on promotion, it will be reduced even further! While you may find off-base grocers with lower prices at times, we have set these prices so they will be lower year-round. Over the course of a year, the savings will be over what you can find in the market.

Another program for all of us who have to take care of their health. It is called the “GNP” campaign. The “GNP” General Nutrition Program has small plastic signs underneath the items that show you the nutritional information you may need, such as “Low Sodium”, “No added Sugar”, “Low Fat”, “High Fiber”, “Organic”, and “Gluten Free”, depending on your personal health needs. It makes finding the nutritional items you need a lot easier.

Your commissary has also added “Store Brand” products to the assortment. Many patrons requested that the commissary carry items like the off-base store brands, so DeCA went the extra mile to have items made specifically for the commissary. These brands are “Freedom’s Choice”, which are food items, “Top Care”, for Health & Beauty items, and “Home Base”, which are non-food items such as paper towels, and plastic baggies for example. These commissary brands are sourced directly from our suppliers, so DeCA can buy the items at a lower cost than national brands and pass the savings on to you.

We also offer bulk items for those who like to buy in bulk. We get a new assortment to choose from each month so there are always new things to try in this area. We have the bulk items located on the first aisle after the produce department. These items are bigger packages of everyday items, such as detergent, candy, vegetables, spices, canned goods, and a lot more. If you like to buy in bulk, you have to try this section.

For Retiree Appreciation Event Days, your commissary will hold a sidewalk sale with items reduced to great prices to show how much we appreciate you. It is like the “CASELOT SALE” with the deals and the coupons, but you don’t have to buy items in cases anymore. You can get “case lot” prices on individual items so you can get a lot more for your money. Mark the dates on your calendar so you don’t miss this event, 27 thru 30 September. We appreciate our retirees for their service.

Hurlburt Field submitted a Community Commons project funding request for a renovation of the current Community Center, Velocity Café, and the Commando Library. The submitted floor plan (pictured on the right) makes alterations to the current Commando Library, Velocity Café kitchen and interior corridor, adds a Rickenbacker coffee café, outdoor dining area, and relocates the children’s multipurpose room. We are awaiting confirmation of secured APF funds to begin the construction. Once started, construction is projected to take approximately 9-12 months. During the construction period, the Library will be moved to the Auto Hobby Shop and Plaque & Trophy Shop building (552 Hamby Place, Bldg. 90612).

CHANGE is COMING!

HURLBURT FIELD GUEST ACCESS

LANDING ZONE, VELOCITY CAFE, & COMMANDO LIBRARY

NEW RULES FOR GETTING YOUR GUESTS ON HURLBURTDue to recent changes in policies, Hurlburt Field has suspended

the Trusted Traveler program. This applies to all individuals desiring base access. We are no longer allowing a person to vouch for all the occupants inside the vehicle, therefore all installation gates are now conducting 100 percent hands-on ID checks of all vehicle occupants.

Here are some helpful hints to better assist you with getting your guests on base in a reasonable time. If you have a government email account you may send the Visitor Control Center an email to our distribution list 1 SOSFS/VCC located on global or [email protected]. Large parties will be provided with an Entry Authorization List (EAL). This list is for 10 or more people that the approved sponsor vouches for. The EAL will allow your guests to go directly to any gate and bypass having the Visitor Center. The guests will provide proper identification, and the Security Forces personnel will verify that they are on the EAL. The Visitor Center will also provide you with the documents to generate the EAL. If you do not have access to a government email you can always stop by the Visitor Center and we would be able to provide the same assistance as long as you possess the credentials to sponsor someone on base. We ask that you give us your guest information no less than a week in advance. We are open Monday through Sunday from 6am to 10pm. Once all of your guests have been vetted and cleared, we will call you to let you know that everything is good to go.

Our primary job at the Visitor Control Center is to allow authorized personnel base access by properly verifying their identity. We can give out two types of passes, one is a visitor’s pass that is good for up to 30 days and the second is a long term care provider badge good for up to a year. Prior to issuing a visitor pass here are four easy steps to follow to help your guest gain access to Hurlburt Field:

STEP ONE: Either you or your guest can go to http://dbids.dmdc.mil website. Then click on pre-enroll and enter all the guests’ information. Once all the information is entered, your guest will receive a six digit code or scan bar. Either print the scan bar or write down the six digit code, bring that into the Visitor Control Center and we will verify all the information.STEP TWO: Have the sponsor present while issuing the pass.STEP THREE: Have a valid State issued ID or approved government documents.STEP FOUR: Have valid vehicle registration and proof of current insurance if your guest is driving on base.FINALLY: You and your guest can go on base and play a round of golf, bowl, visit the beach and dine.

The second type of pass is a long term care provider badge which can be good up to a year. Eligible personnel are those who are identified by the sponsor to provide any life care assistance. Some examples are medical, driving, grocery shopping and any other disabilities you may need help with. For further assistance on the long term care provider badge please call us at 850-884-2310; our office hours are 6am to 10pm seven days a week.

Finally, once your guests are properly identity proofed and enrolled into DBIDS, the process is made easier to issue a visitor’s pass. If you plan on traveling around the country or visiting family and friends who live near a military installation, just by following the four steps listed above, your information will always be in the DBIDS system. It’s just that easy.

For more up-to-date information, please pick up a copy of the UP + About magazine or visit us online at myhurlburt.com.

take a bucket of balls to the driving range to work on your golf swing.

An exciting new era arises for our base as the revitalized green continues its stride toward professional grade—this time, from the inside-out. Golf Course manager, Jason Woodling describes the makeover as a complete demolition of the aged irrigation system. “It’s been replaced by a double valve system with rough lines running through the entire course—allowing us to provide routine maintenance that will ensure a long-lasting foundation and constantly improving greens,” Mr. Woodling said. It’s the perfect complement to the salt-water tolerant paspalum grass that very few courses in this region offer but is preferred by the pros.

The full renovation process began in February 2017 by tearing up and replacing the landscape little by little to replace each valve under the course. As a convenience to their loyal members, the golf course avoided full closure during the nine month construction by closing only 9 holes at a time alternating weeks so the avid golfers would be able to get their fix seven days a week.

Remodeling of the indoor area is now complete for a full-spectrum fresh start for Gator Lakes. From floor to ceiling, the Pro Shop is the perfect place to get anything you need to improve your look, or your game!

You can take lessons from golf pro Randy Stevens right on our course. Whether you are picking up a club for the first time or need a few pointers on your swing, Randy will be able to help you reach your golf goals.

Another golf newcomer and fellow Gator Gal, Lisa Haggett, had great things to say about Oasis Café. “Before or after our game, we always make it a point to stop in.” Haggett said. “The staff is so friendly and we can actually choose healthy food!” The on-site restaurant offers a mouth-watering menu for breakfast and lunch, 7 days a week. With a view of the flight line and the option to sit inside or out, you will want to make time to visit Oasis Café. You can find their menu on our website www.myhurlburt.com to see their monthly specials and plan your meal for tee time.

For Gator Gal Pod Frease, a veteran golfer from Colorado, the changes at Gator Lakes Golf Course were the determining factor for her continuing membership in 2018. “When I golfed here for the first time about a year ago, I almost stopped at hole 9 and left. It was like golfing on a pile of dirt.” Frease started noticing the promise of renovation take place and decided to stick around to see the improvements. The Gator Gals encourage women of any skill and age level to try out their golf game or even just have a day out to laugh and make friends. Please contact Denise Knuth at [email protected] for further details.

Prompt reporting of a deceased military annuitant’s death can help avoid delay and possible financial hardship to surviving family members of executors, who will be required to return any unearned payments of the decedent’s annuity pay. Be sure to let your survivors know that your (SBP Annuitant) death will need to be reported to DFAS or you can contact our office at (850) 884-2686.

SURVIVOR BENEFITS

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Signs and symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.

Certain people are at greater risk for serious complications if they get the flu. This includes elderly people, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

For our senior population, the seasonal flu can be very serious, even deadly. Ninety percent of flu-related deaths and more than half of

flu-related hospitalizations occur in people age 65 and older. Because of this, the aforementioned population is considered “High Risk.”

In order to ensure you have the best protection available against this rapid changing virus, the 1 SOMDG provides influenza immunization to all our beneficiaries. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you start having flu-like symptoms.

Follow these basic steps during this upcoming flu season to mitigate any chance of catching “the flu”

• Get your flu shot • Practice good hygiene• Monitor for any signs and

symptoms of infectionIf you have any questions please

contact your local Public Health office (850) 881-1528.

The RAO currently has four volunteers (enlisted, officer and retiree spouse) in the office and we are looking for more volunteers. The office is manned from 9am to Noon, Monday thru Friday, except for down days and holidays. Working in the RAO is not that difficult as we mostly direct retirees to the experts in the building. What we really enjoy is helping people.

So if you are interested in volunteering at the RAO please email us at [email protected] or call 850-884-5443 between 9am and Noon, Monday thru Friday, and if no one answers, please leave a message. We are looking for more volunteers, so why not make a difference and join our team.

The RAO has a page in the 1st Special Operations Force Support Squadron’s UP + About monthly magazine, so pick up the magazine and find out what’s happening at Hurlburt Field.

Finally, when you get this newsletter, which is being mailed to more than 13,000 retirees and widows, and you would like to comment on something in the newsletter, please call or email the RAO.
