Golf News with Joe Titus

Etiquette News

Hawthorn Woods C.C. prohibits the use of our golf course cart paths to non-golfing pedestrian use. It is far too dangerous for these paths to be used for walking dogs, baby strollers or simple exercise walking. These paths are used frequently by heavy maintenance equipment and golf carts however to most immediate danger is from golf balls flying in from different directions. We appreciate your compliance with this policy as it is in the best interest of everyone’s safety.

As the season continues in full swing, I would like to remind everyone that golf etiquette has always stated that (we) as players should leave the golf course in better shape than we found it. So, please remember and make a conscience effort to:Rake BunkersRepair Balls MarksFill DivotsKeep carts 30 yards away from greens

On The Course with Scott Hillyard

It’s hard to believe that July is here already. This is when we hit the dog days of summer and routine course maintenance is the main priority. Along with the basic mowing and bunker raking, we try and pre-pare the turf for the stretch run of summer. Nutrient applications are minimized on fine turf to discourage excessive growth, reduce disease pressure, and ulti-mately provide the playing surfaces desired. We try and hit our maintenance peak in late June with the member-guest, and then sustain that until aerification in September. As a superintendent, these are the chal-lenging, yet exciting times. Peak turf conditions never allow for a slow day. G1341 Thus far in the season, temperatures have generally been moderate to cool, and while we have had some rain, it hasn’t been overwhelming. This has allowed for us to have generally dry condition and low stress turf. I can’t believe this will remain for the duration of the season. At some point we will encounter stressful stretches that will require daytime irrigation, either

via sprinkler heads or hoses. Our course is a difficult place to balance water. Very often low areas remain wet while mounds cook in the midday sun. The best way to find a middle ground is closely monitored applications of water.

One last note, if you care for your own lawn and follow the holiday schedule for fertilization, July 4th is your next application. Just make sure you pick a cooler day and get that product watered in asap (fertilizer is a salt that has potential to burn turf). And if you have had grub problems in the past, July 1 is a standard application date for a preventative product. Call me if you have any questions. Stay cool and see you on the course.
