National Pipe Thread Standard

Thread Farm

The loper on NPr threads allows them to form a seal when torqued as the flanh of the threads comprm ogainst eoch other, asopposed to straight fhread fillings or compression fillings in which the threads merely hold the pieces together cnd do nol providethe seol. Howmr 0 dearonce remains between the cresls and rools of the threads. resulting in a leakage around this spireL Thismeans thot HPl fillings mUSI be mode leak free with the aid of thread seollo~e or 0 fhread seolant tompound. (The use of lo~e orseolont will also help 10 limit corrosion on the threads, whkh (cn make future disassembly nearly impmible.l

There is elsa 0 semi-compatible variant called NPTf or Dryseol, de~igned to provide a more leak·flee seal without the u~e of Teflontope ar other seolent compound. NPTf threads are the some basic shope but with cresr end loal heighrs adjusted for on interferencefit, eliminating the ~pirol leakage path.

Sametime~ NPJ rhreods are leferred to o~ MPT (Mole Pipe Thread), MNPI, ar NPT (M) for mole (exfernol) threads and FPT (FemalePipe Thread), FNPl, or NPJ (F) for female (internal) threads. An equivolenr designation is MIP (Mole iron pipe) and FIP (Femaleiron pipe).

Aclassification system exists for ease ef manufacture and interchangeability of fabricated threaded items. Most (but certainly notolll threaded items ore mode to a classification standard (oiled the Unified Strew 'hreod Standard Series. This system is analogous to the fits md with assembled ports.

Unified Thread Standard

The standord designation for 0 UIS thread is 0 number indicoTing the nominal (maior)diameter of the thlead, followed by the pilch measured in threads per inrh. For diem·eters smeller than Vt inch, on integer number defined in the standard indimtes thediemeter. For all other diameters, the inch figure is gi~en.

Designotion

The Unified Thread Standard IUTS) defines 0 standard thread form andseries-along with allowances, tolerances. and designations-for screw threadscommonly md in the United Slares and Canodo. II has the some 60° profile as theISO metric screw thread used in the Jes! of the world, but the (horoclelisric dimensions of eoch U1S thread (ouler diameter and pilch) wele chosen as on inch froctionlother thon 0 round millimeter ~clue. The UTS is currently (onlrolled by ASMEjANSIin the United Steles.

(lass 1 threeds ore leaseiy lilling threads intended for ease of ossembly or use in a dirty environment.

(lass 7 threeds ore the most common. They ore designed to maximize s!rength considering typical machine shop capability andmachine prO(tice.

Class 3 threeds are used for closer tolerances.

Thread doss refers to the acceptable range of pitch diameter for any given thread. The pitch diameter is shown as d2 in figure1 aba~e. There ore severol methods that ore used to measure the pitch diameter. !he most common method used in produrtion isby wey of a Go·NoGa gouge.

Pipe thread designations

Pipe thread sizes

These standard pipe threads are formally referred to by the followingsequence of bloc~s:

• the words "Pipe thread",• the document number of the standard (e.g., "ISO 7" or "EN

10226"1• the symbollof the pipe thread type:

G'"' externol.inlernal parallel (ISO 228)R'"' externollaper (150 7lRp '"' internal parallel (ISO 7lRc '"' internol taper (ISO 7l

• the thread size

Alist of 15 thread sizes is defined by the standards, ranging from1/16 to 6. The size number was originally based on the inner diame·ter measured in inches (25.4 mm) 01 a steel tube for which the threodwas intended, but is in the modern metric version of the standardsimply a size number.

The¥ con be combined into two types of joinl1:• Jointing threads: These ore pipe threods for joints mode pressure-light by

the moting of the threads. They always use a loper exlernolthreod, but conhove either porollel 01 toper internal threads. (In Continental (urope, toperinternal pipe threads are not commonly used.)

• longsuew threads: These are parallel pipe threads used where a pressure'tight joint is achieved by the compression of a salt material (gos~et) on tothe surface of the external thread by tightening a bac~nut against a soc~et.

The major diameter listed is the auterdiameter of the external thread. fora taper thread. it is the diameter atthe "gouge length" from the smallend of the thread. The toper is "1 to16", meaning that for each 16 mmincrease in the distance from the end,the diameter inueases by 1 mm.

Two types of threods ore distinguished:• Pcrollelthreods, which hoye a constant diameter. (6)• Toper threods. whose diameter increoses or decreases along the length of

the threod. (R)

For both the toper and the parallel pipe threads, the Whitworth thread lorm isused. which has the following {horoCleristics:• symmetrical V·threod in which the angle between the f10nh is 55"

(meOSUJed in on axial plane)• one·sixth of this sharp Vis truncated at the top and the bottom• the threads are rounded equally at uests and roots by circulor orclend ton·

gentiolly with the flonh• the theofetkol depth of the thread is therefore 0.64times the nominal pitch
