Two of our choirs performed at the CCSD Advanced Choral Festival. Each group sang three pieces, two in different languages. Concert Choir earned an Excellent rating (II) and Women's Choir earned a Superior rating (I-highest score possible). Both choirs also earned a Superior in their sight reading. They have all worked very hard and represented our school well. -Lhara Groberg

Las Vegas students earn race visit in NASCAR design contest By MEGHIN DELANEY / Las Vegas Review-Journal
March 4, 2018 - 5:31 pm
About 50 students from Hyde Park Middle School Academy of Science and Mathematics got what is likely a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Pennzoil 400 NASCAR race Sunday.
The students earned their trip through a collaboration between the Clark County School District Police Department, the district’s school-community partnership officer and NASCAR’s Fuel for Success program. It’s the sixth year a Clark County school has been part of the program, school police officer Robert Mayer said.
In teams of two or three, students designed their own mini race car. More than 500 students at the school participated in the program before the winners were whittled down. The program directly ties into lessons on science, technology, engineering and math (commonly referred to as STEM), but there’s a twist: each student also secures an egg in each race car, attempting to keep it from breaking.
That’s where school police get involved. “The race cars must have a passenger safety component,” Mayer said.
On Sunday, students were bused into the pit before the race began, getting an all-access tour and a chance to visit with Shell/Penske driver Ryan Blaney before the race. Blaney answered student questions, including how drivers stay fit and the importance of safety in the cars.
Fuel For Success
This year was the first year Hyde Park participated in the Fuel for Success program which gives students the opportunity to learn and practice math and science concepts while constructing a mouse trap powered car. We held races of the cars and the winners were taken on a field trip to the Pennzoil 400 NASCAR race earlier this year. Only the neighborhood students participated in this once in a lifetime competition and were able to tour the pit area with drivers Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano before the race. As a culminating activity, the Las Vegas City Council honored the winners and teachers, Mr. Galardy, Ms. Lamar, and Mr. Pineda and students Jessica Leach, Samantha Manansala, Dayane Navas-Morales, Matthew Lizalde Lopez and Kendall Robbins.

Hello Panther Nation,
Your band department had a very successful year at regional and national festivals. Our varsity band traveled with choir, orchestra, and guitar to Anaheim and brought home the best in festival trophy while your symphonic band traveled to New York City bringing home a silver medal in the middle school division. We thank you for your support and look forward to giving you another year of success in the 2018-2019 school year.

National Shakespeare Quote Contest
Please congratulate sixth grader Coco Zhang for being Scholastic's Grand Prize winner in their National Shakespeare Quote Contest! Students chose a Shakespearean quote and wrote a paragraph about what it means to them. Coco won two Shakespeare libraries-one for herself and for our classroom! She also won a copy of The Shakespeare Book for every student in her ELA class!
Letters About Literature
Before winter break, my 6th graders wrote letters for the annual "Letters About Literature Program" (The Library of Congress National Reading-Writing Promotion Program). So happy to say that three of them, Diva Saxena, Sanjeev Chundu, and Vanita Indrakumar all advanced to the state judging and Diva was the second place winner for Nevada and was honored with an award at a special ceremony on May 4th.
In case you are wondering, the students wrote a letter to an author of a book that made a big impact on them in some way. The author could be alive or deceased. -Diva wrote to Holly Goldberg Sloan regarding her book, Counting by 7's -Sanjeev wrote to William Kamkwamba & Bryan Mealer for their book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind -Vanita wrote to Rebecca Skloot for her book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Please congratulate all for such a big accomplishment.
