How to Select Hydraulic Cylinders and Handling Precautions

External and internal drawings are available for all models.

● While the cylinder is operating, the output must be 70 to 80 % of the maximum output specified in the specifi-cations.

How to determine the output 1

● Upon request, 5000 kN or larger cylinders and even those that are not listed in the catalogue can be manu-factured. Please contact us for further information.

● Use a VC-70 quick coupler that eliminates loosening if a coupler is frequently removed or is subject to vibra-tion (see page 170).

● If the impact pressure is high (e.g. punchings), do not use S-1, S-2, and ROC couplers.

● Securely and completely connect the couplers.Do not connect or separate the couplers while pressure is applied.

● If pressure is likely to be applied to the inside of the cylinder due to the ambient temperature, use the pres-sure elimination accessory to remove pressure before connection.

● Select a cylinder whose stroke is longer than that to be required.

How to determine the stroke2

● Riken products must be used at an ambient tempera-ture of 0 to 40 °C. In the case of cylinders that need a low volume of oil, the internal pressure may increase depending on the ambient temperature. In this case, a quick coupler or a one-touch coupler may not be able to be connected.

● During operation, the hydraulic oil temperature must be within 5 to 60 °C.

● Riken products are designed for indoor use (except some products).

Operating environment6

● If a cylinder that works normally with self-sealing cou-plers (S-1R, S-24R, S-5R) stops suddenly, the most likely cause is looseness (a gap) between the couplers.

Tighten the couplers again using a tool if a gap exists.

Handling Precautions7

● Avoid using the whole stroke of the cylinder. (Avoid abutting by using the whole stroke.)

● A strong cylinder (see pages 34 to 36) is recommend-ed if the cylinder is frequently used. Please contact us for further information.

● Cylinders are classified into the single-acting type (load-return, spring-return) and the double-acting type (hydraulic-return) according to the return function.

● Load-return types have no return function. An external force is required to return the piston.

How to determine the cylinder type: single-acting or double-acting3

If attaching a heavy jig or the like to the piston, select a pump with a falling-by-self-weight prevention valve. Other-wise, there is a danger of sliding of the piston at a speed which the pump cannot handle or caused by the weight of the jig, etc. when the pump does not work.

When using cylinder parts such as caps, be sure to screw them completely. When they are not screwed completely and also used frequently, the thread may be damaged, and accordingly they may be broken off or not be able to be removed. If the orientations of cylinder parts such as a cylinder base and clevis need to be aligned, please let us know your request.

The cylinder speed must be within the follow-ing speed specifications. Otherwise, the equip-ment may be damaged or scattered matter may cause injury.[Standard type] Under no load condition: 500 mm/s max. At 70 Mpa: 30 mm/s max.[Strong type] Under no load condition: 1000 mm/s max. At 70 Mpa: 50 mm/s max.

● If the pump is used with an electric pump , select a pump suitable for the application referring to the cylin-der speed table (on page 226).

How to determine the cylinder speed 4

● The cylinder should be loaded vertically. ● The allowable eccentric load is within 2.5 % of the load

specified in the specifications. ● The collar thread must be generally used to secure the

cylinder with a flange or the like (see page 49). ● The cap should always be used when the load is

received directly by the piston. In addition, use cylinder parts (see pages 48 to 53) according to the application.

How to determine the mounting and securing methods5

● The return spring of a single-acting cylinder generates force to return the piston only. In addition, the return time varies depending on the hose length, etc.

● Select a double-acting type if the cylinder is frequently used or if pull output is required when a heavy jig is attached to the piston.

Use the whole surface of the cylinder bottom on hard flat plane so that the jack supports the load stably.

The LF series cylinders have no piston stop ring. If the piston protrudes over 10 mm (beyond the stroke-end indicating groove), it will be ejected causing oil leakage. Moreover the cylinder may need repair.
