When the secondary pump is off, there is no circulation in thesecondary circuit; the whole flow rate produced by the primarypump is by-passed through the separator.
With the hydraulic separator, it is thus possible to have a productioncircuit with a constant flow rate and a distribution circuit with a variable flow rate; these operating conditions are typical of modern heating andai r-condi t ion ingsystems.
Operating principe
When a single system contains a primary production circuit, with itsown pump, and a secondary user circuit, with one or moredistribution pumps, operating conditions may arise in the systemwhereby the pumps interact, creating abnormal variations in circuitflow rates and pressures.
The hydraulic separator creates a zone with a low pressure loss, which enables the primary and secondary circuits connected to it tobe hydraulically independent of each other; the flow in one circuitdoes not create a flow in the other if the pressure loss in thecommon section is negligible.
In this case, the flow rate in the respective circuits dependsexclusively on the flow rate characteristics of the pumps, preventingreciprocal influence caused by connection in series. Therefore, using a device with these characteristics means that theflow in the secondary circuit only circulates when the relevant pumpis on, permitting the system to meet the specific load requirementsat that time. Three possible hydraulic balance situations are shown below.

Construction details
Isolating the air vent valve
In flanged separators, the air vent isisolated manually, using a shut-off ballvalve. In threaded separators, however, the air vent body is automatically isolatedby the built-in valve, which closes whenthe air vent body is removed.
Dirt removing element
A vital function of the hydraulic separatoris carried out by the dirt removingelement inside the device. This makes itpossible to separate and collect anyimpurities which may be present in thesystem.
These impurities are removed by meansof the drain valve, which can beconnected to a discharge pipe, placedat the bottom of the separator.
Insulation
Hydraulic separators are available complete with a hot preformedinsulation shell. In the flanged series, up to DIN 100, the insulationis made of a shell in expanded polyurethane foam coeated with analuminium layer. In the threaded version the insulation is made of apre-formed shell in double density closed cell expanded PEX.This insulations ensures not only perfect heat insulation but also thetightness required to prevent atmospheric water vapour fromentering the unit. For these reasons, this type of insulation can alsobe used in cooling water circuits, as it prevents the formation ofcondensate on the surface of the valve body.
Hydraulic characteristics
The hydraulic separator should be sized according to the maximumflow rate value at the inlet. The selected design value must be thegreatest between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit.
