Underwater propeller repairs
When damage to propellersoccurs due to impact with
ice and other debris we can helpyou, even if the damage is quiteextensive. Our teams can restorethe propeller’s balance and effi-ciency.
By taking advantage of the in-housedeveloped cold straightening techni-que, damaged blades can be straight-ened underwater, allowing the shipto return to commercial operationswithout the need to drydock.
If straightening is not an option, the
affected area of the blade will becropped. This is done to achieve thegreatest possible efficiency. Crop-ping is carried out using our propel-ler blade cutting equipment.
Our teams can also carry out anyother repair work on the propeller.Examples of this are the removal and reinstallation of entire propellerblades or replacement of the propel-ler seal ring.

Last month our diver/techni-cians carried out scrubber
overboard pipe repairs in Belgiumand the Netherlands. In Flushingthe corroded overboard pipe of a229-meter bulker was replaced. In Antwerp the same was done on a 200-meter roro vessel. In bothcases the new pipe was protectedwith Ecospeed, a chemical resist-ant coating produced by SubseaIndustries.
Exhaust scrubbers are systems thatfilter out all harmful toxins fromexhaust gasses of marine diesel en-gines. These can severely corrodethe pipes of the scrubber which canresult in water ingress if not handledquickly enough.

Permanent in-water rudder
repairs now possible without
drydocking
Hydrex has developed an en-tirely new method enabling
permanent repairs of rudders without drydocking the ship.Permanent repairs were hithertonot possible and ships had todrydock in case a major defectwas found. The newly designedequip ment is light-weight andcan be mobilized very rapidly in our special flight containers.Therefore this new service is nowavailable world-wide.
Major defects on rudders very of-ten cause unscheduled drydockingof ships. The new method designedby our technical department allowsengineers, welders and inspectorsto perform their tasks in dry con-ditions. Class approved permanentrepairs on-site, without moving theship, are now possible and com-mercial operations can continue.Steel repairs and replacements canbe performed and pintle and bush-ing defects can be solved withoutthe loss of time and money asso-ciated with drydocking.
The equipment can be mobilizedwithin hours to any port in theworld and is available for rapidmobilization from the Hydrexheadquarters in Antwerp.

sent by the customer. The teaminstalled this cofferdam over the outlet of the pipe. This allowed themto perform work inside the engineroom without water ingress.
Next the team cut away the old pipe.The shell plating was then preparedfor the installation of the replace-ment part. The new pipe had alsobeen constructed at our warehousein Antwerp with a diffuser and flange already in place. The pipewas then positioned and securedwith a full penetration weld. Nextand independent inspector carriedout NDT testing of the weldingwork.
To prevent the new pipe from corro-ding, the inside was coated withEcospeed. This product is produced

A small team traveled to the locationof the bulker to perform an inspec-tion of the damaged pipe on both the waterside and the onboard sideof the hull. This confirmed that the
scrubber outlet was corroded.Replacing the affected part of thepipe in its entirety was the onlyoption.

Antwerp. The portside overboardpipe of this vessel had been replacedeight months ago and had also beencoated with Ecospeed at that point.An inspection of the portside piperevealed that the pipe and theEcospeed coating were still in per-fect condition. No further action wasneeded for this pipe.

In-water bow thruster repairs
The Hydrex lightweight flexiblemobdocks are designed to be
easily transported around theworld and are used to close off thethruster tunnel on both sides,allowing divers to perform re-pairs and other operations in adry environment around the bowthruster unit.
This technique enables them to reinstall the propeller blades of anoverhauled thruster inside thethruster tunnel after the unit hasbeen secured or replace the bladesor seals and perform repair work ona specific part without removing theunit.
Since the development of this flexi-ble mobdock technique, numerous
thruster repairs have been carriedout by Hydrex diver/techniciansaround the world.
There is no need to send the vessel to drydock as all operationscan be carried out in port or whilethe vessel is stationary at sea.Normal commercial activities cantherefore continue without disrup-tion.
