ChallengeA municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the Western United States had to monitor how much wastewater was coming in to the plant and how much effluent was flowing out to the river after it had been cleaned and treated.
SolutionThe WWTP was using Siemens HydroRanger 200 ultrasonic level controllers as open channel flowmeters. They had previously been using an older model of the HydroRanger instrument, but they wanted to transmit the data using a wireless system

They had replaced the older models with the newer HydroRanger 200 because it included Modbus as a standard feature, and also gave them troubleshooting capabilities using SIMATIC® PDM software. The HydroRanger controller was mounted on a panel and connected to a XPS-15 transducer, which read the temperature and head level in a 6-foot Parshall flume. It used proven continuous ultrasonic echo ranging technology to monitor water and wastewater of any consistency up to 15 m (50 ft) in depth. Achievable resolution was 0.1% with accuracy to 0.25% of range.
