DESALINATION
Desalination refers to the process of removing salt and other minerals from water. The desalinated water is then used for human consumption or in industries. There are
mainly two types of desalination processes: thermal distillation and membrane-based
desalination.
Membrane-based desalination, such as reverse osmosis (RO) technology, uses semi-
permeable membranes and pressure to separate salts from water. Membrane-based
desalination is becoming the desalination technology of choice as it has proven to
reduce overall desalination costs.
Hyflux is acknowledged as a global leader in membrane-based desalination solutions.

SINGSPRING DESALINATION PLANT
The SingSpring Desalination Plant at Tuas isSingapore’s first seawater desalination plant, and
it meets some 10% of the nation’s current water
needs. The plant adopts RO technology with
semi-permeable membranes to produce some
136,380 m3/day of potable water, enough to fill
about 55 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The plant also holds the distinction of being
Singapore’s first public-private-partnership
initiative. The project financing deal was awarded
the Euromoney Asia Pacific Water Deal of the Year
in 2003, setting a new benchmark in terms of scopeas well as complexity of execution in the growing
market of privately financed water projects.
The SingSpring Desalination Plant also won
Distinction at the Global Water Awards 2006, with
the judges pronouncing the plant as “a brilliant work
of engineering which has challenged the global
perception that desalination is a high cost source
of water”.

Tuaspring Desalination Plant is Singapore’s second
desalination plant. With a designed capacity of
318,500 m3/day of desalinated water, it is the largest
desalination plant in South East Asia.
The plant utilises Hyux’s proprietary Kristal®
ultraltration (UF) membrane technology for the
pre-treatment process and a double pass reverse
osmosis (RO) process to produce water for domestic
and industrial use. This is one of the world’s largestUF installations in a desalination plant.
Yet another innovative solution to enhance the
operational efciency of the plant is the integration of
a 411 MW on-site combined cycle gas turbine power
plant with the desalination plant. The power plant will
supply electricity to the desalination plant.
This landmark desalination project is sited some
250 m away from SingSpring Desalination Plant.
It marks Hyux’s entry into the integrated water and
power project market.

The Tianjin Dagang Desalination Plant remains the
largest membrane-based seawater desalination
plant in China. The plant is an example of how
innovative solutions have been employed to
maximise operating and cost efficiencies and to
minimise the environmental impact.
The plant utilises our Kristal® ultrafiltration
membranes for the pre-treatment process and a
double pass reverse osmosis process to produce
high-grade water for use by Tianjin’s petrochemical
industries.
Site selection and plant design were criticalconsiderations to ensure the plant’s continuous
operation during the hard winter months of the
north. The plant is located next to an operating
power plant and draws its feedwater from the
cooling water discharge of the power plant. With
the intake water some 5°C warmer than ambient
temperature, lower osmotic pressure is required
during the treatment processes, resulting in lower
energy consumption and cost savings.
The modular design of the plant allows for easy
capacity expansion to meet any increase in demand
for water.
The Tianjin Dagang Desalination Plant supports
the industrial growth in Tianjin City and is a secure
and sustainable source of water to the region’spetrochemical hub.

MAGTAA DESALINATION PLANT

7/21/2019 hyflux brochure.pdf
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/hyflux-brochurepdf 19/32
Hyflux was awarded the project to develop a
seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination
plant in Magtaa, Algeria in April 2008 by the state-
owned Algeria Energy Company (AEC) which
handles the power and water privatisation exercise
in the North African country. Hyflux won the project
under intense competition from international
contenders.
Hyflux’s partners for the project are AEC and the
state-owned national water company L’Algérienne
Des Eaux (ADE). The off-takers are Sonatrach
and ADE.
The Magtaa Desalination Plant is distinctive in
a number of ways. With a designed capacity of
500,000 m3/day of desalinated water, it is one of the
largest SWRO desalination plants in the world.
It features the world’s largest installation of
ultrafiltration membranes for the pre-treatment
process. Hyflux’s Kristal® membranes are employed
for the pre-treatment stage.
The pipe laying is an engineering feat in its own
right. The plant is located some 400 m away from
the shoreline separated by a very challengingstretch of terrain that includes a lake, a railway
track and sand dunes. In order to lay the intake
and outfall pipes, a tunneling technique called pipe
jacking was employed to tunnel some 10 m below
sea level for the pipes to be laid and extended to
the sea. Three intake tunnels, each 1.2 km long and
an outfall tunnel of 1.0 km length were constructed
in this manner.

SOUK TLETA DESALINATION PLANT
The Souk Tleta Desalination Plant is a joint venture project with Malakoff Berhad of Malaysia
and the state-owned Algeria Energy Company. It marked Hyflux’s entry into the water
treatment market in the region.
Situated just 50 m from the coast, the desalination plant employs Hyflux’s ultrafiltration
membrane technology for the pre-treatment process, followed by a reverse osmosis treatment
process. The water produced is for Algeria’s state-owned national water company and the
national oil company.

WATER RECYCLING
WASTEWATER TREATMENT (MBR)
Water recycling is the process of
reclaiming used water or wastewater and
treating the reclaimed or recycled water
by removing solids and impurities for re-
use. Water recycling is a good alternative
to seawater desalination for water-
stressed areas that do not have access
to the sea.
Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology
combines the membrane process of
filtration and the solid-liquid separation
step into a single and cost-effective
process that reduces capital and
operating costs. It is a highly advanced
method and is widely used for municipal
and industrial wastewater treatment.

NEWater is a term coined by PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, for high-grade
reclaimed water that has been produced from treated used water that is further purified using
advanced membrane technologies and ultraviolet disinfection, making it ultra-clean and safe
to drink.
The Bedok NEWater Plant is Singapore’s first NEWater plant, and it marked Hyflux’s entry
into the municipal water treatment market. The project also featured the first large-scale use
of membranes in a municipal project in Singapore.
Hyflux supplied the process equipment for the plant, which uses ultrafiltration and reverse
osmosis processes and ultraviolet disinfection to treat the secondary effluent to produce
ultra-pure water.

JURONG MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR PLANT
The Jurong Membrane Bioreactor Plant is situated at Jurong Water Reclamation Plant, a
conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment facility. Using biological processes and
microfiltration membranes, wastewater from the industrialised Jurong catchment is treated foruse by industries on Jurong Island.
As a brownfield site, this project presented some challenges. The limited land area meant
that the plant layout had to be designed to minimise overall footprint while detailed planning
and site survey were required to ensure that the existing underground structures were
protected during the retrofit. In addition, the retrofitting work had to be carried out in an
operating plant with minimal disruptions to ongoing operations.
MBRs offer several advantages over conventional wastewater treatment such as small
footprint, easy retrofit and simple operations, in addition to high quality effluent that can be
re-used or safely discharged to coastal, surface or brackish waterways.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT (CONVENTIONAL)
Wastewater treatment is the treatment of used water released from residences,
businesses (such as restaurants and food courts) and industries. It is a multi-
stage treatment process to eliminate or reduce the pollutants and toxins in the
wastewater to an acceptable level before the water can be safely discharged into
the environment. Wastewater treatment may be followed by recycling for re-use.
