Originally, my mom thought I’d become a writer. As a child I composed short stories and made plays out of Popsicle puppets. You would think I’d be embarrassed telling you this, but I was also the funny hat girl all through grade school. I really don’t get embarrassed. Now, back to my mom. Growing up, she surrounded my brother and I with art. Her hobby, photography, became our hobby. In college, I became fascinated with psychology and sociology. I love studying people, how they live and communi-cate. This was my major for two years.

This is what brought me to Graphic Design. A combination of psychology, photography and the written word; communication through art. This is my passion. This is why I’m here. My portfolio is based on a play on words. A small suggestion. A teaser. A small window to what I love to do. So, if you want to know more, just keep turning the pages.

The Impulse Buy

Dessert. Candies. Sweets. The way chocolate melts. Pairing the rich milk chocolate with the salty bits of caramel. Dessert was never passed up in my house. Sometimes I’d eat it beforehand just to make sure there was going to be room for it. It’s too good to pass up. This is exactly why my team and I felt Kohl’s could capitalize on a line of products that catered to the impulse buy. We called it the Kohl’s Choice Sweets Brand.

The impulse buy is extremely strong market. Everyone has it. Our market research found that an overwhelming 58% of people make an impulse buy every time they shop. Think about it. Home Depot has snacks, Best Buy has snacks, Macy’s has a small POS of chocolates. So why doesn’t Kohl’s have a candy line? We thought they should. We made one. Sales went up.

The Knight

North Bay Shipping is here to help. Protection. Security. Strategy. They house, package and deliver products to clients. My job was to re-brand them. Their original logo consisted of a globe popping out of an open brown shipping box; basically clip art. No sense of identity. So, I created one. The idea came from my keyword brain-storm. Chess―it’s about strategy. A knight brings protection and security. The horse implies transport. All things that represents North Bay Shipping. They loved it.

As a child I played chess with my grandfather. I started when I was ten years old. He won every time. He destroyed me. No mercy for a ten year old. I remember his chess board being carved out of wood. I grew up playing cards. It taught me to think before I acted. I apply this to everything I do. I always look at all the possible outcomes before I begin my process.

Wednesday Night Market

WNM Board

Update existing brand

Web, Print & Apparel

Color is key

My hometown market happens in the summer months between May and August when the nights are warm. Garden. Fresh. Rich. Entertaining. Our community comes together to enjoy street performers, produce from local growers and hand crafted artistry. My job on this project was to update a brand that had been creat-ed just the year before. The parameters where to keep the icons and the typestyles. So what was the real problem?

I identified that the designer before me didn’t understand color. Sixty percent of our decision making is based on color, sixty percent! This is huge. Neglecting color is a terrible mistake. Another change I made was taking the center alignment to a more asymmetrical layout. I did this to create greater interest. Now, let’s get back to color. I found the feeling of the color in the previous branding to be lifeless. A word I did not want to associ-ate with an event so full of, well, life. So I came up with a twelve system color scheme of brighter hues. Problem solved.

The set above represents the original color scheme created for the brand. The colors are very neutral; not really showing off the nice modern look of the icons. The centered layout is very boiler plate. To the left is the new system. More color, more life. Offsetting the alignments creates more visual interest.

Safety. Affordable. Reliable. AAA represents all of these things. Growing up, my brother and I were shipped off every summer to stay with our grandparents. There was always a road trip planned. My grandfather was a Chief Master Sargent in the military so it was sink or swim on every expedition. My grandmother was the navigator. She was always in shotgun directing with a AAA map. Preparation was key in my family. As a teenager my dad always provided me a AAA membership. He made sure we were safe. I still use it today.

Reaching New Heights

Strength. Ability. I tried rock climbing for about a year. I loved it. Always thinking about my next move. Matching each hold. Testing my body. Trusting my partner. I’ve always had a slight fear of heights, but I pushed my fears. REI was started by a group of mountaineers, but has grown to show great responsibility. Their commitment to the community has been inspiring. The Corporate Social Responsibility Report outlines the foundations they support and programs they have created. I hope they continue to reach such great heights.

Urban. Awareness. Change. Advertising our morals and letting people know what we care about is important to us. We are proud of what we’ve built. We want to share and teach what we’ve learned with the next generation. Learning and respect-ing nature is so important for our future.

I wasn’t a tv kid. I wasn’t a video game kid. I preferred to play outside. We walked, ran, climbed, biked, hiked, camped, fished, kayaked, swam, snorkeled, learned and discovered. My life is built on a balance of work and play. Responsibility, respect and rules are a necessary part of that.

Cooking has always been a big part of my family. We eat. We drink. We laugh. That’s what we do. I grew up with some very strong women; a matriarch. My mom is the best cook I know.We are Philippinos, but she mostly cooks Italian. Pastas. Salads. Olive oil was needed. It was a constant in our home. Her salads are the best. How she would combine different ingredients to create amazing flavors taught me to experiment. I’m a better cook today because of her. I’m better at most things because of her.

I grew up on Hawaiian coffee. Now, I mostly drink tea. Relaxing. Rituals. Warmth. Rishi is a company focused on organic Fair Trade tea. They have strength in the quality of their product. This is becoming more and more important to consumers. Personally, the last thing I want to be thinking about when brewing my tea is pesticides. Visualizing the poison like street puddles gleaming with oil. Buying organic is some-thing I try to practice throughout my life. Yes, you pay for morals and quality. As I become more informed I can’t just think about my bottom line, that is not who I am. I must think about what I put in my body now for the future.

I grew up with the phrase, “you throw like a girl.” I didn’t like it. Nike’s commitment to women is amazing. Their ads are always both sexy and strong. This is exactly how I think. Organics

My family is from Hawaii. As a little girl I grew up eating rings of canned Pineapple and slices of Tangerines from Dole. Breakfast. English Muffin. Peanut Butter. Pineapple. Stacked. You should try it, seriously, it’s good. Being Hawaiian is about, “takin it easy.” Things are much slower there. Dole’s branding has taken this mantra too literally. As a global corporation they need a jump start. They need to keep their look fresh; up to date. People don’t want their produce to reflect the plastic containers they come in. Dole’s demographic needs a healthier approach. The harsh prime colors of the old Dole logo needed to go. Substituting the counter of the O with a sun is dated. The geometric typestyle doesn’t apply to the nature of the product. Fresh soft natural colors and organic humanist shapes are a better solution.

Adapting to different environments.

Change. Adapt. Evolve. Mercury is a font that took Hoefler & Frere-Jones 9 years to develop. It was ground breaking. Creating a font that could adapt to any media in any climate was evolutionary technology in type design. Adaptation means success. I try to apply this to my design style. I learn about my subject, company, and audience in order to create better design for that brand. Understand your environment, create unity, but also stand out above the rest.

THE UNITED NATIONS REPORTS THAT WORLD POPULATION

BILLION LEVEL WAS CROSSED.

Curbing population growth must be an urgent priority for all nations.

Indeed, there’s ample evidence to suggest that humanity is already

putting too much stress on the world’s environment. Rising tempera-

tures and the increasing frequency of severe weather suggest that we

may be altering the Earth’s climate. Add to that the depletion of ocean

fisheries, the steady lowering of water levels, desertification, and the

rapid rate of species extinction, and it’s obvious that we are flirting

with environmental disaster.

Super-Predators Past and Present

MEGALODON’S EXTINCTION CARRIES A CONSERVATION MESSAGE OF RELEVANCE TODAY. IT

HAS HELPED SCIENTISTS UNDERSTAND THE MACROEVOLUTION OF BODY SIZE IN SHARKS

AS WELL AS EXTINCTION OF TOP PREDATORS.

These concepts are applicable to the decline of many modern

shark species today. Sharks are in equilibrium with the popu-

lations of their prey and thus play a role in maintaining a stable

marine ecosystem. > In the oceans sharks are the most widely

distributed hunters weighing more than 50 kg. > They are called

top predators because they are at the peak of the food pyramid.

[INSERT ORNAMENT]

SOME SHARKS ARE SO-CALLED SUPER-PREDATORS WHICH MEANS THEY HAVE NO NATURAL

ENEMIES EXCEPT PARASITES AND PATHOGENS.

White sharks, tiger sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks, as well as ocean mammals such as killer

whales and sperm whales belong to the oceans' so-called super-predators. > Sharks play a key role

as top predators. > Directly or indirectly they regulate the natural balance of the populations of

this food pyramid. Because they usually hunt older, weaker or sick prey, they also help maintain

the health of the prey population. > Healthy and strong individuals thus have a better chance of

reproducing and passing on their genes.

Megalodon is a “lamnoid” shark related to modern makos, porbeagles, great whites, and many extinct species. Scien-tists debate if Megalodon is directly related to the great white shark or if it was an evolutionary “dead-end”.

˚1 Species survive by adapting to their environmentThe African elephant and the Asian elephant are the only two surviving species of what was in prehistoric times

a diverse and populous group of large mammals. Fossil records suggest that the elephant has some unlikely dis-

tant relatives, namely the small, rodentlike hyrax and the ungainly aquatic dugong. They all are thought to have

evolved from a common stock related to ungulates. In East Africa many well-preserved fossil remains of earlier

elephants have aided scientists in dating the archaeological sites of prehistoric man.

The African elephant is the largest living land mammal, one of the most impressive animals on earth. Of all its spe-

cialized features, the muscular trunk is the most remarkable it serves as a nose, a hand, an extra foot, a signaling

device and a tool for gathering food, siphoning water, dusting, digging and a variety of other functions. Not only

does the long trunk permit the elephant to reach as high as 23 feet, but it can also perform movements as delicate

as picking berries or caressing a companion. It is capable, too, of powerful twisting and coiling movements used

for tearing down trees or fighting. The trunk of the African elephant has two finger-like structures at its tip, as

opposed to just one on the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).

THE UNITED NATIONS REPORTS THAT WORLD POPULATION

HAS REACHED THE 7 BILLION MARK JUST 12 YEARS AFTER THE 6

BILLION LEVEL WAS CROSSED.

Curbing population growth must be an urgent priority for all nations.

Indeed, there’s ample evidence to suggest that humanity is already

putting too much stress on the world’s environment. Rising tempera-

tures and the increasing frequency of severe weather suggest that we

may be altering the Earth’s climate. Add to that the depletion of ocean

fisheries, the steady lowering of water levels, desertification, and the

rapid rate of species extinction, and it’s obvious that we are flirting

with environmental disaster.

If UN projections prove correct, world population will reach 8 billion in just 13

years and 9.3 billion by mid-century.

Live Hard, Die Young

Recently, a team of research-ers from Finland, Norway and the US has found that larger mammals seem to evolve more quickly than smaller ones – but the reason isn’t body size, per se. Rather, the scientists found that some smaller mammals have the ability to hibernate, burrow or hide in other shelters. In doing so, they effectively sleep through harsh envi-ronmental changes.

Larger mammals, on the other hand, must endure the hard times when there’s little food or ex-treme weather. Their large size constrains them from digging burrows or lower-ing their metabolic rates for extended time periods. In a sense, larger mammals face the elements head-on like a fearless adventurer who might not make it through alive, and is forever changed by the experience.

Cold Weather Creatures Learning from out past

AS THE DAYS SHORTEN AND THE WEATHER GETS COLDER, IT’S EASY FOR MOST OF US HUMANS TO ADAPT.

Simply break out the long underwear, dust off the winter coat and we’re pretty much ready to go, at least here in the Midwest. Now what

about those animals out in the wild? While we’re all familiar with bears hibernating through the winter, birds migrating to warmer settings

and other animals living off stored food that they’ve been saving up since the summer, how the heck do those animals who remain active

not only brave the elements but function in these conditions, especially in the coldest regions of the world? Understanding the answer to

this question requires an appreciation for the adaptability, resiliency and creativity of leatherback turtles, penguins, arctic foxes, gold-

en-crowned kinglets and many other animals.

About

The Prehistoric Giant Terror Bird was known as the largest predatory bird to have ever lived.

These Prehistoric Giant Flight-less Birds had a height of 7ft. and weighed in at about 330 lbs. These extinct birds, of North America, arrived here by way of South America.

Prehistoric Predatory Birds like these had powerful predatory feet and an enormous head and beak. They lived in open savanna scattered with oak trees. These gigantic prehis-toric flightless birds lived in the Pliocene Period, of Florida, and were estimated to have gone extinct about 2 to 1 Million Years ago.

Prehistoric Terror Birds ate small rodents, mammals, reptiles and carrion. It was estimated that it could run up to speeds of 40 mph (64km). Running its prey down and holding it with its huge feet and large claws, and using its axe-like beak to finish the job, was its mode of operation.

Their 3ft. wings were useless for flight, but may have been better adapted as arms. Its hands had a similar structure to certain dinosaurs, like Velociraptor.

Making their nest on the ground, they would have had gigantic eggs.
