In February I did a four-part sermon series on the vision statement (summarized as community, growth, and mission) and the core values (God centered, open, courageous, and loving). The conversations around it were good, and people seemed enthused. But since that time we’ve had Lent, Holy Week, and gone about our very busy lives. How much of that vision do we still have before us? The most important part of having a vision document is to keep it in front of us so that the message gets into the fabric of who we are as a church. To that end, I’m going to focus on those four areas in the Portfolio from May – August, considering how these words land in the life of the church. We are an open, loving and richly diverse community of faith drawn together by God’s grace and walking in the reconciling way of Jesus Christ. We stay connected in times of celebration and in times of grief. This first part of the vision statement considers the kind of community we are becoming. The emphasis is on genuine love for each other that develops openness to people from different backgrounds. I’ve heard people celebrate the diversity that we already have in our congrega- tion, and there certainly is. But ask yourself: Does our church look like the community you see on Third Street? Does it look like the community you see in the grocery store? Does it look like the community you see at a local park? While we do have some diversity, there is a lot more diversity in terms of age, race, culture, and economic profile in the surrounding community than we find on Sunday morning. So how does our church begin to change that? The most important thing is to change who we spend time with during the week. If we have diverse connections in our daily lives, that opens the door to connecting with the life of the church. That may or may not mean inviting them to a Sunday service – perhaps helping at Community Dinner or joining a small group or walking through the art in the Narthex Gallery are better places to start. Maybe they have a need that our church could assist with. I believe the pathway toward this vision of a diverse community starts with diversifying our relationships every day of the week. What do you think? I encourage you to talk with a family member or a friend from church about what would that mean for you. Pastor Matt Johnson

Upon Further Reflection

Returning to the Vision: Community At the beginning of this year the elders shared a new vision statement with the congregation.

I’ve heard people celebrate the diversity that we already have in our congrega-tion, and there certainly is. But ask yourself: Does our church look like the community you see on Third Street? PEB Educational Trip

Our congregation supports girls’ schools in Pakistan through PEB and they are offering an educational tour next November. Participants pay only for their airfare and visa, PEB covers in-country lodging, food and transportation. If you would like more information, see Bob or Jan Irish asap - the deadline to sign-up is May 31, 2019!

Organ Rental and Trial

Some of you may be aware that our organ is in need of extensive repairs. In order to be good stewards of funds raised in the “Living Our Legacy” campaign, Session (with Worship & Music and Building & Grounds) is exploring all our options. One option is the purchase of an electronic organ. Over the next three Sundays, May 26th, June 2nd, and June 9th, we will experience a rented electronic organ in Sunday worship.

We will endeavor to show you the full range of what this organ is capable of, both in the breadth of its sound and in its similarities to our current instrument. Session and the Ministry Teams will assess whether this is an appropri-ate way to address the issues with our organ. They would appreciate your input. If you have any questions or comments during this process, please direct them to Elders John Bush (Building & Grounds) or Lynn Foster (Worship & Music).

Nuts & Bolts

Communion Sunday June 2, 2019

Session Highlights

Action taken and information items are summa-rized for the Portfolio monthly. Session meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Here are highlights of the May 15th meeting:

1.) Discussed ways to keep the new vision and mission statements "in front" of the congregation and use them to align the work of ministry teams.

2.) Heard a report from Linda Mihnos on the status of the Christian Formation ministry team. The team is seeking direction as to where their focus and mission should be. Pastor Matt shared some observations on the original intent of the team and how it is currently functioning. Session agreed that the team should take a short hiatus over the summer and reconvene in the fall to discuss budget and evaluate the func-tion/direction of the team.

3.) Stewardship, Budget & Finance brought to Session a concern that we are not in compliance with the Book of Order requirement that two people be present when the cash offering is counted. SB& F team recommended that addi-tional people be approved as verifying money counters. MSP to approve the following people as verifying money counters for the offering: Bill Wittenberg, Treasurer John Bush, Elder Lynn Foster, Elder Linda Mihnos, Elder Sandra Sherwood, Elder Scott Smith, Elder Cathy Stephens, Elder

4.) MSP - to reschedule the June Session meeting from 6/19/19 to 6/26/19 to accommo-date Pastor Matt's vacation.

Sarah Circle Lunch Meeting - TBA

The Quilt Group meets the first Wednesday of the month at 9:30 am in the Witherspoon Room. Our next meeting is Wednesday, June 5th. Come join us!

Contact Sandra Lawrence or Nancy Barker if you have questions.

For the next two Sunday mornings, May 26th and June 2nd, Margaret Wallace will continue her class on “Christianity and the Happy Ending.” On June 9th, there will be a general discussion about the Adult Education program: What is going well and what not so well? What topics would you like to see dealt with next fall and winter? Then on June 16th, the summer program on Biblical characters will begin with Vaughan Palmore introducing us to Nehemiah, followed on June 23rd by Jane Kristof presenting Simon Peter. Think about the Biblical character you would like to research and discuss and sign up next week! Next Sunday, May 26th because of guests sleeping in Calvin Hall West, we will meet in Calvin Hall East, the center room, at 9:15 am Please join us!

Rummage Sale News

Yes, we are having a Rummage Sale in 2020 and will be starting to do the physical side of it in Sept. We will start the sorting process Sept. 16th at 10:00 am. Anyone interested in helping and wanting to learn about this process is welcome. After Sept. we will meet the first Monday of each month at 10:00 am and usually work about an hour or maybe a bit longer if necessary. Then in February we will sort every Monday. If there is a need during the summer for items to be given to rummage before Sept., please call me or the church office to arrange for pick-up or a time for you to deliver.

This will be our 83rd sale! Can you imagine! We did very well last year and intend to do the same this year. The money received through this sale goes to local missions right here in McMinnville. As I‘ve said before, for me, money is a secondary issue with this sale: the first being our service to the community. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve spoken to who have fun but also are able to get things they other-wise could not have. It is such a joy to see people happy! For those who are new to our church and have the time (and energy), join us in the basement in Sept. and learn what this is all about. It’s tiring work and tries the patience of a saint at times, BUT it is so much fun. And so rewarding. So, keep Sept. 16th open and we’ll see you in the basement.
