My opening words at our Sub District Luncheon at the MD 22
Convention on Thursday, May 10, 2012 were: “Wow! It is very hard to
believe that just about this same time last year I was trying hard, speaking as
loud as I could, to deliver my acceptance speech as your newly elected
District Governor-Elect. I know most of you (who made it last year) didn’t hear any of my talk that day but what I was trying to say was just please help
me as we begin this journey together for District 22D. Well this year’s
Convention is completed and it was such a much better experience this time,
especially the Sub District Convention where you could hear everything that
was said. It is time now to say “THANK YOU” to the great Lions of District
22D who have helped make this year such a success.
The District has officially planted over 400 trees, although one did not quite make it, the very first
one in Millsboro, but that was caused by some over-zealous town worker spraying the area. The good
news is that the tree is going to be replaced. Everyone in the District seems to know about the
District acronyms with the DLF giving out $26,000 in grants to clubs; the LVRF goal of $26,480
almost reached by the District and we are only $475 short as of May 25th; we had two very successful
EBDV events; we had two very successful LDB events; with the $1,500 in pledges from the Lions, SODE raised the most money ever at the Polar Bear Plunge; we even raised significant dollars for
LCI through the Melvin Jones Fellowships and the Measles Initiative which added an extra $500
from the Gates Foundation to each Melvin Jones donation of $1,000.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! First Lady, Lion Marie Chew, and I have just completed several noteworthy events at the end of
May and the beginning of June. On Monday, May 28, 2012 we marched in the very hot but thrilling National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC with the Lions of Multiple District 22 and
Virginia District 24. All five District Governors marched with our banners with over 50 other Lions
and what an experience. This past weekend we participated in the Opening Ceremonies for Special
Olympics at the University of Delaware and I got to march in with the Middletown Tornados; arm in
arm with two beautiful Special Olympians from that group. I also want to thank all those Lions who
manned the Opening Eyes tent on Friday including International Director Lion Ted Reiver and his
lovely wife Lion Ann Reiver.
In closing, there is one more important Lions event for the District this year and that is the Blue
and Gold Football game on Saturday, June 23, 2012. While as District 22D Lions, we sell a lot of
tickets and some volunteer at the game like Blue Gold Chair Lion Pat Weaver, I would like to see
more Lions come to the game and enjoy the moving show that is put on for the “special buddies”,
especially as they parade onto the field before the game. Remember, the District also offers a free tail gate party before the game starting around 3 PM in the parking lot in front of the stadium. Please
come enjoy the food, the Lions fellowship and the pride that comes from Lions support of the Blue
and Gold Football game.
It has been a wonderful honor to SERVE you this year as your District Governor and Lion Marie
and I are looking forward to continuing our warm Friendships with so many of the Lions of District
22D .
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Diabetes Corner:
Should I be concerned about a blood pressure of 128/86 mmHg?
The most recent American Diabetes Association guidelines suggest that diastolic blood pressure (the
bottom number) above 80 puts you at increased risk. Even mild elevations in blood pressure like yours
increase the risk of complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, and heart disease. You should
discuss these readings with your health care team.
If your blood pressure readings are consistently high, you may need to start on blood pressure
medication. Your doctor may ask you to check your blood pressure many times and in different settings
to determine whether your blood pressure is high all the time or goes up only at specific times. If you
haven't tried exercise and diet to decrease your blood pressure, it's time to start a walking program and
to decrease the sodium in your diet.
The recommended amount of sodium is 2,400 mg per day or less. Start by taking the salt shaker off
the table. Read labels on foods to identify and reduce the high-sodium foods in your diet. Canned goods
and processed foods are often high in sodium. Drinking alcohol can also raise your blood pressure.

District Governor Elect (DG-E) Message
My fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos:
While you are reading this message, I will be on my way to Busan (aka) Pusan, South Korea. I will be there for
approximately two weeks. The first week I will attend seminars learning how to become a good District Governor. The
second week is when the International Convention begins. I am really looking forward to this trip. I will get energized and
prepared to serve our great District.
As you all know we have a lot of work to do, and I feel good about the excellent Cabinet, King Lions, Zone Chairs,
Region Chairs, VDGs, PDGs, IDs, Lionesses and Leos who will work hard with me to keep us strong. Amen! I will have a
lot to write about upon my return.
Now, for more good news- FVDG Elect Mary Lee and I went to the Sheraton Hotel to negotiate the prices we would
like to pay for meals for the major events we will have at the Sheraton this upcoming year. We went over the events line by
line on our Events Schedule and indicated to the manager that with all the events we are holding at the Sheraton we should
have a cost reduction. The manager agreed with us. Our meals plus gratuity will average between $15.00 and $20.00. We
realized $30.00 meals were placing a burden on all of us where we had to make a choice as to which event to attend or
which to skip. Hopefully with the lower meal prices we will be able to attend all of the events.
Before closing out this message let us not forget the thousands of children dying from the measles infection in many of
the underdeveloped countries. “One shot, One Dollar” will help to eradicate this insidious disease and your Club’s
contribution will go towards a Melvin Jones Fellow. Please Help!
Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos the hard work we all do in improving our communities, our country and the world is
greatly appreciated. Also, I thank all of you for helping me to become your next District Governor.
Until I return, take care.
Yours in Lionism,
DG-E Lion Richard M. Merriwether
First Vice District Governor Elect (FVDG-E) Message
Happy Summer Fellow Lions!
This is my final for this year - as your Second Vice District Governor. What a ride DG Ken gave us on the Chew
Chew Express! Up and down the state and over the borders (to Maryland and Pennsylvania!) - not just for Lions meetings
either! The latest venture for me was a first time experience as a Lion. Special Olympics was held at the University of
Delaware this past weekend and on Friday (June 8) I traveled north with my friends from LB Club to meet up with other
friends so we could work with the eye testing as part of the Healthy Athletes. That was a reward in itself - but the icing on
the cake came from observing the Opening Ceremonies in the Fieldhouse. WOW - from bagpipers to runners carrying the
torch - it gave me a deeper appreciation for the law enforcement officers of this small state. Towns, County, College, and
State police officers ran over 160 miles from various points to bring the flame to the athletes. Then with one of the SO
athletes it was used to light the torch outside the complex. Inside there were Fans who showed their appreciation for the SO
athletes. I was proud to be a Lion on Friday - it was one more affirmation of why we do what we do as Lions in this state.
The year began a bit sad as my home club lost one of their own. As part of the bulletin for the service, the family had
the Lions Creed printed. I know this was in roster books through the nineties, but then disappeared and I do not know why.
The first two lines have long been one of my life's mottos. I would love to see us use it more again. See page 7 for the
Lions Creed.
Till next Month, Keep Serving - as Lions in this great state!

Special Olympics Opening Eyes
This annual event was held on Friday, June 8th at University of Delaware Athletic Complex in Newark, DE.
The program provides free screening for eyes, teeth, ears and feet of Special Olympians in need of the service.
Lion Delores Springer of Milton Lions Club, reported that it was a wonderful event and they are so glad that they
attended. The opening ceremonies of the games on Friday evening were fun and heart warming. With this glowing
report, maybe more recruits can be enlisted for next year’s event. The photo below shows Lion volunteers. The
picture on right shows the Olympians being guided and entertained.
