THE PROCESS

Digitizing or digitization is the process of converting images and or sound into a digital form that can be processed by a computer.

In other words… Taking footage from the camcorder and getting it into the computer.

EQUIPMENT

•Computer•Camcorder•Microphone•Tripod

Suggestions•Use a laptop for mobility.•Have an external microphone handy.•Select a camcorder with Firewire, a.k.a I.LINK to make digitizing or capturing your footage a snap.•Be aware of the format* (saved video) and software (proprietary) restrictions to avoid a headache and hassle.•Double Up - Two camcorders are better than one.•Use a tripod. It is a wonderful apparatus.

• Outline potential questions ahead of time (note cards)

• Allow for “editing time” (compliments and follow up questions should wait until a few seconds after the speaker ends her/his statement) • Note: If you interrupt the speaker, the audio will be affected as will the facial reactions of your subject.

People are naturally nervous in front of the camera. Allow your subjects to be themselves. Give them time for the nervousness to wear off. Do not interrupt the speakers flow.Be conscious of your feedback – although the camera cannot see you – it will show up on the faces of those you interview. It is important to give smiles and positive feedback, both verbal and nonverbal.

•Set up an alternative camera.•Have extra batteries and/or be sure they are fully charged.• Make sure your audio is recording properly.• Bring extra tapes or discs depending on your camera.•Film several subjects with variations of the same questions in different settings for diverse footage.•Repeat questions at the end of an interview if necessary.

EDITING YOUR FOOTAGE• Use the audio track to guide your editing

• Save you project file in the same folder as your captured clips “target file” on your computer

• Find the keyboard short cuts for: • Play• Stop• Save Project• Advance frame or go back frame

• Zoom• Learn how to zoom in and out in the views

• Find a zoom level that is comfortable to make the editing cuts
