Welcome to Honors Chemistry! I look forward to working with all of you this year. Chemistry is an interesting field with lots of “weird” things that help explain the way the world works at a level that can’t be see with the naked eye. We’ve got lots to do, but I guarantee it’ll be fun!

So let’s get started with what to expect in this course….

I. Curriculum:Online Textbook: This course will use an online textbook, World of Chemistry by Zumdahl, Zumdahl and Decoste. Hard copies and CDs are available for sign out, but there is a limited number to sign out for students.

Major Course Concepts: These are the majors concepts will be discussing with the corresponding chapter in the course textbook. As you’ll see chapters will overlap in some concepts.

Supplies: The following supplies are recommended for this course:- 3-ring binder- looseleaf paper- a set of dividers- a scientific calculator (also provided in class)- blue or black pen and pencils/erasers

Laboratory: You will be required to perform experiments and make conclusions based on what you observed in those experiments. These experiments are meant to apply what you learn in lecture. Some labs require you to work in partners or groups.

Notice and instructions for each lab will given out at least 2 days in advance. *Note: Keep a pair of closed-toed shoes in your locker if you’re prone to forgetting!**See the Lab Manual and Safety Contract for safety practices and rules.

Quizzes/Tests: Several quizzes and/or tests will be given throughout the marking period demonstrating your understanding of the material. Many (if not most) of the questions will ask you to apply what you learned, not regurgitate information. It’s more important to understand the principals of the concepts, not just memorize the facts.

Total points of tests/quizzes is variable; it is based on the format of the test/quiz and the number of questions.

Homework/Classwork: Homework will be given to help facilitate your understanding of the material. It will be from the World of Chemistry textbook or handouts and can be collected for a grade. The assignment will be posted on the board and online under the “Homework” tab of Ms. Cipolla’s website.

Participation in class is part of your classwork grade. This includes contributing in group work, participating in class discussion, and actively participating in lab.

II. Procedures

Late work: TURN YOUR WORK IN ON TIME. IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE MUCH EASIER. Failure to do so can eventually lead to a meeting with Mr. Synder and an Academic Detention after school.

Absent/Makeup Work Policy: If you are absent from school with an excuse for so many days (sick, funeral, family emergency, etc.), you will have those same number of days to complete and turn in any missing assignments (homework, classwork, tests/quizzes). If you miss a lab, reschedule to make it up with Ms. Cipolla ASAP.

You can pick up any missing assignments in the labeled box near Ms. Cipolla’s desk.

If you attend a field trip you are considered to be in class and it is your responsibility to pick up and complete any work you will miss. There is no excuse to be missing work when you know you’ll be out ahead of time. Please schedule to makeup a scheduled test/quiz with Ms. Cipolla before (if possible) the trip.

Classroom Rules: This is an environment for learning where everyone is expected to respect each other’s personal space, views, and belongings. Cell phones, food, and drinks are not permitted in class because they are distractions to those around you and me. School policy for these and lateness, missing/incomplete assignments, dress code, foul language, etc. will also be enforced.

III. Grading

Grading Percentages:Your marking period grade is calculated from the three categories below:Tests: 50% Quizzes/Lab: 30% Homework/Classwork: + 20%

100%

*Your Science Fair project is a major test grade, so do nothing less than your best!Final averages for the year will be calculated per the district policy listed in the student handbook:1st Marking Period: 20%2nd Marking Period: 20%Midterm Exam: 10%3rd Marking Period: 20%4th Marking Period: 20%Final Exam: 10%Total: 100%
