Introducing the Business Overview Series
The first of this year’s newly introduced Business Overview Series got off to a good start with the Autumn Business Overview, held in Parliament’s Banquet Hall on Wednesday 12 June, and attended by MPs, Trustees and Corporate guests.
The guest speaker was Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson, whose topic: “How do we get people into affordable housing?” was very relevant to the current problems facing a large proportion of the population. It was very well received even though attendance numbers were somewhat disappointing due to a number of competing events being held within the Parliamentary complex on the same evening.
A copy of Peter’s speech is included in this Issue as a supplement and also appears on our website: nzbpt.org.nz
Details of the next Business Overview event are shown below.

ISSUE 2 SEPTEMBER 2013
The Trust continues to monitor its programmes with a view to meeting the changing needs of members. With this in mind, the Trust Board is pleased to announce the following new initiatives:
ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP FOR RETIRING MPS: In the past, any MP who had achieved Associate Membership of the Trust by undertaking an Attachment with a Corporate Member ceased to retain that Membership once he or she left Parliament. This will no longer be the case and MPs will be free to retain their Membership for as long as they wish.
CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP JOINT VENTURES: Those Corporate Members who have links to other companies and/or subsidiaries are welcome to nominate representatives from those subsidiaries or associate organisations to attend Parliamentary Seminars or other Trust events.
UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY - NEW SCHOLARSHIP: A new scholarship of $5,000 will be available to post-graduate students of the University of Canterbury from the beginning of 2014. The scholarship recipient is expected to contribute a research essay on the role of Parliament in governance, the policy process and the wider community.

July Parliamentary Seminar
Above: Clerk of the House, Mary Harris, speaking on ‘The Business of the House’.
During the lunch break the Chairman of the
Trust, Sir John Goulter, took the opportunity to
present Richard Keys of the Abano
Healthcare Group with his company’s
Certificate of Corporate Membership (left);
And MP Andrew Little, who had just under-
taken a Business Study Attachment with Sanofi
New Zealand, received his Certificate of
Associate Membership.
Seminar participants at the July Seminar experienced an unusual day as Parliament went into urgency. The Select Committees scheduled for the day were cancelled and the usual tour of the floor of the Debating Chamber could not take place. Instead participants were taken to the Galleria
where the group photograph was taken (see left).
Despite the challenges of the day, the participants spoke glowingly of the programme and the senior Parliamentarians who addressed them. The interaction with MPs at lunchtime was, as always, very well received, as was viewing Question Time.
Rt Hon David Carter, Speaker of
the House, addresses
participants at the start of the day.

SURVEY OF MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT: As part of the Board’s wish to continue to meet the needs of its Members, the Secretariat conducted a Survey of all Members of Parliament earlier this year.
The results were most encouraging with the majority of Members who completed the survey expressing satisfaction with the Trust’s programmes and level of involvement in the Corporate sector.
Suggestions were also received on possible future speakers at the Business Overview Series as well as names of companies who could be approached to join the Trust as members.
Four President’s Dinners are scheduled to be held this year. Three have now taken place, with the first Dinner in March being featured in the May Issue of the Bulletin and those in May and August are shown below.
These dinners are held specifically for CEOs of our Corporate membership to thank the members for their support and to acquaint them personally with Trust activities and future developments.

2013 Youth Parliament Competition During each Parliamentary term, the Trust has offered a competition to all Youth Members of Parliament and Members of the Youth Press Gallery. In earlier years it was solely as an essay but in 2010 the competition was broadened to a video format that was posted on YouTube.
This year’s Competition was open in four different media forms: an essay (which included graphics), a speech which was videoed, a PowerPoint presentation and, lastly, a video. No limitations were set for the length of any of the presentations.
The topic chosen was “Why does Youth Parliament matter?” with the audience the Ministry of Youth Development responsible for making the decision whether to hold a Youth Parliament in 2016.
The prizes will be $2,000 for the winner and $1,500 each for two runners-up, the money going towards future educational study.
Responses have been very encouraging with a total of 30 entries in all four media forms, the majority being essays.
Entries are currently being assessed by a panel of judges and the winners will be announced in mid-October on the Trust’s website.
A formal presentation will be made to the winners by the Speaker in Parliament in mid-November.
One-day Business Seminar for MPs A group of MPs will be visiting Progressive Enterprises at their Auckland head office in Favona this month, which promises to be a most interesting and informative day.
Each year the Trust organises such one-day visits, designed to give MPs a quick introduction to an organisation and as part of the Trust’s Business Study Programme.
The MPs will be accompanied by the Trust's Chairman Sir John Goulter and Trust Chief Executive Michael Fokker.
The report of the visit will be included in the next Bulletin.

A large number of applications have been received from Members of Parliament this year to undertake Business Study Attachments with one of the Trust’s Corporate members. For some MPs it has been a second or third Attachment, and for some of the Corporate members a new experience for those who have not hosted a Member of Parliament before.
MPs who have completed their Attachments this year are:
Ian McKelvie (below) during his attachment to KiwiRail is pictured here with Locomotive Engineer Charlie Pou, about to depart for Auckland. In the back-ground are 10 brand new DL locomotives that had just arrived. Ian wrote “This
was a fascinating insight into the company. The strength of the organisation impressed me. Everyone had a real purpose and was fully committed to what they did. It is an expensive business to run but most certainly has a future in our export led economy.”
Right - Julie Anne Genter who also undertook an attachment with KiwiRail, wrote “I learned even more than I expected, about all elements of the business, in a very short time frame. It was an enormous privilege to get such a broad and in-depth view of the various elements of the business, and I am excited about the future of KiwiRail.”
Below - Andrew Little visiting Sanofi New Zealand with Alan Carter, Country manager and David Pullar, Genzyme Govt Relations manager. Pictured left,
they are seen discussing rare diseases and genzymes role in their treatment.
Louisa Wall recently undertook an attachment with the Hawkins Group and is seen here with Nancy McConnell Manager Communications Brand and
Community Hawkins Group (left) and Gary Walker Auckland Region Manager.
Right above - Holly Walker at her recent attachment
with Kiwibank spoke highly of her experience learning about banking and
of Kiwibank’s unique role and position in the NZ community in particular.
