IT is not every week that a player of Dickie Hawdon's class and cultivated taste returns to the ranks of the primitives.
On Monday, he made his bow with Terry Lightfoot's band, and I went to the Welwyn Garden Jazz Club to witness the event.

And they're losing sight of thejazz produced by the bands.
Critics are not constructiveenough. Right now, with jam popu-larity rising, they ought to getbehind our jazzmen and not narrowthe music own so finely.
The soundA chap doesn't have to examine
every single instrument individuallyto appreciate a tune. It's the over-all sound that should be judged.
There are same really excellentbudding jazzmen around in Britain.Up and down the country I hearsemi -pro groups with some poten-tially great jazzmen.
All they need is the right type ofencouragement and patience. Tocritics, I say: Don't line up ouryoung jazzmen and compare themwith Americans.

The only people who brought thismusic eat into peak popularity arethe fads. They all deserve a big" thank you" for standing by jazzwhen it was not the drawing powerit is today.The fans put the TemperanceSeven at the top of the Hit Parade.To me, this is proof that jazz hadmade it. The barrier has beencrashed. Marvellous!
