" GUIDE TO USE OF THIS MANUAL
"
1. Purpose ~
This manual provides methods and procedures, based upon actual field experience, for installationof radio and interphone equipment in Light TankM5 series. Items required to make a complete op-erating installation are listed for each radio set andinterphone equipment. Offcial nomenclature fol-lmn:d by empty parentheses, such as HeadsetHS-3O-( ), is used to indicate any model ofequipment regardless of its procurement.
2. Equipment
Installations coyered include the following radiosets:
SCR-245-liSCR-508-( )AN /VRC-3-( )
SCR-506-( ),SCR-528-( )
3. Holes and Brackets
The preliminary preparation of Light Tank M5for installation of radio and interphone equipmentconsists of the necessary drillng of the vehicle, thelocation and spacing of certain holes and bolts, andthe mounting of the terminal box complete withbattery and interphone connections. Normally,
these preparations wil have ben completed be-fore deliyery of the vehicle. Should any vehicle
arriye undrilled, reference must be made to the
appropriate figure for complete drillng data. In
the event relocation of holes appears to be neces-
sary, consult these figures before driling. Do not
change kole line-up on any radio part imless abso-
lutely necessary. Specific instructions for any par-
ticular part of these installations are included in
the section devoted to that installation. Figures 3and 12 show the mounting holes used for the vari-ous radio sets installed in Light Tank M5.
4. Before Beginning Installation .
Ilustrations, installation methods, and any sub-sequent changes to this manual must be studiedcarefully before an installation is made.
Caution: Light Tank M5 series has a 12-voltelectrical system. Before installng any radio set orinterphone equipment covered in this manual, besure that it is designed for a 12-volt installation, and that 12-volt dynamotors have been supplied.
S. Immediately After Installation
At the completion of the installation, a thoroughoperating check must be made to determine \V hetherthe equipment has been installed properly andwhether it is in working order.
CautiOti: Do not operate any of the radio orinterphone equipment until the instruction bookor technical manual, covering the specific radio setor interphone equipment, has been studied care-ful\y. Otherwise, damage to the equipment mayresult.

IGNITION NOISE SUPPRESSION IN LIGHT TANK MS SERIES
6. General
An electncal noise suppression system has beeninstalled in Light Tank MS senes by the manu-facturer. The type of suppression installed in thissenes is usually called the filter suppre5r, bypascapacitor, and shielding system. For a detaileddescnption of this suppression system. se thetechnical manual.furnished by the manufacturerfor each vehicle. Normally, little trouble is expen-enced with this system. However, should a case
anse where excessive ignition or other electncalnoise is encountered, locate the source of the noiseand take steps toward eliminating it. Use thefollowing procedure.
7. Procedure
a. Complete the radio installation and studythe detailed operating instructions contained in
the technica manual of the radio set. Place theradio set in operation, set the receiver sensitivitycontrol at maxmum, and tune the receiver slowlyover the entire range of frequencies to be utilizedfor communication. Listen to the reeiver output
with a headset.
b. When the frequency or frequencies of great-est noise level have been found, leave the receivertuned to one of these frequencies and shut off thevehicle engine. Observe to what degree the noisehas subsided. That part of the noise which subsideswhen the vehicle engine is shut off, is caused bythe engine's ignition system. That part of the noisewhich stil persists is picked up from sources otherthan the vehicle's ignition system.
c. Start the vehicle engine again. Adjust receiver sensitivity control to a point where the en-gine noise can be most readily distinguished fromthe static, etc. Proceed to identify the engine
noise by reference to the following table:
Interene Usua Source
Popping sound; corresponds Ignition system.to ignition finng; acceler-
ates when engine is raced;stops when engine isturned off.
2
Intermittent,' clicking Generator regulator.
sound; lingers for severalseconds when ignition isturned off.
Whining sound; vanes with Generator.speed of engine; ceases
only when generator stopsrotating. .
Sparking, or con tin uous Brushes and commu-
crackling noise. tator of generator.
d., Noises from other electncal components andcircuits of the vehicle, such as panel gauges, heaterfans; and, in turreted vehicles, traversing motorsand gyrostabilzers, wil generally fall into one ormore of the above categones. To identify noisesemanating from them, these auxilanes may beturned on and off individually.
e. If the source of interference cannot be foundby any of the preceding methods, connect a probeantenna (fig. 31) to the antenna terminal of theradio set. Slowly move the loop of the probe an-tenna over the vanous parts of the vehicle's elec-tncal system. Keep the loop close to, but not in ,contact with, the part being examined. Interfer-
ence-producing parts should be heard in the
reeiver.
f. Intèrference generally can be eliminated bycleaning, tightening, or rep'lacing noise-producing
parts. Examine and tighten all suppressr andshielding components, and all connections andgrounding bonds. Clean the surfaces under them. This wil assure goo electncal con tact between
wires and terminals, and between metal casings
and the frame of the vehicles. (Insulated but un-grounded metal parts absorb and reradiate elec-tnca noise.) .,
g. If interference persists, supprer compon-ents should be checked by substituting new ones.
If a replacemtnt is not available, disconnect the
suspected component, and test capacitors, resis-tors, and chokes within it for opens, shorts, or otherfaults.
