DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra misión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justicia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, con-tinuaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienes-tar de los más necesitados en general. Es así como nos esforzamos para hacer de nuestra comunidad parroquial una familia que comparte y se preocupa por sus miembros.

OLQP MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedi-cated to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identi-fy with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial har-mony and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the down-trodden everywhere. In this we strive for our par-ish community to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

tion to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

disposable face mask. Please bring your own. Parishes may

have a l imited supply designated for those in true need, not

for general distr ibution.

Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect your hands when

entering the church and encouraged to do so again

immediately before receiving Communion. Please bring your

own hand sanitizer, which should contain at least 60% alcohol.

PÈRE FRANTZ DISCUSSES

MEDOR’S AGRO-FORESTRY PROGRAM I can see that the agro-forestry program aids the envi-

ronment while helping us fight poverty, food insecurity

and contribute to gender equity. The combination of

tree nurseries, tree planting on the mountainsides, seed

banks, distribution of agricultural tools and agricultural

training are having a positive impact on Médor.

The tree nurseries allow farmers to plant trees, restoring

ground cover, fighting against erosion and landslides

and improving the water table. The tree nurseries allow

children, young people, and adults to receive an environ-

mental education. They also provide the community with

team spirit, solidarity and a sense of purpose.

The seed banks allow the inhabitants to find good seeds

that result in an increase in crop yields. The seed banks

also contribute to a reduction of family expenses while

increasing each family’s economy.

The distribution of tools allows farmers to find working

materials on the spot and also reduces family expenses.

Agricultural training allows farmers to receive up to date

technical supervision training. Many planters in our area

use archaic farming methods. The training they receive

through the program allows them to use modern meth-

ods that contribute to efficiency and to an increase of

agricultural production.

In short, I think the agro-forestry program is assisting

our community in a path toward environmental and

economic development.

“ED TALKS” COMING TO ZOOM -- The Ed Kelly fall speaker series named after Fr. Ed Kelly, CSSp (OLQP Associate Pastor 1990-1995) is coming back -- on zoom! We will have speakers once a month in September, Oc-tober and November. The theme this year is “Voting” with the following discussion topics: rights/responsibility, suppression and maybe the theology of voting. Dates and times to be announced soon.

OLQP ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE -- Thank

you for all your donations – we are almost there! We still need 550 child elementary school size masks, 100 small bottles of hand sanitizer, and 100 elementary school sized scissors. Please place the donations in the food pantry bins behind Father Ray Hall. This year School Supply Pickup will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis on Thursday, September 3rd from 11:30am to 1:30pm and Sunday, September 6th from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Supplies are limited and half will be distributed each day. Distribution will take place outside in front of Father Ray Hall.

PÈRE FRANTZ HABLA DEL PROGRAMA AGROFORESTAL DE MEDOR

Yo veo que el programa agroforestal ayuda al medio ambiente a la vez que nos ayuda a luchar contra la pobreza, la inseguridad alimentaria y contribuye a la equidad de género. La combina-ción de los viveros de árboles, la siembra de árboles en las lade-ras de las montañas, los bancos de semillas, la distribución de herramientas agrícolas y la educación en agricultura tienen un impacto positivo en Medor. Los viveros de árboles permiten que los agricultores siembren árboles, lo cual restaura la capa vegetal, ayuda a combatir la erosión y los desprendimientos de tierra y mejora las aguas sub-terráneas. Los viveros de los árboles permiten que los niños, los jóvenes y los adultos reciban una educación sobre el ambiente. También le dan un espíritu de equipo, solidaridad y un sentido de propósito a la comunidad. El banco de semillas permite que los habitantes encuentren bue-nas semillas que resultan en un mayor rendimiento del cultivo. Los bancos de semillas también contribuyen a reducir los gastos de cada familia mientras que aumentan sus ingresos. La distribución de herramientas permite que los agricultores tengan las herramientas de inmediato y también reduce los gas-tos de la familia. La educación en agricultura permite que los agricultores reciban entrenamiento técnico actualizado. Muchos agricultores en nuestra área usan métodos agrícolas que son antiquísimos. El entrenamiento que reciben a través del programa permite que usen métodos modernos que contribuyen a la eficacia y a un aumento de la producción agrícola. En resumen, yo pienso que el programa agroforestal está ayu-dando a nuestra comunidad en el camino hacia el desarrollo ambiental y económico.

“LAS CHARLAS ED” VIENEN A ZOOM – ¡La serie de char-

las Ed Kelly del otoño, lleva el nombre del Padre Ed Kelly, CSSp

(párroco asociado de OLQP del 1990-1995) regresa otra vez – en

zoom! Tendremos oradores una vez al mes en septiembre, octu-

bre y noviembre. El tema este año es “Voting” (el voto) con los

temas que siguen para la discusión: derechos/

responsabilidades, represión y quizás la teología del voto. Las

fechas y las horas se anunciarán pronto.

COLECTA DE MATERIALES ESCOLARES DE OLQP -- ¡Gracias por todas sus donaciones – casi tenemos lo necesario! Todavía necesitamos 500 mascarillas para niños de escuela ele-mental, 100 botellas pequeñas de desinfectante para manos y 100 tijeras para niños de escuela elemental. Por favor ponga sus donaciones en los contenedores para alimentos detrás de Fat-her Ray Hall. MATT 25 – NO MÁS DONACIONES POR AHORA – Co-

mo siempre, su generosidad no tiene límites. Literalmente esta-mos abrumados con nuevas donaciones y no podemos aceptar más. Los contenedores se van a cerrar este fin de semana y es-peramos tener una idea del número de artículos donados en tan poco tiempo. Solamente abriremos los contenedores otra vez para recoger ropa de invierno el sábado, 19 de septiembre. De esa fecha en adelante continuaremos recogiendo ropa de in-vierno los sábados. ¡Gracias por su continuo apoyo de este mi-nisterio!

¡REUTILICE ESAS BOLSAS DEL MERCADO! – Verdadera-

mente necesitamos bolsas de papel con asas o mangos. Las bolsas ayudan a los voluntarios a empaquetar los alimentos y le dan una segunda vida a las bolsas ante de ser recicladas. REUSE THOSE GROCERY BAGS! -- We are in real

need of brown paper bags with handles. These help volun-teers package our foods and give the bags a second life be-fore recycling. Thank you for working to reduce waste. Please drop them off during office hours from 10 am until 2 pm in the food collection bins behind Father Ray Hall.

RESPONDING TO RACISM: UNDERSTANDING,

CONVERSION, ACTION will be presented by Catholic

Charities of the Diocese of Arlington with Bishop Michael F.

Burbidge and Rev. Scott Woods, a priest of the Archdiocese

of Washington, at The Church of the Nativity, Burke, on

Tuesday, August 25 at 7pm. The event, co-sponsored by

the diocesan Peace and Justice Commission and the Office

of Multicultural Ministries, is open with limited seating for

100 people who register to attend in person. Safe distanc-

ing will be practiced and masks or face coverings are re-

quired. Hand sanitizer will be available upon arrival and

departure. RSVP by Friday, August 21 strongly encouraged:

JUST A THOUGHT, OR TWO….In today’s Gospel

Jesus asks the disciples “who do you say that I am?”…Peter proclaims that he is “the Christ”…the Messi-ah! And from this declaration, Jesus proclaims that “Simon” is blessed and that he has come to this insight, not by human knowledge, but Divine inspiration. In the Gospel of Matthew this is another pivotal mo-ment. Jesus acknowledges that he is more than a prophet, more than a messenger…He is the “Son of God”! From this moment forward Jesus’ public minis-try takes on cosmic proportions…from now on his mis-sion is to the whole world, not just the People of Israel. But what does this mean for me? Who do people say I am?….when I am not there to hear? Who do “I” say I am?….by my life…by my words and by my actions? The American educator, Parker Palmer, once pro-claimed….”let my life speak”, but speak of what? Can people tell that I am a disciple of Jesus Christ by how I life my life? Is the message of God’s deep and passion-ate love for all people of every race and Jesus’ clarion call to love and care for others, evidenced in the way I

live my life? As a Christian -- a disciple of Jesus Christ -- I am called to love God with my whole being and to love and care for my neighbor as if they were my-self! And yet down through history to this very mo-ment in time Christians have perpetrated sins of rac-ism, bigotry, antisemitism and misogyny and outright hatred of their neighbor whom Jesus has commanded they love. And yet we call ourselves followers of Je-sus. We cannot hate our neighbor, act with racist and bigoted hearts and believe that we are living as Christ has called us to live. We must ask ourselves: do I har-bor hatred, distrust or ill will towards my neigh-bor? We must name and call out the sins of racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, homophobia and misogyny when and where we see them! It is in this way that “our lives will speak” to the world the truth of who Jesus Christ is. That is how our lives will be prophetic! Wedding Anniversary The Mass for those celebrating 25 and 50 years of marriage (married in 1970 and 1995) will be held at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington on Sunday, October 4, at 2:30pm. Bishop Michael Burbidge will be the principal cele-brant and homilist. A light reception of cake and punch with an opportunity for a photograph with Bishop Burbidge will follow in Burke Hall. 75TH ANNIVERSARY PARISH DIRECTORY UPDATE

We continue working with LifeTouch to publish the parish di-rectory. Even though LifeTouch has closed their publication operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been able to finalize the parish directory and put it into the queue for printing. While there is currently no estimate from LifeTouch regarding when their operations will reopen, once they do, the directory will be printed and delivered. POSTCARD PARTY To Fight Voter Suppression in the

2020 ELECTION!

John Lewis observed that the vote “is the most powerful non-violent tool we have.” And yet we see wide-spread voter suppression efforts targeted at Black communities such as strict voter ID laws and strategic closing of polling places leading to incredibly long lines. That is wrong. That undermines their sacred votes and democracy. So we must follow John Lewis’ example to protect the vote because, as he said, “[w]hen you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say some-thing. To do something. Our children and their children will ask us, ‘What did you do? What did you say?’” The good news is that we can act together as a parish to stand up against voter suppression in the upcoming election. The Labor Team has been working with the Arlington NAACP and its partner in these elections, Reclaim Our Vote, and will have 1,000 postcards to distribute among OLQP households who wish to join our “postcard party.” Here are the details:

• Each household (not person) will be able to get a total of 25 postcards. That number may be reduced if we get overwhelming demand at the parish and need to share the postcards more broadly

• You must request the postcards by emailing Sally Diaz Wells at sdiazwells@olqpva.org before Monday, August

24th, noting your household last name(s). No need to specify a postcard total – every package will have up to 25.

• The postcards will be through Reclaim Our Vote, a 501(c)(3) organization that partners with the NAACP and other groups to reach voters in states with a long history of voter suppression. Our postcards will be targeted to unregis-tered South Carolina residents, urging them to vote.

• Your package will be left for pick-up at the parish office -- look for the “postcard party” box -- on the porch to the parish office from 10am-3pm on Thursday August 27th – Sunday August 30th. It will contain blank postcards, names and addresses of where to send each postcard, a reminder of the deadline for completing them, and a script you must follow when addressing the postcard. However, feel free to add your own creative flair - maybe a little color and artwork. If you have children, feel free to involve them too!

• Because of tight deadlines for registering to vote and delays with USPS, you must either mail the postcard (with postage) yourself by September 6th or return your completed postcards from 10am-6pm the weekend of Septem-ber 5th and 6th to the box in the back of the OLQP parking lot, by the statue of Mary (or to the box inside the minis-try center if after 5pm on those days or it is raining). OLQP will provide stamps for any postcards returned to the parish for mailing.

• If you choose to return the completed postcards to the box at OLQP on the weekend of September 5 and 6 in lieu of mailing them from your home, we ask you to wear a mask, observe social distancing, and before you leave, to con-sider taking a moment to sit on the bench beside the statue of Mary to join your personal prayer with the parish’s to pray for: the people we are contacting by mail, an end to voter suppression, widespread voter participation, a peace-ful, safe, free, and fair election, and an election outcome that uplifts the people in our country during this hard time, especially the least among us.

Pope Francis: Making the poor a priority

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Church teach-

ing on giving priority to the well-being

of the poor and marginalized is not a

political or ideological choice; it lies at

the very heart of the Gospel, Pope

Francis said.

The preferential option for the poor,

which includes feeding the hungry and

drawing close to the excluded, “is the

key criterion of Christian authentici-

ty,” he said Aug. 19 during his weekly

general audience.

The principle also would include mak-

ing sure that any vaccine developed

for the novel coronavirus helps every-

one, he added.

“It would be sad,” he said, if priority

for a vaccine “were to be given to the

richest. It would be sad if this vaccine

were to become the property of this

nation or another, rather than univer-

sal and for all.”

During his audience, livestreamed

from the library of the Apostolic Pal-

ace, Pope Francis continued a series

of talks on the principles of the

church’s social doctrine as a guide for

healing and building a better future,

particularly as the world is struggling

with a pandemic and its negative

effects.

In fact, he said, a proper response to

the pandemic is two-fold:

“On the one hand, it is essential to

find a cure for this small but terrible

virus, which has brought the whole

world to its knees. On the other, we

must also cure a larger virus, that of

social injustice, inequality of oppor-

tunity, marginalization and the lack of

protection for the weakest.”

“It would be a scandal if all of the eco-

nomic assistance we are observing —

most of it with public money — were

to focus on rescuing those industries

that do not contribute to the inclusion

of the excluded, the promotion of the

least, the common good or the care of

creation,” the pope said.

These are the four criteria that should

be used “for choosing which indus-

tries should be helped: those which

contribute to the inclusion of the ex-

cluded, to the promotion of the least,

to the common good and the care of

creation.”

Pope Francis said the COVID-19 pan-

demic “has exposed the plight of the

poor and the great inequality that

reigns in the world” and it has made

those inequalities and discrimination

even worse.

One of the responses that must not be

missing is the preferential option for

the poor, he said.

This key element of the church’s social

teaching “is not a political option, nor

is it an ideological option,” he said; it

is “at the center of the Gospel.”

Jesus “stood among the sick, the poor,

the excluded, showing them God’s

merciful love,” he said.

The preferential option for the poor is

a duty for all Christians and communi-

ties, he said, and it means doing more

than providing needed assistance; it

requires remedying the root causes

and problems that lead to the need

for aid.

“Many people want to return to nor-

mality” and get back to business, the

pope said, but this “normality” must

not entail ongoing social injustice and

the degradation of the environment.

“The pandemic is a crisis, and we do

not emerge from a crisis the same as

before: either we come out of it

better or we come out of it worse,” he

said. “We must come out of it better”

and build something different.

The world needs an economy and

remedies that do not “poison society,

such as profits not linked to the crea-

tion of dignified jobs,” but rather

profits that benefit the general public.

“We must act now to heal the epi-

demics caused by small, invisible vi-

ruses and to heal those caused by the

great and visible social injustices,” he

said.

By “starting from the love of God,

placing the peripheries at the center

and the last in first place,” he said, “a

healthier world will be possible.”

Recovering from the pandemic will

require action rooted in tangible love,

“anchored in hope and founded in

faith,” he said, “otherwise, we will

come out of the crisis worse.”

The pope concluded by praying, “May

the Lord help us and give us the

strength to come out of it better, re-

sponding to the needs of today’s

world.”
