This will be my last “In the Neighborhood” column. I am handing on the torch of Neighborhood Pastoral Outreach and Parish Vitality to our newest member of the Pastoral Leadership Team, Emily Jenks. I’m so excited to have Emily join our team and parish family. She is in love with Jesus and passionate about our Church. She is committed to making a difference in our local and global communities. And she lives a few blocks away, so is in our neighborhood!

Emily and I have begun to talk about what is involved in this ministry and how it fits into St. Mary’s vision and mission. The first thing is our desire that everyone who walks through our doors experiences the love of Jesus. Last year we focused on hospitality and began to build a greeter ministry to welcome visitors before Mass. St. Mary’s is also being blessed with people excited to join our parish family. We are working on creating an engaging way to welcome and accompany new parishioners.

We also want our neighbors to know we are committed to being a vital presence in our mission field. Last year we developed relationships with the teachers and students at Jefferson School. We also want to be involved in our larger Appleton community and address current issues that affect our brothers and sisters, especially those who are marginalized and discounted. We need to be part of the conversation of what we can do that leads to systemic change and creates a community where everyone thrives.

Going forward, I will be moving into Deacon Gerry’s role as Minister of Pastoral Care now that he is retiring from the Pastoral Leadership Team. He will not be on staff but will continue as our deacon. I am following a long line of amazing Ministers of Pastoral Care, most recently Sr. Joanne, Dcn. Jeff

and Dcn. Gerry. Their ministry is an inspiration to me, and I am excited to minister to our parish family in this position.

One of my responsibilities will be to minister to our elders. I had the chance when Covid-19 hit to organize and facilitate the phone ministry to make sure our elders were safe and had everything they needed. I want to thank all the volunteers who made those calls and let them know how much I appreciated their dedication and care. That gave me a wonderful opportunity to begin to think about our overall ministry to our elders, especially our homebound. We have a new committee of parishioners who are excited about this ministry and want to find creative ways to stay in touch with them.

Another responsibility is to oversee our Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) process. Our parish is blessed to have four adults and one teenager seeking to be received into the Catholic Church. We are meeting through Zoom right now. I will be reaching out to parishioners who expressed an interest in being a part of this incredible, life-changing experience.

Besides planning for baptisms, weddings, and funerals, I will be facilitating the opening up for Masses and other opportunities for prayer and devotions. Our goal is to be as safe as possible and still create a prayerful experience for everyone. Please pray for Emily and me that we keep our eyes on Jesus, so our ministry contributes to the uplifting of all of you in our St. Mary Parish family.

SUNDAY EVENING MASSYes! It is our time to add a Sunday evening 6:30pm Mass to our weekend schedule beginning Sunday July 12, 2020. As people start returning to St. Mary Church, an additional time slot will be needed given our continued requirement for social distancing and sanitizing in between Masses. (Rest assured, that when we return to our full weekend schedule, our Sunday Mass at 8 am will resume!) As many have requested, it will be an opportunity to those who were away for the weekend to attend Mass. As we look to become more engaging, the Sunday evening option may appeal to our younger members and in fact could be an avenue to offer more variety in music. As we explore new ways to connect, this time may also allow for after Mass social gatherings for our youth and before Mass gatherings for adults.

We hope you are excited about this addition as we continue to ask the Holy Spirit’s guidance in making St. Mary Parish Vibrant and Alive in Jesus’ Name and for God’s Glory!
