Where we are

Disk 9 is finished and dispatched to Liverpool (April 04) Disk 8 is finished and dispatched to Liverpool (Aug 04) Disk 7 is almost finished, and will be dispatched this month Disk 6 and 5 are in progress,

» Disk 6 is 60% complete

» Disk 5 is 10% complete Disk 4 is due to begin this week. As of this week we have 3 full time technicians building disks.

NIKHEF has all services for disk 9A and 8A. They have started both. NIKHEF is soon to receive services for 7A

Cooling circuit production

We go through lows and highs with circuit production! Circuit production rate is sufficient…. Just. Problems encountered and resolved include:-

» Incorrect pipes delivered» Huge difficulty bending pipe from UTI (new pipe due soon)» Block supply complicated and intermittent.» Block reaming proved very problematic» Various cleaning problems.

Presently we have 3 contactors, 1 DL lab tech, making circuits and circuit components. We also have money for 1 more contractor if we start to fall behind schedule.

Grounding and Shielding

Everything on disk is grounded accept opto harness wrap, these will be grounded once opto harnesses have passed testing.

Pipe to foil joints will be finally made after precise placement. This is proved to work on top of pipe sleeves.

Grounding finger makes disk assembly more difficult, but not impossible.

Patch panels grounded with foil fingers. Disk grounded to support cylinder via foil

tabs. Foil plating varies in quality, Foils are

only used if they can be easily tinned.

Tapes and Opto

Oxford and Glasgow are ahead in tape supply. Recent problem with w2 tapes, looks like it has been

solved NIKHEF is having problems with tape failiures (new

cover layer) this is yet to be resolved. Opto harness supply looks very good. RAL has

harness ready down to disk 3C. Tapes for spare disks ordered No real worries with tapes any more.

Bottom line

We are quite close to meeting the sheadule laid down by SH in May this year.

The final stages of disk assembly take longer than the schedules suggest.

Very few new problems are presenting them selves.
