The State Education Department has printed this bibliographic guide toaid New York State schools in improving their collection of reference materialsfor Advanced Placement courses. The guide was prepared for the Department inthe spring of 1965 by:
Mr. James NolanEnglish TeacherLinton High SchoolSchenectady, New York
Miss Rita LyonsLibrarianLinton High SchoolSchenectady, New York
It was reviewed in final form by the Bureau of English Education.
Most, if not all, the books and periodicals listed on the following pagesare approvable for 50% reimbursement under the NDEA Title III acquisitionprogram. Materials are listed in $500 groups and should be purchased in suchgroups wherever possible. The groups are listed in the order in which it isrecommended they be purchased; that is, the first group is a basic collectionand successive groups build a more extensive collection.
Procedures for 50% reimbursement are the same as for other eligiblematerials under the Title III acquisition program. Most school administratorsare well acquainted with the procedures. Detailed instructions are givenin the Title III NDEA Planning Guide published by the Title III Office of theState Education Department. Materials can, of course, be purchased by districtsusing only their own funds; but if you wish reimbursement under Title III somegeneral rules are given below:
1. Do not order the following reference materials until you haveapplied for and received approval for their purchase from theTitle III Office of the State Education Department in Albany.Application Form A may be obtained from that office.
2. Federal regulations stress the importance of the project inconsidering items for prior approval. In the purchase of agroup of the following materials, the intended use should bejustified in terms of the objectives of the school's AdvancedPlacement Program. Reference to this publication should beincluded.
3. Order only those items for which actual approval has beengiven by the Title III Office.
4. Librarians and teachers do not apply directly to the TitleIII Office, but through their chief school officer.
5. Use Dewey decimal numbers wherever possible, and list eachbook alphabetically by author. Include information as topublisher, date, and price. (Prices given in this bibliography aresubject to change by the book publishers.)
