Urban/City Modelling
Creating an urban model by
integrating data from the various
design teams. Using this to both
coordinate and communicate
proposals with stakeholders.

Watford
• In 2013 we wanted a new
promotional video
• Northampton’s UD model
• Purpose to show what was going on
in Watford both to our local
community and the opportunities
for investors.
• Challenge was that a lot of what
we were planning was conceptual
• How can we show what the town will
look like
Watford
Our initial requirements…
Watford
More intensive development
• Promo and other initiatives
were successful
• A lot of new investment and
large schemes coming forward
• Degree of nervousness
• How can we create the places
we want?
Watford
Where and how big?
• Started to produce Skyline SPD
• Utilising the UD model from the video
• Simon inserted a number of live
schemes into the UD model
• The UD model is very accurate
• Possible to view new proposals from
multiple locations, see street- lines
and interface with adjoining buildings
• Member and officer workshops saw
confidence grow
Watford
How we use the model?
• Major Applications Review Forum
• Planning Committee
• Developers encouraged to use model
• Access provided to developers to
enhance their scheme
• Model requires investment and
management
• Charge for adding schemes into model
• Work undertaken by specialists
• Profits being reinvested in model
• Developers often construct a 3D
physical model of their scheme
Watford
Where next for Watford’s Urban 3d model?
• Watford 2020 digital programme
• New flyover
• Extend model
• Render buildings
• Add joystick interface
• Print a physical model of the town
• Longer term feed transport model
outputs into UD model to create real
time simulation model of town to inform
future infrastructure investment and
upgrades to public realm linking it with
3D viewers
