HANNA BARBCRA
Hey, hey, hey! It’s me, smarter-than-the-average- bear, Yogi! Today, I'm going to tell you some more about THE FUNTASTIC WORLD OF HANNA- BARBERA. Namely, layout and design. Most folks think about the animator when we mention an animated cartoon, and of course most of the drawings are made by the animation artist. However, there are lots more artists who contribute their talents. Story sketch artists, background artists, ink and paint artists are all needed Jto create characters, costumes, settings, props, and all other elements needed in preparing scenes for animators. *
The layout and design people create the many characters needed in THE FUNTASTIC WORLD OF HANNA-BARBERA. They establish the final models with all their costume detail./They also Work out comparative size relationships of the various
characters. Background styling is also created by the layout and
design department. Each picture has its own special look. For example, The Flintstones design would never be confused with The Herculoids, Scooby-Doo, or with
yours truly’s, The Yogi Bear Show. To show how layout and design really work, let's
start out with a new show idea. It’s about a 14 year old , boy named Babi Ali and his flying horse, Zepher. The setting is-in the time of the Arabian Nights. It is fantasy, mystery and adventure, combined in an ancient far-
eastern kingdom. The design artists work on a number of character
designs for what Babi Ali might look like. Body size, shape of face, hair style, and garment are all sketched and discussed with Joe Barbara and Bill Hanna along with writers and directors. The same work goes into the trial and error creation of the horse, Zepher. Is he to be a dashing-looking animal, a wonder horse, with long cape-like flying mane? Does he sprout wings from
his body or do they spring from his hooves? Or perhaps there is a button or lever on the saddle that
gives Zepher flying power. Or maybe he is a mechanical horse. If the storyline has already detailed this information, the designer concentrates on drawing
the animal that fits the description. In any animated cartoon character design, it is most
important to consider the animation problems. Every unnecessary costume detail is eliminated. Complicated garments and patterns along with jewelry are held to a minimum, for the animator will be called upon to make thousands of drawings and it is important to simplify the design. This helps cut down the animator’s "pencil
mileage.” Once the individual character detail is set, the size
relationship needs to be established. Is Babi Ali to be one-half as tall as the horse, or perhaps about one- third as tall? Again, sketches are made and decisions are arrived at in a number of conferences. This must be done for all characters appearing in the series.
The background scenic design has to go through a variety of creative test sketches. When finalized, the
show will have its own special look. Since this series is based in ancient settings, the
layout artist must do much research on authentic architecture and dress. This means prowling through magazines and books that might supply ideas for the cartoon designs. Furniture, pots, pans, mops, brooms, carts, buckets, and everything that will be a part of the cartoon is carefully explored in order that the animator
will have a ready-to-go set of detailed models. Along with models, the layouts for each individual
scene must be prepared. These show the background detail and the character size as well as the position of the characters within the scene. Key character poses and attitudes are also worked out to assist the animator who has to bring the scenes to life with his
thousands of drawings.
is Funtastic Yogi Bear who has one that is to go into hibernation and
nap. Hey, hey, hey!
