FAILING CONDITIONS

• CAS requirements have not been met. • An assessment component of a subject has not been

submitted to the School • Candidate’s total points are fewer than 24. • Grade E has been awarded for one or both of theory of

knowledge and the extended essay. • There is a grade 1 awarded in a subject/level. • Grade 2 has been awarded three or more times (HL or SL). • Grade 3 or below has been awarded four or more times

(HL or SL). • Candidate has gained fewer than 12 points on HL subjects• Candidate has gained fewer than 9 points on SL subjects

ASSESSMENT

•All subjects are considered equal and NO SCALING IS APPLIED

•Achievement is criterion referenced, not stretched to any preconceived mark range

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT

• Internally completed, marked by teacher, subject to external moderation

• Internally completed, externally marked•Externally-marked examinations

INTERNALLY COMPLETED, MARKED BY TEACHER

•All subjects have a component that is internally marked and then moderated by sending a small sample to a ‘moderator’ to see if the teacher has followed the criteria fairly

•e.g. Individual oral commentary (Lang A), Mathematics exploration task, Economics commentaries

INTERNALLY COMPLETED, EXTERNALLY MARKED WORK

• TOK Essay• Extended Essay• Other subject components, for example

Works in Translation (Language A), Written Task (Language B), Musical links investigation

EXTERNALLY-MARKED EXAMINATIONS

•Written examinations in all subjects except Visual Arts and Theatre

•Two or three papers for most subjects•All external assessment is sent away to appointed examiners, generally overseas

AUTHENTICATION

•This becomes essential with a system that is based on trust between schools and the IB.

•We must be able to certify that it is the student’s own work.

A NOTE ABOUT CAS

Life outside the world of scholarship, a counterbalance to academic studies, a real-world learning experienceCAS must:• occur regularly (a life habit)• be recorded regularly, with reflection and evidence

• be completed by the end of Term 3, Year 12If CAS is incomplete, no Diploma

NEW LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

•Lauriston Girls’ School has to meet the legal requirements and the Victorian Government Safe School Standards

•Theatre RP recording

•Maths Studies Exploration task

•Visual Arts Comparative Study

•Full draft of Chemistry IA

•TOK presentations for many students

YEAR 12 SEMESTER 1 TERM 2

• TOK Camp

• Submit Extended Essay

• Language A Individual Oral Commentary

• Music MLI

• Sciences Extended investigation reports

• GAT (General Achievement Test)

• Semester examinations

SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS

•Marks do not count towards the final IB score

•One of few opportunities to master examination techniques

•A test of how much still needs to be done!

YEAR 12: SEMESTER 2 TERM 3

•Submit all remaining Internal assessments: Language B, Economics, Mathematics, History, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts

•TOK Essay

•Language B individual recorded orals

•CAS electronic folio completed

TERM 3 HOLIDAYS

• ‘October Tests’ – Trial exams in Week 3 of term break

•All trial exams must be completed

•Don’t forget to have a (short) break from study.

YEAR 12 SEMESTER 2 TERM 4

•All written examinations•Three weeks starting 29 October

ADVERSE CIRCUMSTANCES

•See me

•Consideration available for personal trauma as well as illness and injury

•A generous system that is not recorded on the final diploma in any way

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

•No ATAR without a diploma

• IB score is used to create a Notional ATAR for university entrance in Australia

•Overseas application based on IB score

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

•Application in Victoria is through VTAC and organised by the Careers Counsellor

•For overseas see me

•UK may need BMAT, ELAT etc.

•USA needs SATs (Standardized Achievement Tests)

•USA needs Common Application

WHAT PARENTS CAN DO TO HELP

•Understand and support but don’t rescue

•Recognise their professionalism

•Provide food and a taxi service

•Take an interest but don’t take over

•Don’t apply pressure (I’ll do that if necessary)

•Help them see the big picture - in 2 years time they will have forgotten their ATAR
