The output level of theinstrument as well as thequality of the signal can beaffected by the pickup height.Pickup height should beadjusted until the volume ofneck and bridge pickups arealmost equal with bothvolumes wide open. The volume may drop drastically if the pickupheight is too low. As the pickups are magnetic, fret buzzing anddistortion may occur if the pickup is too close to the strings. Use a smallscrewdriver to make adjustments to raise or lower the pickup.

*Instruments that have adjustable pole pieces can be adjusted to balance the output of each string.

    PICKUPS

Ibanez steel string models are equipped with adjustable truss rods. Thepurpose of a truss rod is to adjust the neck to counteract string tension. There are many reasons for truss rod adjustments. One of the mostfrequent reasons is changing string gauges or tuning pitch which canaffect string tension. String tension changes may affect the string heightand cause fret buzz or notes that dont ring true. To adjust the truss rod, locate the truss rod nut and adjust it by inserting the correct wrench intothe nut and tightening (clockwise) or loosening (counter clockwise) therod. Truss rod tension can be measured by installing a capo at the firstfret the holding the strings down at the fret position where the neck joinsthe body. Insert a thickness gauge between the string and the fret at the8th fret. There shouldbetween 0.3 mm to 0.5mmclearance. That clearance isreferred to as neck relief.Too much neck relief cancause the neck to havehigher action in the middle ofthe neck causing poorintonation and uncomfortableplayability. No neck relief cancause fret buzz.

*Appropriate care must be taken whenadjusting the neck and we recommend onlyqualified technicians perform this procedure.

    NECK

egular cleaning of youruitar is one the mostmportant ways you canmaintain the finish andengthen string life. Afterlaying, wipe down your

    nstrument to remove any

erspiration from thenstrument. Perspiration can actually contain acids that can be corrosiveo the strings and metal parts of the guitar. Gloss finish guitars should beolished with polish formulated specifically for musical instruments, andsoft, treated guitar cloth or a cotton rag. Abrasive rags such asolyester can scratch the finish. Oil finished guitars should be wipedlean immediately after playing with a dry cotton rag only. If your guitaras become discolored due to extended use or heavy perspiration, actory appearance, see a qualified guitar repair person about methodso restore the oil finish to its original factory appearance.

    Maintenance

Our congratulations and deepest thanks on

making Ibanez your choice of instrument. Ibanez

tandards are second to none. All Ibanez

nstruments are set up to our strict quality control

tandards before shipping. The purpose of this

manual is to explain how to maintain your

nstruments finish and to keep your guitar playing

as well as it did when it left our factory.

strings become dirty, discolored, or produce aull sound or buzz, replace the strings with newnes. For best results we recommend replacingne string at a time, this will help to avoidemoving the string tension from the neck. Wheneplacing strings with different gauge strings, it

may be necessary to adjust the truss rod tension. We recommend only qualified technicianserform this.) Instruments that have tremoloystems installed may need to be adjusted aftertring replacement as changes in string tensionan cause the tremolo to raise or lower. Ibanezuitars and basses are factory equipped with theollowing string gauges. Please follow the

nstructions below for your particular model.he strings should be tightly wound on to theuning machines from top to bottom with 2 to 3tring wraps around the post. In the case ofnwound guitar strings, the ends of the stringshould be prepared as shown in the diagram torevent unintentional slippage from the posts. Inhe case of tuning machines, where the stringnds are inserted into the posts, the string can beut to length in advance using a pair of stringutters.the tuning machines are sealed gear units, theyre self-lubricating types. The set screws for the tuning knob aredjustment screws that can be tightened with a small Phillips headcrewdriver to increase the tension.

he use of coarse strings may lead to buzzing and sound distortion. Using strings that have twists or kinks mayause buzzing or decreased sustain. Make sure that the new strings are smooth and free from any defects

    before installing.

Intonation adjustment isthe operation ofadjusting the location ofthe string at the saddleto compensate fordifferent string gaugesor different tunings.Follow the instructionsof the particular bridge intonation below. Intonation is properly set whenthe 12th fret note and the 12th fret harmonic are exactly the same note .This is the center point of the scale and the most accurate way of settinga standard scale length. With the harmonic note as the standard, if thefretted note is flat move the bridge saddle forward toward the headstock(a) to decrease the string length. If the fretted note is sharp, move it backaway from the headstock (b) to increase the string length intonationadjustments.

*Please note that strings can be broken when the saddle is moved, so always loosen the strings beforemaking adjustments.

    INTONATION

Ibanez guitar and bass string action is set at thefactory. However there are many reasons that aninstruments string height can change. Instrumentscan be affected by changes in temperature andmoisture. High string action can make the guitardifficult to play. If the string action is too low, fretbuzz or unclear notes can occur. To remedy this, follow the instructions for the particular type ofbridge installed. In the case of string action, makesure the guitar is in tune and the truss rod is adjusted properly. Ibanezaction is set at the 14th fret. The action may also need to be readjustedafter the neck has been adjusted or strings have been changed to adifferent gauge. Follow the instructions in the relevant bridge manual tomake adjustments.

*If strings other than those described above are used, gradually increase the action clearance from the treble side

    through to the bass side.

The Ibanez DOWNSHIFTER allows the pitch of a string to be dropped to apreset desired position with a simple lever operation. To achieve precisetuning for both the up and down positions, you will need to preset bothlever settings before operating the Downshifter.

PLEASE NOTE: The Downshifter device was designed to provide thehighest level of pitch accuracy. However, it should be understood thatthe Downshifter is a mechanical device. Pitch variations and tuningreadjustments, especially after frequent use, are to be expected.

    (C)

tuning screw clockwise to reduce the pitch,or counter clockwise to raise the pitch. Thisadjustment can be done by hand or with astandard screwdriver or a coin until thedesired down pitch is acquired. (The presetfactory pitch is set one whole step down toD.) When the lever is raised to the upposition, the thumbscrew can be turnedfreely but will have no effect on the raised lever pitch. However, it willaffect the settings of down lever pitch.

TUNINGFirst check that the Downshifter lever arm israised to the up position then tune the stringnormally using the standard tuning machineson the headstock.(Note: the Downshifter tuning screw has noeffect on the pitch in the up position.) Next, lower the lever on the Downshifter to the down position and the pitch ofthe string will drop down. Adjust the rear

    1

    2

    3

SPECIAL TUNINGThe Downshifter also allows the pitch to be raised by setting the standardtuning while the lever is in the lower position. When the lever is raised thepitch will also be raised and can be adjusted to the desired pitch.

ADJUSTING THE TREMOLO SPRINGThe tremolo springs adjust thetremolo angle by tightening orloosening the tremolo tension. Toadjust tremolo angle, locate theadjustment screws in the reartremolo cavity. The tremolo systemwhen in tune should sit parallel tothe surface of the guitar as follows. If the tremolo system is not sittingparallel to the surface of the guitar, remove the tremolo cavity coverplate and tighten the Tremolo tension adjustment screws if the tremolois forward dumped. Loosen the screws if the tremolo is up-pulled.

Retune the strings to the proper pitchand check the angle. Choose the numberand placement of the tremolo springsaccording to the string gauge and thetremolo angle.

REPLACING THE STRINGSn the case of EDGE III tremolo, replace thetrings one by one. Removing all the old stringst once will release the tension on the tremolond change the tremolo angle up-pull. Loosenhe Pressure pad screw (D) on the locking nutnd loosen the string to be replaced. Loosen thetring stopper screw (G) and remove the stringrom the saddle. Cut off the ball end of newtring as shown on the illustration and insert the cut side of new stringetween the saddle and the String holder block.Tighten the Stringtopper screw (G) and tune the string. After checking the intonation, ghten the Pressure pad screw (D) on the locking nut.

ADJUSTING THE STRING HEIGHTThe height adjustment of the tremolo can beraised or lowered by adjusting the pivot studs(B) that the tremolo mounts on. These arelocated at either side of the front of the bridge.Clockwise lowers the tremolo and counterclockwise raises the tremolo.

REMOLO ARM INSTALLATIONhe tremolo arm can be inserted and removedery easily. Insert the arm into the armhole onhe tremolo base plate. Pull up on the arm toemove it.

TREMOLO ARMLoosen the screw cap, insert the arm into the tremolo unit, and rotate itto fasten it in place (Fig.8). Rotate the arm to adjust it to the desiredheight. The arm torque is adjusted by the tightness of the screw cap. Toremove the arm, loosen the screw cap and rotate the arm counter-clockwise (Fig.9).

REPLACING THE STRINGSLoosen the string stopper bolt of thelocking nut (Fig.11), completely loosenthe string at the tuning machine, usean Allen wrench to loosen the stringstopper bolt of the bridge saddle(Fig.12 A), and remove the old string.Use wire cutters to remove the ballend from the new string as shown inFigure 13, insert this end of the stringinto the bridge saddle, fasten it firmly, and then tighten the string at thetuning machine. After tuning, checkthe angle of the tremolo unit, andfasten the string stopper bolt of thelocking nut to finish the procedure.

REMOLO ARM INSTALLATIONhe tremolo arm can be inserted andemoved very easily. Insert the arm intohe armhole on the tremolo base plate. Pullp on the arm to remove it.

DJUSTING THE INTONATIONoosen the Pressure pad screw (D) on theocking nut and loosen the string to be adjusted.oosen the Saddle lock screws (F) on the saddleo be adjusted and adjust the saddle forward orackward. Tighten the Saddle lock screw (F)nd tune the string. After rechecking thentonation, tighten the Pressure pad screw (D).

DGE IIIDJUSTING THE TREMOLO SPRINGhe tremolo springs adjust the tremolongle by tightening or loosening theremolo tension. To adjust tremolongle, locate the adjustment screws inhe rear tremolo cavity. The tremoloystem when in tune should sit parallelo the surface of the guitar as follows.the tremolo system is not sitting parallel to the surface of the guitar,

emove the tremolo cavity cover plate and tighten the Tremolo tensiondjustment screws if the tremolo is forward dumped. Loosen the screws

if the tremolo is up-pulled.Retune thestrings to the proper pitch and check theangle. Choose the number and placementof the tremolo springs according to thestring gauge and the tremolo angle.

DJUSTING THE ACTIONo adjust the entire tremolo unit up or down,

se an Allen wrench to turn the stud bolt (E)ocated at the left and right of the tremolonit. (This cannot be adjusted for each

    ndividual string.)

INE TUNINGven after locking the locking nut, you can usehe fine tuners to make fine adjustments to theuning of each string. You should adjust all ofhe fine tuners (C) to the center of adjustableange before you lock the locking nut.

RM ACTIONhe tremolo arm action can be adjusted bysing a 3.0mm Allen wrench on the screw (B)f the tremolo screw.

ARM ROTATION TORQUEhe rotation torque of the arm can be adjustedy raising the tremolo and inserting a 1.5mmllen wrench in the screw (A) on the tremololock, turning this screw clockwise willghten the arm torque and turning the screwounter clockwise will loosen the arm torque.

ADJUSTING THE INTONATION &THE STRING HEIGHT (FAT 6)The intonation can be adjusted byadjusting the saddle forward orbackward using a philips(+) headadjustment screw at the rear of thebridge. String height is controlled byraising or lowering the small allenscrews using a wrench on either sideof the saddle.

TREMOLO ARM INSTALLATIONThe tremolo arm can be inserted andremoved very easily. Insert the arminto the armhole on the tremolo baseplate. Pull up on the arm to remove it.

ARM ROTATION TORQUEThe rotation torque of the arm can beadjusted by raising the tremolo andinserting a 1.5mm Allen wrench inthe screw (A) on the tremolo block,Turning this screw clockwise willtighten the arm torque and turningthe screw counter clockwise willloosen the arm torque.

ADJUSTING THE STRING HEIGHT (FAT20/FAT10/SAT10)The height adjustment of the tremolo can be raised or lowered byadjusting the pivot studs (C) that the tremolo mounts on. These arelocated at either side of the front of the bridge. Clockwise lowers thetremolo and counter clockwise raises the tremolo.

ADJUSTING THE STRING HEIGHT (SAT PRO)To adjust the action of eachstring, use a 1.5 mm Allenwrench to turn the screw on thesaddle (C). The overall heightcan be adjusted on either sideof the SAT PRO tremolo unit. Toadjust the height, use a 3 mmAllen wrench to turn the stud (D)located on either side of theunit. Use caution whenadjusting the height of the entire tremolo unit; adjust both sides to thesame height to ensure optimum tremolo operation.

    FAT/SAT (expect FAT6)

ADJUSTING THE TREMOLO SPRINGA standard tremolo can be adjustedso that the pitch can be raised whenthe tremolo arm is pulled up toloosen the tremolo springs locatedunder the tremolo cavity on the backof the guitar. One disadvantage ofthis procedure is that it can causethe pitch to go sharp if string breaks. To remedy this, adjust the tremoloplate so it sits flush on the body bytightening the tremolo springs.Choose the number andplacement of the tremolosprings according to the stringgauge and the tremoloadjustment . FLOATING PARALLEL

REPLACING THE STRINGSTo replace strings, thread the newstrings through the string holeslocated on the back of the guitar. Thestrings are then threaded through thetremolo block and up and over thesaddle.

    FAT/SAT TREMOLO

    Tremolos

ARM ROTATION TORQUEhe rotation torque of the arm can bedjusted by raising the tremolo andnserting a 2.0mm Allen wrench inhe screw (A) on the tremolo block, urning this screw clockwise willghten the arm torque and turninghe screw counter clockwise willoosen the arm torque.

INE TUNINGven after locking the locking nut,ou can use the fine tuners to makene adjustments to the tuning ofach string.ou should adjust all of the fineuners (C) to the center of theirdjustable range before you lock theocking nut.

RM ACTIONhe tremolo arm action can bedjusted by using a 2.0mm Allen

wrench on the screw (B) of theremolo block.

DJUSTING THE ACTIONo adjust the entire tremolo unit upr down, use an Allen wrench to turnhe stud bolt (E) located at the leftnd right of the tremolo unit. (This

annot be adjusted for eachndividual string.)

    EDGE PRO II TREMOLO

REPLACING THE STRINGSThe EDGE-PRO II tremolo will accommodateeither strings from which the ball end hasbeen cut, or conventional strings fromwhich the ball end has not been cut.To remove a string, use a 3 mm Allenwrench to loosen the pressure pad screw ofthe locking nut (Fig.1), remove the stringfrom the tuning machine, and use a 3 mmAllen wrench to loosen the string stopperscrew of the saddle (Fig.2). Turning thiscounter-clockwise will automatically retractthe holder block, so loosen the string stopperscrew all the way until the holder blockstops retracting. Remove the old string, insert approximately 3 cm of the new stringwith ball end into the saddle, and whilemaking sure that the string is positioned inthe center of the saddle, tighten the stringstopper screw (Fig.2). Turning this clockwisewill automatically advance the holder block,so after making sure that the string is firmlyfastened, wind the string around the tuningmachine post, tune it, and then tighten thepressure pad of the locking nut. When installing a wound string from which the ball end has been cut off,you can leave the overwound portion of the winding intact in order toprevent the winding from loosening. Insert approximately 1~3 cm of the

tip into the saddle, and install the string in the same way as aconventional string from which the ball end has not been cut off.Since the attachment angle of the tremolo will change significantly if allstrings are removed at once, you s hould replace the strings one at a time.On the bottom of each saddle there is a guide stopper that indicates thelength of string to be inserted. The appropriate length will be inserted ifyou insert the string until the tip contacts this guide. If a string breaks at the saddle, it may fall into the tremolo cavity whenyou loosen the string stopper screw. Remove the broken string either bydetaching the tremolo spring cavity cover plate from the back of theguitar, or from the opening in the cover plate. If the broken springremains in the saddle, remove it from above.

Note: Before you tune a string, make sure that the string stopper screw is firmly tightened.Note: To prevent the string stopper screw from falling out, do not loosen it more than threeturns after the holder block has stopped retracting.

DJUSTING THE INTONATIONefore you adjust the intonation, use a 3 mm Allen wrench to loosen theressure pad screws (G) of the locking nut so that the strings areeleased. Use a 2 mm Allen wrench to loosen the saddle lock screws (F)f each saddle, and move the saddle. Firmly tighten the saddle lockcrews, tune the guitar, and then check the intonation. Repeat thesedjustments until the intonation is correct, and then tighten the pressuread screws of the locking nut.ou may install each saddle lock screw in either the forward or rearosition, depending on the position of the saddle.he unit is designed so that the fine tuning screw will not operate if theosition of the saddle extends beyond the front edge of the base plate.

ote: When loosening the saddle lock screws, you must loosen the strings sufficiently beforeaking adjustments.

FINE TUNINGEven after locking the lockingnut, you can use the fine tuners(Fig.10 A) to make fineadjustments to the tuning ofeach string.

You should adjust all of the finetuners to the center of theiradjustable range before you lockthe locking nut.

    ZR (ZERO RESISTANCE) TREMOLO

TREMOLO SPRINGSThe EDGE-PRO II tremolo is designed tofunction optimally when it is installedapproximately parallel with the surfaceof the guitar body (Fig.4). The angle atwhich the tremolo is attached can beadjusted by changing the length of thetremolo springs inside the tremolo springcavity in the back of the guitar body.Working through the adjustment holes inthe tremolo spring cavity cover plate, usea Philips (+) screwdriver to turn thetremolo tension adjustment screws toadjust the length of the tremolo springs.

If the tremolo is tilted forward toward theneck of the guitar (Fig.5), turn the screwsclockwise to tighten the springs.Conversely, if the tremolo is tiltedbackward away from the neck (Fig.6),turn the screws counter-clockwise toloosen the springs. Tune the guitaraccurately, re-check the angle of thetremolo, and repeat the adjustment untilthe tremolo angle is correct. The EDGE-PRO II tremolo is designed to functionoptimally when three springs aretensioned equally with a 0.009" gaugeset of strings installed. If you replace the strings with a different gauge set,you can adjust the tremolo angle by changing the number of springs or theway in which the springs are installed.Loosen all strings before you add or remove a tremolo spring. The EDGE-PRO II tremolo uses a block lock mechanism to fasten thetremolo springs to the block. Before you change the number of springs orthe way in which they are installed, use a Philips (+) screwdriver toremove the block lock (Fig.7).

NOTE: If you want to install four or five tremolo springs, insert the springs into the block nutattachment screw holes. (In this case, it will not be possible to attach the block nut.)

    FIG.7

ADJUSTING THE ACTIONTo adjust the entire tremolo unit up or down, use an Allen wrench to turnthe stud bolt (Fig.10 B) located at the left and right of the tremolo unit.(This cannot be adjusted for each individual string.)

ADJUSTING THE INTONATIONLoosen the string stopper bolt of thelocking nut (Fig.11). Remove theintonation adjustment bolt (Fig.12 B)from within the bridge unit, fasten itinto the screw hole in the rear of thesaddle, and tighten it so that the tip ofthe bolt contacts the boss of thebridge unit. Loosen the saddle lock bolt(Fig.10 C), and turn the intonationadjustment bolt to adjust the positionof the saddle. After checkingthe intonation, tighten the Pressure pad screw (C) on the locking nut.

*To allow maximum fine tuning adjustment, it is recommended that the fine tuners be set to the middle positionbefore locking the nut.

    ADJUSTING THE INTONATION

Loosen the Pressure pad screw (C) on thelocking nut and loosen the string to be adjusted.Loosen the Saddle lock screws (D) on the saddleto be adjusted and adjust the saddle forward orbackward. Tighten the Saddle lock screw (D)and tune the string. After rechecking theintonation, tighten the Pressure pad screw (C).

*On the base plate there are two holes for each Saddle lock screw. These allow the user to change string gaugeswhile allowing the maximum saddle movement. If the intonation cannot be adjusted because the saddle needsto be set back further, remove the intonation screw and insert it into the hole located further back on the bridgeplate.

With the guitar tuned correctly, adjust the

Main Spring make sure that the Stop Rod

makes contact with the Tremolo Block

    and Stopper.

If the Stop Rod does not make contact

with the Tremolo Block and Stopper,

adjust the Main Spring adjustment screw

    until contact is made.

With the guitar tuned correctly, Stop Rod

must make contact with the Tremolo

Block and Stopper. If it is adjusted

correctly, the tension while pushing down

on the arm will be slightly less than

tension while pulling up.The balance of

force is about 3:7 (With this setup, stop

rod must the tremlo block and stopper

even the 1st string is comlpetely loosened.)

Again, if the Stop Rod does not make

    contact with theTremolo Block and

    Stopper, adjust the Main Spring

    adjustment screwuntil contact is made.

When a string breaks, because of the tension of neck, the tuning of other strings will be a

little higher butstill limits within acceptable range.

TREMOLO ARM ADJUSTMENT(SAT PRO)To adjust the height of the arm, remove the tremolo spring coverfrom the back of the guitar, and usea 3 mm Allen wrench to turn theheight adjustment screw attached tothe bottom of the tremolo block.Tightening this in the clockwisedirection will raise the height.

ADJUSTING THE ZERO POINT SYSTEMThe Zero Point system makes it easier totune a floating tremolo unit, providesgreater tuning stability after arming, andlimits the tuning drift that wouldotherwise occur when a string breaks.*If the Zero Point system is notadjusted to the correct position it willnot function optimally, since it willeither be completely floating, or theZero Point system and the stringtension will be in balance. You mustperform this adjustment accurately.

INTONATION ADJUSTMENT(SATPRO)To adjust the intonation, use a 1.5 mmAllen wrench to turn the screw locatedat the rear of the saddle (E). Turn thescrew clockwise to move the saddletoward the rear, or counter-clockwiseto move the saddle forward.INTONATION ADJUSTMENT(FAT20)To assure that no movement canoccur each saddle has a set screwthat locks the saddle. When adjusting theintonation, loosen the saddle lock screwusing a 2mm Allen wrench. (D)To adjust the intonation, insert a 2.5mmAllen wrench into the saddle screw at therear of the tremolo. Turning the wrenchclockwise will adjust the saddlebackward. Counter clockwise will adjustthe saddle forward. After the correctintonation location of the saddle is settighten the saddle lock down screw toassure no movement will occur. (E)

SWITCHING TO FLOATING OPERATIONBy stopping the Zero Point system fromfunctioning, you can make the tremolofloat completely. While holding the armup, remove the stop rod and sub spring. With the guitar tuned correctly, use themain spring adjustment knob (Fig. 14E)to adjust the angle of the tremolo unit. Ifthe tremolo unit is tilted forward towardthe neck, turn the spring adjustmentknob in the plus (+) direction.Conversely, if the tremolo unit is tiltedbackward away from the neck, turn thespring adjustment knob in the minus (-)direction.*You will need to tune repeatedly duringthe process of adjusting the tremoloangle in the floating state, since thetuning will drift each time you adjust themain spring adjustment knob.
