iBeacon Technology is an indoor positioning system that allows hardware running Bluetooth Low Energy to communicate with iOS devices in close proximity. This allows the iOS device to display alerts and/or notifications.

Why does it matter?
Scenario #1 (pre-iBeacon App): A first time customer purchases a sweater at your clothing store. The next time she walks by, she figures that you still have the same old merchandise and doesn’t bother to come in and check out the new seasonal clothes.
Scenario #2 (with iBeacon app): A customer installed and activated your app to get 10% off of her first purchase at your clothing store. The next time she walks by, her app detects the iBeacon in your store. Because the app recognizes that this is only the second time the customer has come near the store, the app pushes a notification to the user’s iPhone, alerting her that you are able to offer her a special buy-one-get-one free deal on a specific new piece of merchandise that is of similar taste to her previous purchase.
This customer not only comes into the store and buys the new item, but she got 3 of her friends to download the app through her referral code, thus earning 5% off her next purchase. You can now push proximity notifications to 4 people who are more likely to convert into returning customers.
