The convergence of emerging technologies enables a new concept: telepresence

- Facilitates real-time, global communications

- Supports the ability to communicate immediately and effectively across multiple locations

- Enables faster decision making and reduced travel

- Makes subject matter experts and licensed professionals available to multiple locations simultaneously

- Provides the kind of in-person interaction that builds trust -both within the organization and between organizations Cisco TelePresence

Emerging technologies have entered the mainstream to make telepresence possible

New video compression standards

- New, open-standard MPEG video encoding and decoding provide high-quality video

High-definition video display

- Broadcast and consumer applications are driving development of high-resolution standards now being transferred to enterprise applications

Ubiquitous high-bandwidth telecommunication services

- Networks are moving to Internet Protocol (IP)-based convergence for voice, video and data

- Bandwidth capacities are continuing to increase

IBM is partnering with Cisco

The Cisco TelePresence solution provides:

A virtual meeting table

- Uses life-size, high-definition plasma display screens

- Leverages a camera cluster to provide natural eye contact and full-room coverage

A special screen for details under discussion

- Displays computer-generated data from a laptop

- Captures images from an overhead document camera

Simple and transparent use

- Launches with the push of a single button

- Requires no attendants

Cisco TelePresence Network Requirements

Converged networks are recommended for maximum Return on Investment

- Benefit from increased bandwidth for data applications when TelePresence is not using the bandwidth, allowing customers to leverage bandwidth upgrades made for TelePresence to roll out new/additional applications

- Following best-practice QoS recommendations, no more than 33% of the link should be allocated to TelePresence

• CTS-1000 = 5.5 Mbps. Minimum circuit speed = 16 Mbps

• CTS-3000 = 14.6 Mbps. Minimum circuit speed = 45 Mbps

Overlay (dedicated) networks are also supported

- 33% rule does not apply in this case. Reserve 2% of the link for routing protocol and management traffic overhead. Round up to the nearest whole Mbps to be safe

• CTS-1000 = 5.5 Mbps. + 2% = 5.6 Mbps (round up to 6 Mbps) + burst

• CTS-3000 = 14.6 Mbps. + 2% = 14.9 Mbps (round up to 15 Mbps) + burst
