Each variation of a product must be managed as a separate product

Following the previous example

Adding the new rule for Age less then 25 needs to be done twice

Changing the new minimum age for 18 to 16 needs to be done in 6 places

There is no system to verify that neither the checking account nor credit card has been changed

There is no system to increase the maintenance charge on the credit card if the required average balances aren’t maintained

Each different rate on a 90 day Term Deposit ends can result in the creation of a different product

MDMCE and ODM help simplify management of complex offerings

Variants and relationships are used to reduce the number of products managed.

Administration, Monitoring, and Enforcement of business rules prevents components from being closed

independently and makes it easy to present the correct offer to consumers under the right conditions.

IBM’s Master Data Governance Approach Common challenge with MDM implementations: Insufficient governance, lack

of clear understanding how to establish and execute governance on MDM

implementations

IBM’s solution: InfoSphere Master Data Policy Management

Includes Master Data Policy Administration, Monitoring (MDPM), and Enforcement

MDPM productized based on work with SaskTel

Established a Master Data Governance Organization

Were looking to established best practices and tools to monitor quality and

consistency of master data

Needed to monitor golden record completeness, uniqueness and accuracy

Apply probabilistic matching to master data quality characteristics – competitive

differentiator, no other vendor offers this!

MDPM monitors metrics and KPIs via reports and data quality policy targets set by data

governance; allows custom alerts (Cognos)

MDPM enhanced with BPM data stewardship samples provides end-to-end data

stewardship process driven by data governance KPIs

Included in Standard Edition, can be used in Advanced and Enterprise Editions

Competitive Edge: Probabilistic Approach to Master Data Quality

You heard it right! Not just probabilistic approach to matching that has been proven

over the last decade and used by many MDM hub vendors now

We are beginning to use probabilistic approach for a broader set of data quality

characteristics on MDM projects and this is unique IBM capability on the market

Completeness: How complete is the golden record for the purpose of match?

Uniqueness: How unique is really the golden record? How “golden” is it?

Accuracy: How accurate is the source data compared to the golden record?

Accuracy Compared

Take Aways

Why customers need this functionality?

– Customers obtain data governance capabilities OOTB

– These capabilities enable monitoring of data quality characteristics of master data such as

Completeness, Uniqueness, and source-to-golden record consistency

– BPM data stewardship samples developed in release 10.1 resolve data quality issues

reported and identified in MDPM

– Simplified governance of the quality of master data (in the same way as the probabilistic

algorithm simplified governance for matching)

– Decreased total cost of ownership through more efficient data governance and stewardship

Why is this meaningful from a competitive standpoint?

– Unlike other vendors proposing data quality technologies that mandate data quality

requirements, MDPM offers a configurable, matching algorithm-based data quality solution

OOTB

– MDPM in conjunction with purposely developed BPM samples provides OOTB solution for

many data quality problems OOTB without asking for data quality rules

– With release 10.1 we can sell MDM as a Master Data Governance solution (we sold MIH as

RDM in the past)

– When an RFx requires a matching algorithm, we can claim thought leadership and

innovation in applications of the matching algorithm for a broader range of data quality

characteristics. No other vendor does this.
