Dear Brothers, Sisters and friends of Henrik Ibsen Lodge,

Hurra for Sytttende Mai and Hurra for Henrik Ibsen! We received a 3rd

place in our Lodge presentation at the Parade. We should all be very proud of our Lodge. I believe we had some 20 Norwegian Flags, we were outstanding. In all 28 Norwegian flags we sold to members within our Lodge at $5 a piece, it was a bargain. Ken, kudos to you for making this purchase possible. And again as in previous years, Norden Lodge shared a bus with us, so Karen Olsen “Thank you”. After the Parade most of us, if not all, met at the Swedish Club for some relaxation. We had a most pleasant day; hopefully we will get some more members to come with as next year. That will be the 200th anniversary of Henrik Wergeland’s birth. Henrik Wergeland is the father of the first official “17de Mai tog i Oslo” in 1833 and 1853 the first “Barnetog”. Since then, the 17th May celebration belongs to the children—Politicians stay away on this day. Our May meeting was also a success, with Financial Advisors Dan Tohill and his colleague George Matzat. They made a most inter-esting presentation on how to prepare for our retirement. What made me most concerned was how much Long Term Care can cost: 730,000 kroner ($130,000) per year! At our October meeting Sverre Aas-gaarden from Sons of Norway will cover a similar seminar. On Saturday June 9, our Youth Director Sherry Stensaker will marry Joseph Sherman of Garborg Lodge. On behalf of all the member of Henrik Ibsen we congratulate the Happy Couple and wish them well. Now for some upcoming Henrik Ibsen Events: 1. June 9: Henrik Ibsen Yard Sale at our regular meeting place,

Christ Evangelical Church in Islip. We need a lot of items because our War Chest is getting empty. And please don’t forget we do need your help.

    2. June 14: Zone Scholarship Play at Airport Playhouse. 3. June 15: our membership meeting.

    a. We need to sew up any outstanding items for our LOV week-end September 21.

    b. We will have a quick Officers meeting at 7:15pm followed by normal meeting at 8:00pm.

    4. August 19: Zone Picnic at Loyal Lodge 12 noon to 5pm. 5. August 25: Ken and Renee Johnson’s Pool Party 6. September 21: Henrik Ibsen at LOV. The September membership

meeting will be held there. It appears we will be close to having a full house.

June is a wonderful time for the lodges. It is the time to get ready for summer and prepare for picnics, lobster parties and fun times to just kick back and relax. To all the members who are planning to travel: May you have a wonderful and enjoyable trip. Next summer we are thinking about having another cruise after the Interna-tional Convention in San Diego in late August 2008, nothing has been confirmed to date, however, we all had such a great time on the cruise to Alaska, we thought we would try something again. I have great news! For those lodges that could not fit the Leadership training into the spring season, the re-imbursement to the Third District (and the other dis-tricts) from the International Board of Directors was ex-tended through October 31, 2007. This should give all the trainers and the lodges the opportunity to schedule the training session. I must say that I am disappointed that the lodges have not taken advantage of this program. If you have not scheduled your day yet, shame on you! It is truly worthwhile, or we would not be pushing so hard to get this completed. It is “For You” and these trainers are giving their time and themselves to present this pro-gram to you. PLEASE take full advantage of this work-shop. You will really be encouraged and can discuss anything the lodge feels is worth brainstorming about. It is tailored for the lodges. I am watching closely to see all the lodges that have done the workshop and will contact those lodges who do not schedule and ask “WHY?” This is a program for all members, officers, and future officers. You would be amazed how much you can learn. I learn something about the lodges each time I visit or attend training workshops; furthermore we all can learn something new each day. It will benefit you and benefit your lodge. The trainers are ready to contact you again, so please give your members and officers the chance to better your lodge.

  • B. Berntsen, District 3 letter continued... Our family has an exciting event this June. On June 9th, my youngest cousin, Joseph Sherman, will marry a wonderful person: Sherry Stensaker, a member of Henrik Ibsen Lodge. How small this world becomes. They didn’t even meet through Sons of Norway but it just fell into place. We are so pleased she is joining our family.

I want to remind everyone to research for applicants for the Leif Erikson Citation Award, Sister Gail sent out letters to the lodges a few months back, but as you are sitting around the pool or lounging on the deck, think of those who you feel are worthy of this extraordinary award. In the past, we have received exceptional applicants and I feel we will again. Please take time over the summer to collect the facts and forward them back to the district. I want to congratulate Suncoast Lodge for their 30th Anniversary and I am sorry I could not make it down there for the regatta. I will be there next year. Fram Lodge will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary on June 3rd. It was a great year for the district, with the institution of many lodges back in the 1970’s. There were 16 lodges that are still in existence today that were started between 1970 and 1979. There were a few more but they no longer hold their charter. Many of those holding strong began in Florida. I hope the institution of North Carolina Vikings starts a trend for the 2000’s. We instituted Maine Nordmenn in 2003, and Vice President Ralph is working on the second lodge in North Carolina. This could be the new “hot spot” but all areas are being reviewed: Georgia, Vermont, New Hampshire. Ralph checks on the state census checking for people who claim to be of Norwegian decent and follows up in that area. It could be a great way to check for new members. I was amazed at the number of people (first or second, etc. generation) that claim to be Norwegian. Try it; you will be as amazed as I am. Please let me know if you have any luck. I want to wish all the fathers a wonderful Father’s Day. I hope to see you over the summer visiting the picnics.

Have a wonderful Sank t Hans … Barbara

Attention Parents of Active Children Orienteering is an outdoor activity which can be thought of as a treasure hunt, only instead of jewels, the object is to find orange and white markers called controls. It is an activity which requires the use of a highly detailed map of the area and a compass to find your way through a given course. Although not well known in the United States, orien-teering is well known throughout the world and may become an Olympic sport in the near future. It is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone because you determine the level of physical activity. Family groups, scout groups, and seniors, all enjoy orien-teering. Last Spring meet:

    • Sun 6/10 Caumsett State Park Check www.liorienteering.org for more info and events. Check website prior to meets to make sure there are no changes in location. Registration for the meets is generally 11 AM - 1 PM and it ends about 3 PM. The cost is $10 per meet which includes the orienteering map of the park. The Zone 1 Orienteering Championship is coming up this Fall (Dave Morris Challenge). Maybe you can take home the Championship plaque for our Lodge!

    [email protected]

    • Congratulations Sherry Stensaker for her upcoming marriage to Joe Sherman on June 9, 2007.

    • We have our Yard Sale this month. Please, please, please go to your local supermarket (Stop & Shop is the best) and ask for a contribution or donation. Present yourself to the manager with the Yard Sale letter (written on official letterhead, handed out last meeting) and your S.O.N. ID if possible. If you need another letter, let me know.

    • Tubfrim: Gladys Everson is still collecting cancelled stamps. Make a little pile somewhere in your house. Bring them in next meeting.

    • For those of you wondering about Jane Mawhinney’s whereabouts: She’s been cruising around Hawaii with her son Scott. She’s back & says she had a great time.

    Attention Officers: Regalia Ribbons...missing!

At April’s meeting the Norwegian ribbon was given to all the officers for their regalia pins. We did this so that the pins would go onto the ribbon and not into our suits and blouses leaving pin marks. There were quite a few missing at May’s meeting. Maybe some folks took them home. If so...could you please return your ribbon to the regalia envelopes? The regalia pins can stay attached to the ribbon. This ribbon was hard to get. Bette Stahl will be returning to Minnesota in June and hopes to find some more.

Norwegians are used to strawberries in abundance and at reasonable prices this time of year. Not so this season: A cold and wet spring and early summer has reduced harvests and increased prices fivefold. The tempting berries now cost up to NOK 100 a basket, against NOK 20 a basket in

normal years. “I have worked with the strawberry market for 30 years, and I have never seen a more miserable season and more outlandish prices. There is a great demand for strawberries, but no one can deliver. The way things look, prices will remain high for a long time”, says Are Meinch-Bakke of the National Agriculture Administration.

Syttende Mai: This unique parade has become a world attraction, and each year thousands of visitors from all over the world come to watch. A few have been fortunate to obtain special seats set up in front of the Royal Palace, mainly reserved for diplomats and special guests. The length of this year's parade is a new record: 40,000 children from 107 schools participated. The long parade marched up Oslo's main street, Karl Johans Gate, to the Royal Palace, where they wee received by the Royal Family standing on the front balcony, waving to the crowd.

Aker voted most attractive workplace: Aker Kvaerner achieved the top score and was ranked the

most attractive workplace of the world’s 600 largest companies in an international survey. The survey refers to Norwegians as confident that the Aker companies give their employees fair compensation, take good care of them, and offer equal job opportunities for everyone. According to the survey company, the project is the result of over 60,000 online interviews with consumers in 29 countries on six continents. More than 175,000 ratings were collected to develop reliable measurements of the ‘corporate reputation’ of over 1,000 companies. The companies were rated by consumers in their home country.

Nytt fra Norge So what’s going on over there anyhow?

I hope Trudy Stensaker recuperates well. We need to convince her to stop skiing down those black diamond Alps. Trudy: disregard Darlene the next time she points you down that direction. Rusty: you have so many good jokes. I’m hoping you’re going to send me one soon. A few of our members will be in Norway this summer. Please bring back pictures for us to see. Hopefully we can find a moment for you to share with the whole group. Have a wonderful summer!
