    The Question

    replanting.

    The Problem

The ICES Williams garden iscurrently a dead space, and itreflects poorly on the college and on ICES.

The current space shows disregard andlack of commitment from the partiesinvolved. Its exclusive use prevents student interestand education, especially due to the fence

surrounding the space. The worldview that underlies this problemis that a traditional garden, run bystudents, is too difficult to sustain in a

    collegiate setting.

    The Mission

We want to create a micro-forest a place for relaxation, forbecoming one with nature. Our goal is to

transform the Williams ICES garden into aforest and medicinal herb garden, whichwill allow the student population tointeractively learn about this new idea of

gardening. Not only will the students gainknowledge, they will have abeautiful place to sit as well as a few

natural and healthy snacks to munchon.

    The Connections

We linked our project to some topics that have beendiscussed in class.

The garden (and other projects like it) should be partof the IC environmental policy that provides the

framework for sustainable development at IthacaCollege.

The garden also relates to the reading aboutworldviews. It would encourage a human andenvironment connection worldview because thegarden could build a relationship with students and

nature. It would also teach people about the limitednature of natural resources and encourageknowledge about sustainability.

It also links to the VandanaShiva video because thegarden could create a sense of culture and place. Itwould be an open source of knowledge for allmembers of the Ithaca College community.

    The Future

Support for the garden needs to be rebuilt inorder for a new one to flourish. In order to ensure consistency within the

students working on the garden and supportfor the project it would be most effective tocreate a group focused on that particularspace within ICES.A student group would allow for: recruiting from the student body

meetings to keep the line of communicationopen

steady funding through ICES, an established

    organization
