A low-carbon alternative to electric or fossil fuels heating that could save you up to £880 a year

What is biomass?Biomass renewable heating systems burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide warmth in a single room and can power central heating and hot water boilers.

Central heating systems using locally sourced sustainable wood fuel are a low carbon alternative to fossil fuels and can be cheaper to run than o-gas alternatives.

How does it work?A boiler burns logs, pellets or chips, and is connected to a central heating and hot water system. A wood-fuelled biomass boiler could save you up to £880 a year compared to electric heating*.

What do I need?Suitable properties should have enough space to install the heating system (inside or outside) and store the fuel, and have a locally available wood fuel source.

The benets of biomass heating

1 Aordable heating fuelThe price of wood fuel varies considerably but it is often cheaper than other ways of heating your home.

2 Financial supportWood fuel boiler systems could benet from the Renewable Heat Incentive. For a four-bedroom detached house, you could receive payments of around £1,730 to £2,610 a year**. In addition, the Home Energy Scotland renewables loan scheme is currently open to new applications. Interest-free loans for up to 75 per cent of the total cost of renewables systems are available up to £10,000.

3 A low-carbon optionThe carbon dioxide emitted when wood is burned is the same amount that was absorbed over the months and years that the plant was growing. The process is sustainable as long as new plants continue to grow in place of those used for fuel. There are some carbon emissions caused by the cultivation, manufacture and transportation of the fuel, but as long as the fuel is sourced locally, these are much lower than the emissions from fossil fuels.

Find out how you can save energy and more money and book a free home visit to assess your property.

*Based on a typical four-bed detached solid-walled home switching from electric storage heating to a biomass pellet boiler. Using an o-peak (Economy 7) electricity price of 7.22p/kWh and a wood pellet price of 4.77p/kWh (bulk price). Prices correct as of February 2015 and valid for 2015.

**Based on an RHI tari of 8.93p/kWh, valid for installations made between April 1 and June 30, 2015.

Boom time for talent…Do you recognise our cover stars? Perhaps not so much because they’re famous, more likely you’ve just seen them round about the place. Or maybe you’ve seen their bands performing locally. If you haven’t, you’re missing a treat – these are just four of a mini-tsunami of really plausible local bands happening right now. We think it’s the strongest depth of talent for years and we’re so pleased that these four (along with some others) will be featuring as part of this year’s XPO North event (10-11 JUN). On p28 you’ll fi nd details of these acts’ latest releases available to buy - please support them, you won’t be disappointed. We think they could all go far, and then we can all remember when Myles, Josh, Niall and Ross used to rub shoulders with us mere mortals. Love them. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Inside issue 154 – ART: IMAG have a LEGO show (yay!); XPO North are ‘Hunting For Lost Crafts’, while Castle Gallery know where theirs are. | FILM: Major newies are Jurassic World or Minions, then Ian McKellen plays Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock, Ryan Gosling plays David Lynch, Eden Court play a series of Marx Brothers movies and there’s a musical about prostitute murders in Ipswich. | KIDS: The Cat In The Hat comes to our town, you’ll smile if you see it but miss it - you’ll frown. Plus a new TFX show with local talent aplenty and a cute show, The Edibles, for 3-7yr olds. | MUSIC: Our cover stars (see above) play XPO North; elsewhere you can catch John Cooper Clarke, Eddi Reader, The Kilkennys, a new music fest in Forres, Music Farm, an Edith Piaf show, the Mahler Players and more… | SPECIALS: XPO North is where it’s at - spanning music, fi lm, writing, art, crafts and more. Readallaboutit! | SPORT: It’s the World Mountain Bike Championships again; plus a new golf event, Spey Valley Golf Club’s Scottish Hydro Challenge… | THEATRE: Rab C Nesbitt (Gregor Fisher) has turned into a chip-munching old woman in National Theatre’s Yer Granny - sporting an all-star TV cast; as does the fast-paced comedy-thriller The Ghost Train; an awesome-sounding dance theatre show, Crazy Jane, which goes ‘from the brothel to the Moulin Rouge’ assisted by ace Scottish hip-hop act Hector Bizerk (who you can also catch at XPO.N & Music Farm); Florians treat us to a midsummer Midsummer Night’s Dream; and there’s comedy giant Reginald D Hunter and much more! This month’s blockbusters are undoubtedly destined to be JURASSIC WORLD [1] (EC & Vue from 11 JUN) - and MINIONS [2] (Vue from 26 JUN). One involves weird, unrealistic looking animated creatures causing havoc all over the place, the other one is Minions. Haha. And sticking with the top sellers, last month’s blockbusters this month include AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (05 Jun), PITCH PERFECT 2 (05 Jun) and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (19 Jun) – if you missed them in May, get down to Eden Court. At least two of those are well worth it. The best releases of the month are a little further from the beaten path however…

RYAN GOSLING’s writing/directing/producing debut, LOST RIVER [3], is at Eden Court (from 12 JUN). For fans of Dr Who (MATT SMITH) and David Lynch (coz it’s a bit strange, yay). Also starring CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, IAIN DE CAESTECKER, SAOIRSE RONAN and EVA MENDES it is mildly disconcerting and described as ‘fantasy-neo-noir’. Slightly less off the wall will be SLOW WEST [4] - a visually stunning western with MICHAEL FASSBENDER serving as bodyguard to a teen (Aussie) Scot in 1800’s Colorado (Vue 26 Jun), and MR HOLMES (Vue 19 Jun) in which a young usurper called IAN MCKELLEN steals Benny’s Sherlock role – albeit an aged, deteriorating one. The very cheek! Music from the incomparable Carter Burwell.

More off-piste material will come in the varied non-uniform shapes of LONDON ROAD [5] (EC from 09, Vue from 12 Jun) in which the awesomely talented TOM HARDY joins the equally so OLIVIA COLMAN in a musical recounting the effect of the 2006 prostitute murders on an Ipswich street (!); THE NEW GIRLFRIEND [Une Nouvelle Ami] with the brilliantly watchable ROMAIN DURIS (EC 26 Jun); Peter Bogdanovich’s SHE’S FUNNY THAT WAY [6] (Vue 26 Jun) with IMOGEN POOTS as a hooker turned Broadway thespian getting into scrapes with OWEN WILSON, KATHRYN HAHN, RHYS IFAN and JENNIFER ANISTON - not to mention cameos from the likes of Tatum O’Neal, Quentin Tarantino and Michael Shannon; Jon Stewart(The Daily Show)’s drama based on real events, ROSEWATER (EC 06 Jun); the sublimely titled Swedish comedy drama A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE (EC 19 Jun) the fi nal part of Roy Andersson’s existential trilogy; CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA (EC 15 Jun) which boasts JULIETTE BINOCHE and an award-winning KRISTEN STEWART; Trouble and talent are often bedfellows and two documentaries proving that are HEAVEN ADORES YOU [7] (EC 08/11 Jun), Nickolas Dylan Rossi’s fi lm about the magical musician ELLIOTT SMITH, complete with unheard tracks and interviews, etc; and GASCOIGNE – about the mercurial midfi eld genius. The latter is due for a one day release before coming out on DVD. Check online to confi rm - publicity says 08 Jun, Vue info is for 12 Jun…

Finally, Eden Court have a Marx Brothers season running from 02–28 Jun - check centre pages for more, and their Cult Cinema titles this month are CASINO (14 Jun) and PULP FICTION (25 Jun) - again with the fi lm/pizza/beer combo on offer. Phew.

SUN 14 JUN THE EDIBLES @ Eden Court, 3pm. A tempting tale of comedy mayhem set in a cake shop. Three bakers are busy making a specially ordered cake. But when a hungry mouse sneaks in, their plans go out of the window along with their cakes! The Edibles is a show full of magical ingredients, especially created for 3-7 year olds and children with additional support needs. Mix together original songs, physical comedy and loveable puppets and young audiences are in for a tasty treat. Produced by Platform and supported by Creative Scotland.

SAT 20 JUN “MAGICAL ADVENTURES” @ Eden Court, 11am. Introducing the cutest cast you’ll ever see - the Dinkys and Minis of TFX Performing Arts Academy. Over 60 of their youngest members are ready to take you on a Magical Adventure. Together you’ll travel through Candyland Land and even the Circus! FRI 26 JUN DR SEUSS’S THE CAT IN THE HAT@ EC, 4pm From the moment his tall, red-and-white-striped hat appears around the door, Sally and her brother know that the cat in the hat is the funniest, most mischievous cat they have ever met. With the trickiest of tricks and craziest of ideas, he turns a rainy afternoon into an amazing adventure. But what will mum find when she gets home?

Based on the much-loved book by Dr Seuss. Originally produced by the National Theatre.

SAT 27 JUN CAT IN THE HAT @ EC 10am, 1.30pm As Fri 26 Jun.

SUN 28 JUN CAT IN THE HAT @ EC 11.30am, 2.30pm As Fri 26

Who Let The Cat In?There’s something irresistibly brash about the creations of Dr Seuss, a candystripe colourfulness bursting with life and turning what’s ostensibly an aid for early reading into a hilariously unhinged alternative reality. No wonder the books and attendant spin-offs are as popular with adults as with kids. While Jim Carrey pretty much nailed The Grinch on the big screen, one of the most successful stage versions of a Seuss book came from the National Theatre and their take on THE CAT IN THE HAT. A version of that show is coming to EDEN COURT EMPIRE from 26–28 JUN and we’re fully expecting it to be packed full of high jinx and rip-roaring mischief as the titular cat entertains Sally and her brother while their mother is away, turning a rainy afternoon into an adventure.

More comedy mayhem for your delectation comes in THE EDIBLES (EDEN COURT ONETOUCH, 14 & 15 JUN) as the creators of Little Ulla and The Pokey Hat return with a new show, set this time in a cake shop. A hungry mouse (aren’t they all?) throws baking plans into disarray in this production aimed at 3-7 year olds and children with additional support needs. Songs, puppetry and physical comedy combine in an experience that’s been lauded by critics and audiences alike.

A word too for the TFX PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY who are coming to EDEN COURT on 20 JUN with THIS IS THE MOMENT. Over 200 of the Highlands’ most talented youngsters will be singing, dancing and quite possibly throwing in some jazz hands in an ebullient celebration of musical theatre. Earlier the same day, at 11am, 60 of the academy’s youngest members will be putting on TFX–MAGICAL ADVENTURES, a fantastical story that even takes you to the circus…

World Of Sound

MUSIC

If you’re after a bit of music this month then you’re spoiled for choice, particularly on 10 & 11 JUN when XPO NORTH hits town with over 60 acts playing in various Inverness venues*. More about that on P29, but those performances aside, there are still plenty of acts worth seeing this month. One being JOHN COOPER CLARKE [1] at IRONWORKS on 07 JUN (rescheduled from April). Ever since the punk days he’s been continuing the purest of poetic traditions that stretches back to balladeers from days of yore, wittily incisive commentaries on life, love and humanity. The coolest, gangliest national treasure we have…

WOODENBOX [2] used to play up here all the time, but have retreated from the limelight for a bit, only recently re-emerging with a new album, ‘Foreign Organ’ that suggests they’ve defi nitely got their mojo back. As they’ll readily prove when they play MAD HATTERS on 06 JUN.

Lots more rising stars on show at the fi rst MUSIC FARM festival at THE LOFT near FORRES on 27 JUN, an impressively varied line-up including the excellent HECTOR BIZERK [3], VLADIMIR, LIONEL [4] and CATHOLIC ACTION. Don’t miss.

It’s not all about rock this month though, with other genres well represented. The excellent MAHLER PLAYERS [5], for example, who bring the fourth instalment of their MAHLER IN MINIATURE project to EDEN COURT on 25 JUN. As well as two of that composer’s song cycles their performance also includes Britten’s Sinfonietta and Pärt’s hypnotising Fratres, famous for its use in the fi lm There Will Be Blood. Ace.

Music from around the world starts right at home with EDDI READER [6] at EDEN COURT on 21 JUN in a night called Alba: Songs Of Scotland, then nipping over to Ireland courtesy of THE KILKENNYS [7] (EC, 17 JUN) before moving to the continent with the always excellent BUDAPEST CAFÉ ORCHESTRA (EC, 10 JUN) who, despite calling their show The Gaelic Chronicles, will undoubtedly bring on board their love of Balkan sounds. Again at EDEN COURT, on 18 JUN, CHRISTINE BOVILL’S [8] PIAF sees the acclaimed songwriter threading her own remarkable journey in the world of French song with the life and works of Edith Piaf.

A big cheer for one of the return of one of the city’s most enduring events, RANALD SMITH & IAIN MACGILLIVRAY’S MIDSUMMER GIG. Back this year on 20 JUN at their usual venue, BEAUFORT HOTEL, they’re going to celebrate their 40th anniversary by mixing some new songs along with some old favourites.

*Finally, IG:LU makes another foray as a live music venue with a mega 4-band line-up during XPO North - the REPEATER XPONORTH PARTY. On WED 10 JUN from 11pm you can get down to the awesome line of WOMPS [9] (formerly Algernon Doll, recently recorded by legend Steve Albini), MANUSCRIPTS, THE POOR THINGS and GREAT COP. Ltd places! Think you haven’t heard of XPO NORTH, which takes place in Inverness on 10 & 11 JUN? Well actually you have, just under its old name of GoNorth. It’s been rebranded as such things are, while building on its reputation as a rallying point for creative folk of all stripes. In its old incarnation it rotated between Scottish cities, but since being based permanently in Inverness each year it’s given itself a solid foundation on which to build an ever-growing reputation as an event that not only showcases new talent, but, just as importantly, opens up proceedings to everyone who lives here. A quick, free registration and you can go to every single event.

There were a record number of submissions this year by bands wanting to showcase their talents and sixty of them have been chosen to do just that, with Scots rising stars such as HECTOR BIZERK, WOMPS* and CATHOLIC ACTION are in action, as well as more far-fl ung treats in the form of Sweden’s THE BONGO CLUB, Holland’s YUKO YUKO and the marvellously named ICE IN MY EYES from Luxembourg. Take a constitutional around town and just drop in on random appearances. We guarantee you’ll stumble across something special.

But even the best of those will struggle to top our best local acts appearing – SPRING BREAK, GARDEN OF ELKS, LIONEL, SCHNARFF SCHNARFF, who’s frontmen adorn our front cover and all of whom have excellent releases out at the moment (see opposite) and could be on the verge of very exciting things. With Caithness’ Neon Waltz having signed to Atlantic and Inverness hip-hop talent Sherbit about to release a great album, there has never been so much strength in depth to the Highland bands scene. Awesome.

By day, XpoNorth hosts a packed programme of more than 25 panels and workshops featuring leading industry players in the fi elds of fashion & craft, publishing, screen & broadcast and music. This year, the screen and broadcast element is being boosted by the presence of THE SCREEN MACHINE, (the 80-seat, air conditioned mobile cinema more usually found in far-fl ung corners of the Highlands) in Falcon Square for the duration of XpoNorth which will provide a unique viewing point for festival delegates to watch featured fi lms. Of the selected fi lms, 78 will be shown there, while 26 will screen as part of the conference programme. To top off this feast of fi lm, festival director AMANDA MILLEN is introducing The Golden Hour to XpoNorth audiences. Named after cinematographers’ favourite time of the day, the hour just after sunrise or before sunset when the light is softer, XpoNorth will present a selection of Millen’s top picks from partner fi lm festivals.

Don’t be shy, get out and get involved - there’s a great atmosphere and it’s great fun. For more, see the offi cial site at xponorth.co.uk

SAT 04 JUL RUN FOR COLOUR @ Bught Park S ponsored 5K with a difference. highlandhospice.

Having been caught again recently in one of those embarrassing ‘street dances’ with a complete stranger .. when, approaching from opposite directions, we both wanted to use the same small section of pavement at the same time. I’ve been putting some thought into the issue and think I’ve come up with a solution. So here is my guide to ending the misery of the impromptu dance-off:- We’ve all at some point faced the situation when through, it seems, no fault of our own we fi nd our path about to be blocked by another pedestrian walking towards us. Immediately you see the situation developing you shy left .. trouble is so does the other guy .. so you try for a parry to the right .. but they do too, all the time the gap between you and this miscreant who has the audacity to be using your pavement narrows .. until the inevitable face-to-face apology and one of you stopping whilst the other walks round. It’s the other guy’s fault of course. Wrong! But neither is it yours - it’s the fault of our brains .. not the conscious part of our brains .. not the conscious part brain sees them as a potential mate brain sees them as a potential mate

(or possibly food, it’s not my place to question your subconscious motives) .. So, for as long as you continue to look at this person the reptile in you will guide you irrevocably toward them (as will their’s towards you). It is very diffi cult to focus on a point and then deliberately walk away a point and then deliberately walk away from it! Try it for yourself, though not when you’re driving - that would be silly and dangerous not to mention dangerously dangerous not to mention dangerously dangerous not to mention dangerously silly. While it might seem sensible to keep an eye on the person you are trying to avoid my hypothesis is that that’s entirely the wrong thing to do - I say treat every other wrong thing to do - I say treat every other pedestrian as a lion. Thus to avoid the left-right-left street-spar you must turn away right-left street-spar you must turn away from your sparring partner immediately you sense the situation developing .. focus on a random piece of street furniture and walk

Remembering, of course, to walk round it as falling over a bollard is possibly it as falling over a bollard is possibly it as falling over a bollard is possibly it as falling over a bollard is possibly more embarrassing than bumping into a random stranger who, who knows, might

SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

All Downhill From Here. All Downhill From Here.So the football’s over for a few weeks, or at least until ICT play the fi rst European match in their history around the beginning of July, the start of a process that will surely conclude with them lifting the Europa League trophy in May 2016. Put the kids’ college fund on it. Congratulations to John Hughes and the team from all here at ICA on a season that exceeded all expectations and let’s hope that results in increased attendances next season.

Football might not attract as many folk as it would like up here, but the WORLD MOUNTAIN BIKE CHAMPIONSHIPS have no such problems. The event which takes place on 06 & 07 JUN at the Nevis Range Ski Area, 10km from Fort William, the spiritual home for all the British riders on the World Cup tour brings competitors and spectators from all over the world. It’s the one they all want to win, a home result in front of a passionate crowd-think Andy Murray at Wimbledon, but with bikes. Every single rider is there to do battle with the mountain and the clock. Gravity hauls them down the 2.7km long track and the riders use their skill (and nerve) to choose the best line, shaving fractions of a second from their time. Over the two days there’s an almost constant stream of races, but also lots of other entertainment to keep you occupied. This year there’ll even be a visit from DANNY MACASKILL and his Drop & Roll display team and amazing acrobatic fl ying from the Red Bull Matadors, just in case you haven’t had quite enough thrills.

Rather more sedate is golf’s SCOTTISH HYDRO CHALLENGE at the Spey Valley Golf Club at Macdonald Aviemore Resort from 25-28 JUN, at which young Scottish players are given the opportunity to pit their wits against a strong international fi eld in a tournament which consistently attracts some of the biggest crowds of the Challenge Tour season. The Scottish Hydro Challenge also hosts numerous initiatives aimed at inspiring young Scottish golfers, with Clubgolf clinics taking place during the week for children from all over the Highlands.

THEATRETV Stars Come To Town.

DANCECOMEDYCABARET DRAMA MUSICAL

CABARET > COMEDY > DANCE > DRAMA > MUSICALS > MORE > 35

To look at the posters for YER GRANNY [1] you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s some sort of Mrs Brown’s Boys type affair, a prospect that would usually have us running for the hills. In fact the show, which comes to EDEN COURT from 09-13 JUN, is originally based on an Argentinian play, La Nona by Roberto Cossa, written during a time of brutal repression and death squads. The story, relocated to Scotland, of a 100-year old woman eating her family out of house and home has an ace cast led by GREGOR FISHER in the title role making a long-awaited return to the stage, with support from Casualty’s MAUREEN BEATTIE and Only An Excuse’s JONATHAN WATSON.

More TV stars in THE GHOST TRAIN [2] at EDEN COURT from 22–24 JUN. The comedy ensemble piece about spooky tale-telling in an isolated railway station features JEFFREY HOLLAND from Hi De Hi alongside CORRINNE WICKS from Doctors, TOM BUTCHER from The Bill, SOPHIE POWLES from Emmerdale, JUDY BUXTON from General Hospital and DAVID JANSON from ‘Allo ‘Allo. That should keep the autograph hunters happy.

Elsewhere in this issue, one name that keeps on cropping up is that of HECTOR BIZERK. The Scots hip-hop combo are playing live in Forres, appearing at XpoNorth and also soundtrack CRAZY JANE [3] which comes to EDEN COURT on 04 JUN. Written by Nicola McCartney it’s an extraordinary piece of dance theatre looking at the dark underbelly of Paris’ Belle Epoque and tracing the story of Jane Avril, a real-life dancer at the Moulin Rouge whose path to being pictured in all those Toulouse Lautrec paintings also involved time in brothels and mental asylums. Quite possibly unmissable.

REGINALD D HUNTER [4] made one of the TV shows of the year recently with his wonderful Songs Of The South, looking at music in his native Deep South of America. Now he’s back doing the stand-up that’s made him famous, delivered with his usual disregard for wussy reticence. Powerful, if rarely comfortable. And you get the feeling that’s exactly what he intends.

Mike Maran’s latest production, RHAPSODY IN GREEN [5] (EC, 13 JUN), based on the life and writings of the great Scottish naturalist, John Muir, is a declaration of love for the wilderness. Directed by Patrick Sandford, Maran takes his audience into the Alaskan interior sometime shortly after the death of Muir in 1914, playing his close friend, Rev Samuel Hall Young who is on retreat in the Alaskan wilderness. There, beside his wigwam, sledge and team of huskies he remembers his friend, and in particular how Muir once saved his life.

Finally, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM is at FLORIANS THEATRE from 10-13 JUN. A play that’s performed more than any other round this time of the year but, as the past 400 years have proved, one that never loses its charm.

Making The Most Of You: healthVote Green.Making those superfoods more palatable. . .We know how it is; you care about your health, want to eat well, and probably don’t have too much trouble with a bit of fresh fruit and perhaps some basic vegetables. But just the mention of wheatgrass or kale, etc makes your tastebuds cringe and you falter.

And that’s understandable ‒ the former might posses a beautiful hue, but it can be to very few people’s tastes (unless you like the taste of wallpaper paste); the latter isn’t quite so alien but is sinewy and tough and tastes like concentrated cabbage. Ugh.

So here are a few rather diff erent ideas for ways to include some of these ‘mean greens’ in your healthy culinary life...

Kale: If rabbits manage it, why can’t we? Well, look at their teeth for one - and they don’t got no Cadburys to turn to either, do they. But never fear - this is a weird one but it has to be worth you trying it at least once. Get yourself some kale (buy it washed - really who wants to bother with all that shizz?) and spread it out on a plate or in a bowl and add a little seasoning (optional). Then stick it in the microwave for a few minutes (we have a 1000W and do 4 mins, less W = more mins). So you’d be expecting hot, limp leaves to emerge, right? Wrong. You get kale crisps. Like we said, weird. But strangely good. Yeah, you can bake them to same eff ect - but. . .

Avocado: This is a fi fty-fi fty food - half of you will like it already, half will defi nitely not. Nearly everyone will be using it as a savoury food - in guacamole (which you might want to try making with edamame beans instead) or with tomatoes on toast etc (yyyyum). But you haters might think again if you check out some sweet options ‒ in muffi ns, mousse or key lime pie. Really! Basically you’re replacing the fat with avocado fl esh. A whole other world... Recipes on Google, obv.

Wheatgrass: Everyone knows this is the super-food of the richly famous ‒ and likewise everyone knows it tastes boggin’. Most ‘sneaky’ uses involve mixing it into sweet smoothies and masking the taste with fruits and bananas ‒ but we reckon it is way more eff ective to chuck some (powder, fresh ‒ whatever) into an omelette. The taste literally disappears amongst your savoury palette. Wheatgrass = defeated. Yay. (Soup too, btw.)

French Beans: You know they’re good for you ‒ and we won’t pretend they can’t taste great simply steamed as part of a plateful, but try throwing a handful of the critters on a baking tray and sprinkling with a little salt, parmesan or any seasoning before baking for 15 mins or so. You got chips. Healthy chips. Nomnomnom...

Here at EILERTSEN DENTAL CARE, we oer a range of treatments that may enhance your smile whether it is changing your silver llings to white ones or a course of whitening. We are trained in facial aesthetics and oer botox and ller treatments that will reduce the appearance of ne lines and wrinkles.

One of our most popular treatments is SIX MONTH SMILES. This is a revolutionary new treatment that helps to improve the position of your teeth if they are misaligned. The treatment involves having clear brackets with discrete white wires placed on your teeth. The brace will gently alter the position of the teeth to a more aesthetic position.

If your teeth are crooked, twisted, spaced, worn down in unusual places or if you have had braces in the past and your teeth have relapsed leaving you unhappy with your smile then Six month smiles could be just the option for you.

OPPOSITE are examples of before and after images for 3 separate patients to give you an idea of what is possible >>>

SIX MONTH SMILES uses new technology to provide a simple and very eective solution to give you a straight, healthy and beautiful smile without having to remove healthy teeth or wear braces for several years.

SOME ADVANTAGES INCLUDE:• Average treatment time is 6 months• Clear brackets & wires are barely visible• Specialist Six Month Smiles patient tray kits make appointment times short & comfortable. • Low forces are involved meaning treatment is more comfortable & your teeth are kept healthy.• Short overall treatment time means hygiene can be maintained more easily.• Less expensive than conventional orthodontic treatment.

Ed’s Easy DinerEastgate Centre, Inverness 01463 231678 (no reservations)

There is a love that dare not speak its name. It is the most delicate and specifi c of intimate relationships and can never be acknowledged. It’s all resolutely averted gazes with only the merest shoe-ward glance indulged in. Eyes must never be locked for fear of the passions that might be unleashed.

We talk of you, our dear food groupies (‘foopies’ as you’re now known within these chambers), that devoted clan who avidly consume our monthly review and then book a table at the same establishment, with little mind for the merits of the review. We can never speak – but you must know we know and we love you dearly for it.

And it is to those dearest followers we must extend a gentle apology this month. Ordinarily, you’re safe in our hands – in so far as following our mark will at least land you in the safe and familiar confi nes of something resembling a restaurant, hotel or café. But this day we are sat in the middle of a shopping centre. The Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness.

Oh – is there a nice little bistro tucked

away in a cosy corner, a haven of calm amidst the carping clatter of capitalism? Nope.

This is a hard, bright, shiny and open-to-the-world (of shoppers) fooderie – Ed’s Easy Diner – all millenials-aimed fi fties jukebox kitsch and noise. There is, of course, a story of how it is we’ve ended up here for review, but it is a long one and will form the basis for my second book (if I’m not thrown in the Tower for the anti-establishment outrages of the fi rst). Suffi ce to say, it wasn’t entirely planned this way – and to further befuddle the formula, my customary carniverous dining partner has emergencied themselves out of it (I told you about the baby) and so we sit, two (whisper it) vegetarians, in a world of meaty burgers and lush, salty hot dogs. Oops.

We start out placed right at the front on a compact ‘table’ for two which makes us feel a little squeezed against the wall with no room to swing the cat we have in the bag. It would, it must be said, quite suit a couple of slouchy teenagers, but we’re old and cold and settled in our ways. We order anyway,

musing about the existential fractals of eating food whilst the thronging shoppers avidly feed Mammon, before it occurs to us (duh) to ask if there’s a four-seater we could sneak into. The request was charmingly obliged by one of the (very) many pleasant staff and we settled down towards the rear - a little quieter as it happens, and with room to let that cat out.

I say quieter, and it is, but I do notice that the fi fties theme is, as expected, followed through with mini jukeboxes on some tables and a background soundtrack of the era. The problem is that you largely struggle to hear the sounds of the music over the general hubbub. Far be it from me - oh, heck, I will - why can’t they have speakers all round the place, making the sound more effective at low volume? Hmmm? Anyway - it didn’t massively put us out, but I had hoped to be feeling like I was in an episode of Happy Days (if in doubt, ask your elders) with Ritchie, Potsie, Ralph, Joanie and Chachi spread across the neighbouring booth hanging on every word of The Fonz’s latest 4141

pearls of wisdom. And whilst you can get so far with period-styled interiors, menus and music, re-creating the fresh-faced enthusiasm of fi fties teens as presented by a seventies TV show might have been asking a bit much. Sigh.

That menu seems large, well laid out and comprehensive. You could take it as simple choices between burgers and hot-dogs, shakes and sodas, cold and warm desserts; but if I tell you there’s eight different types of fries (including Chilli Cheese Fries, Sweet Potato Fries and Atomic American Fries with jalapeño jelly, chilli, sour cream, cheddar cheese sauce and guacamole on the side), let alone at least a dozen different burger types – and that’s before you decide on what type of cheese you want on that – you’ll see it is actually quite extensive.

Obviously, as veggies, our choices are more limited, which is something of a relief to someone of my indecisive disposition. So, to fi nd out about the dripping delights of the Big Bubba’s Bacon ‘n’ Cheese with its fresh-never-frozen ‘farm assured’ beef burger (ie, it’s not horse) and smoke-cured bacon, or the De-Luxe Pulled Pork Dog, you will have to venture here yourselves.

But the basic principal is the same: a generously sized toasted sesame seed bun with some obligatory salad and pickles sandwiching a large patty topped (in some cases) with a choice of cheeses. We opted for the Cajun Vegetable Burger and the Chickpea and Quinoa Burger. Ooh, hark at us, quinoa! These were both good sized, with the former offering a good bite, range of texture and decent level of spice, the latter was a little less consolidated and also a bit less richly seasoned. We had ordered the ‘plate’ version rather than ‘solo’ - meaning they came with Coleslaw, Onion Rings and Fries. The rings were spectacular - über-thickly coated and crisp - a real mouthful though perhaps not much of onion. The ‘slaw was a bit unremarkable whilst the fries were in fact chips. At least to my way of thinking - fries means French fries, ie those of the super-skinny variety you get in fast-food joints. It is probably a good thing - French fries have a greater surface-area-to-potato ratio, making

them less healthy, if you measure such things. These chips (like home-made fi nger-size rough cut ones) were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside – quite to my partner’s taste.

Going back in time, we also ordered some Kracklecorn Popcorn pre-meal to see what that was about (warm, sweet-savoury popcorn as it turns out) plus a couple of Ed’s World Famous Extra Thick Milkshakes; of the Vanilla and the Banana & Peanut Butter variety. These were ace - good fl avours and nicely thick, whilst not requiring of giant lungs to be able to move it up the straw (you know who you are) - and they come served in your own jug which you will derive 2+ glasses from.

Desserts were the Say Cheese slow-baked New York-style cheesecake - which disappointed a bit, quite powdery with a wet base that made for a slightly slammy experience - and the fairly magnifi cent Kit-Kat Choco-Lat Sundae, featuring vanilla ice-cream, chocolate sauce and large Kit-Kat chunks topped with whipped cream and a full fi nger. Yup.

We’ve studiously avoided so far talking about price, so as not to prejudice your reading until this point. This food is expensive. You could understand that this is a premium, expensive location. You could also argue that it’s not really intended as a 3-course lunch menu - more a one thing or the other idea. But truly, to pay as much for two courses and a couple of shakes as you would on an evening meal in a mid-range restaurant (~£11 main meal) is eye-opening.

So that cat’s now fi nally out of the bag. Mammon, it seems, must be fed.

Price for 2: £34.85 (exc. shakes, £9.10)

When it comes to finding homes for sale in Scotland, there’s a new kid on the block. New property websites come along all the time, but this one already has over 11,000 homes for sale across the country – most of which are not on other portals – and there are several hundred new additions every week as new homes come on to the market. Moreover, there are handy new reports on the market in key areas.

The site www.spcscotland.co.uk brings together properties for sale through the great majority of Solicitors Property Centres (SPC) in

Scotland; including HSPC. Since most solicitor estate agents rely on their local SPC to advertise the properties they are selling, a significant number of these homes for sale won’t be found on UK wide portals – although you will find them on the relevant SPC site.

Now, as we all know, most properties are bought by people living close to the home they purchase and these buyers are likely to use their local SPC to find homes for sale. But, for anyone planning to move further afield, the SPC Scotland site makes it easy to find homes that

are not on other portals and helps buyers to identify the SPCs that are most relevant to them.

The site also has a handy new tool which allows users to track price changes since 2003 for every local authority area in Scotland. Here’s an example:

The new site includes graphs showing changes in price and sale volumes for every local authority area in Scotland from 2003 onwards.

This data sits side by side with the latest reports from the relevant SPC to give a unique insight in to the state of the market in that area.

And if you are selling, it’s good to know that the site also provides valuable additional advertising for your home – as long, of course, as you choose an SPC member to sell your home.

In fact, the SPC Scotland site has existed in one form or another for many years. But this is the first time it has brought together so many homes for sale from so many SPCs and so much information on market conditions. It could be the start of something big.
