Two score and to score…And so it came to pass, a mere 20 years after the (painful-for-some) merger of Caledonian FC and Inverness Thistle, our Highland capital team have made it to their fi rst major cup climax - the Scottish League Cup Final - to be contested, appropriately enough with the once ‘biggest team in the north’ Aberdeen. The fact that it follows warm on the heels of neighbours Ross County’s SFA Cup fi nal appearance of 2010 only serves to show that the Highlands might just be paving the way for Scottish football’s future. Success on a budget - the Highland way - and one many of the game’s rather richer central belt clubs could learn a lot from. So there are many reasons to get interested, get behind your local team and watch them bring home the bacon. If not this year, no matter - it will only be a matter of time… We look forward to local youngsters deciding between ICT or County rather than Rangers or Celtic as seems to have been the norm for too long now. See p28. It was also 20 years ago the Spice Girls formed - and this month, if you dare, you can see ‘Motherland’* (p31/45) - a stunning and challenging piece of theatre, live music and dance from Vincent Dance Theatre that asks what exactly is it that we “really, really want” and confronts modern female life with its “airbrushed beauty, boob jobs and Botox, victim blaming, slut shaming, the might of motherhood and the challenge of childlessness”. Some things take longer to change than others, then… March it is and march we will - right on with a taster of the sort of things we have in store for you this month: | ART: Don’t forget the craft: If you believe words like haberdashery and smocking aren’t just made up then the 5th Dornoch Fibre Fest might just be for you; IMAG have a sound & fi lm installation, Mirror Lands, and, erm, Sexy Peat. | FILM: Our beloved Tilda Swinton appears in three fi lms this month, Tom Hiddleston and Scarlett Johansson two; don’t-miss fi lms from Wes Anderson and Terry Gilliam; Capt America returns as do The Muppets… | KIDS: Variety: Ski Champs, Festival of One Act Plays, The Gingerbread Man. | MUSIC: There’s a folk bonanza at Eden Court with Emily Smith, Blazin’ Fiddles, The Revelers and Southern Tenant Folk Union. | SPECIALS: High spirits: the Inverness Whisky Festival plus the Moray Game Jam. | SPORT: Local heroes: not only will ICT vie for silverware, but stacks of YOU will be running for charity in the excellent Inverness Half Marathon, 5K & Fun Run. | THEATRE: A month of contrasting pairs - from Jason Manford to Jerry Sadowitz, Brendan Cole to the aforementioned (crazy) Motherland show and more…WHEN you’ve fi nished tidying your room - and only then, you can visit: whatsonhighlands.com

In this relentlessly digital age it’s good to see that some of the old ways aren’t being allowed to die out. Crafting, for example, is enjoying something of a resurgence and while, Down South, the hipsters of East London are using it to crochet covers for their penny-farthings, up here it’s being celebrated rather more coherently in the form of the DORNOCH FIBRE FEST from FRI 14-SUN 16 MAR. This is actually the fi fth time the event has been held and this time round there’s an even wider range of tutors and masterclasses including: Special quilting techniques taught by SHEENA NORQUAY; tapestry weaving by JOAN BAXTER; “upcycling” - recreating new fashion from pre-loved clothing, with SHEILA KENNARD & LUCY WILLIAMS in two half-day workshops and a class on revitalising your knitwear from JULIE BISHOP. The HIGHLAND QUILTERS will be holding a special exhibition of their work in the Dornoch West Church Hall where members will be on hand to chat about their quilts and demonstrate techniques in patchwork design and quilting. Demonstrations in the main hall will include batik printing, peg loom weaving, frame knitting, kumihimo (a sort of braiding), and a chance to try your hand at spinning and weaving with the Highland Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. Drop-in classes will show you how to make colourful pom-pom earrings, to master basic embroidery stitches and to decorate a tote bag using appliqué, buttons, paints and transfers. There will be a knitters corner in the coffee lounge on Saturday, so bring along your unfinished work or head down and learn a new skill. The weekend will start on Friday evening with a talk at the West Church Hall by Joan Baxter, from 6:30 pm. On Friday, students from Dornoch Academy will come to the Fibre Fest for their own classes in upcycling and recycled design, and their work will be on display. The whole of Dornoch will be involved, and in shops throughout the town there will be a window-spotting competition, as well as the Fibre Fest award for the Best Cushion. Which is actually rather more prestigious than you might imagine. fibrefest.org.uk…

We always let loose a little yelp of excitement at the prospect of a new fl ick featuring Nairn’s most famous Oscar winner, TILDA SWINTON. And she’s back in not one, not two, but three new releases this month. ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE [1] fi nds her playing a vampire, a role that surely she’s always been kind of destined for with that porcelain complexion and all, alongside TOM HIDDLESTON, written and directed by the mighty JIM JARMUSCH. And it’s set in Detroit. What’s not to like?

She’s also to be found (alongside CHRISTOPH WALTZ, MATT DAMON and DAVID THEWLIS) in THE ZERO THEOREM [2], the latest from another cherishably maverick director, in this case Terry Gilliam. In recent years his output has never quite matched the scale of his ambition or (as in the case of his Don Quixote adaptation) just been dogged by bad luck, but this story of a computer genius looking for the meaning of life might be his biggest success for a while. He’s saying it’s the fi nal part of a dystopian satire trilogy begun with 1985’s Brazil and continued with 12 Monkeys a decade later.

Tilda’s fi nal outing is in GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL [3], the latest from Wes Anderson and also starring RALPH FIENNES, EDWARD NORTON and BILL MURRAY. A quirky comedy set in the titular hotel and revolving around a mysterious death and the struggle for a valuable painting. An unmissably object lesson in elegantly assured acting apparently.

Nothing restrained about CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER or MUPPETS MOST WANTED (starring the aforementioned Tom Hiddleston in his second movie this month), but they’re bound to be popular among their clearly defi ned constituencies. And fans of the WAR HORSE movie will want to check out the cinema screenings of the original National Theatre stage version showing as the latest in the NT ENCORE season at EDEN COURT on 16, 25 & 26 MAR.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON not only reprises her Black Widow role in Captain America, but also stars in the Scottish-based UNDER THE SKIN, a fi lm that was shot up here (from Glasgow to Glencoe) yonks ago and looked like it might never actually get fi nished. Critical response so far suggests the wait was worth it, Johansson’s portrayal of a sexy alien serial killer (aren’t they all?) just one of the pleasures in an inventively dreamlike affair. Not sure it’ll do too much for tourism in the Highlands though.

One actor we always have time for is AARON PAUL, whose portrayal of Jesse in Breaking Bad has given him some sort of small-screen immortality. He stars in A LONG WAY DOWN, adapted from the novel by Nick Hornby about four people meeting up on New Year’s Eve “to help one another weather the diffi culties of their lives.” Sounds horrifi c and surely Paul (and co-star, another ICA fave, IMOGEN POOTS) are destined for better things. By which we mean better than NEED FOR SPEED (on at VUE from 12 MAR).

“Imagine a world made entirely of biscuits”. We do. Often. And that’s the pretext for THE GINGERBREAD MAN at UNIVERSAL HALL, FINDHORN on SAT 05 APR at 2pm. Presented by Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre, it’s an engaging theatrical production for the younger child. Into the aforementioned biscuit world comes a Gingerbread Man, creating havoc wherever he goes. He meets a majestic cow, a stubborn goat and an opportunistic bird. But… can the Gingerbread Man outwit the dastardly Fox? With a foot tapping ‘Yummy Chase’ soundtrack – reminiscent of an old movie – and minimal language this has proved to be a tremendously popular story with younger audiences wherever it’s been, so should be a treat.

Drama for a slightly older audience with the FESTIVAL OF ONE ACT PLAYS at DINGWALL ACADEMY on MON 03 MAR. Presented by the Scottish Community Drama Association, which has been going since way back in 1926, it brings together the best young acting and production talent from the organisation, giving participants a chance to meet like-minded souls. Stars of the future should be very much in evidence.Future stars of a very different kind might be found at the SCOTTISH CHILDREN’S SKI CHAMPS on CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN on SAT 08 & SUN 09 MAR. The Winter Olympics proved that Britain is just as capable as anyone else of inspiring and encouraging prospective winners, so hopefully that impetus will continue. DR FEELGOOD: What I’ve Been Listening To…Ironworks, Fri 14 Mar

Few bands in British music have been as infl uential as DR FEELGOOD. Forming in 1971, they rightly surmised that the wastes of their native Canvey Island weren’t so spiritually distant from the American Delta where all the blues music they loved was being made. And so they crafted their own version, marshalled by the twin forces of nature LEE BRILLEAUX and WILKO JOHNSON. The result was a gloriously dirty sound, dubbed “pub rock” and acting as perhaps the most important infl uence on punk and all that followed.

These days the line-up is much changed, with Brilleaux dead, Johnson terminally ill and the other two founders John B.Sparks and John Martin no longer involved. If you want to see just why that incarnation was so life-affi rming, you’d be well-advised to check out Julien Temple’s marvellous “Oil City Confi dential” documentary, but if you’d rather just hear all the great old tunes played by the current Feelgooders, head to IRONWORKS for their gig on FRI 14 MAR.

Meanwhile we asked the band’s KEVIN MORRIS to tell us the tunes that he loves the most. Here’s what he said >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

And you can listen to them by visiting here >>>>>

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE:‘I Sat By The Ocean’It’s from “... Like Clockwork”, their album from last year. Josh Homme returned to work after a close encounter on the operating table and produced their best album yet. Great slide guitar riff.

The Who: ’The Seeker’One of Pete Townshend’s best songs, often overlooked.

Miles Davis: ‘Mademoiselle Mabry’Miles had been listening to Jimi Hendrix and composed this for drummer Tony Williams to shine, based on the simple three note riff of JH’s tune The Wind Cries Mary.

Donny Hathaway:’Voices Inside’ (live version)Subtle work out for a sensational band. Check out Willie Weeks on bass!

Muddy Waters: ‘I Want To Be Loved’The version from the Hard Again album. Muddy re-recorded some of his fi nest songs with Johnny Winter and his band. All the tunes really rock!

Folk ThisDespite the fact that the fi lm Inside Llewyn Davis appears to have given the Highlands a miss, the appetite for all things folky up here doesn’t need any zeitgeisty topping-up as demonstrated by the plethora of acts immersed in that genre who are playing this month.

And EDEN COURT is the place to go to catch the best of it all, with a fi stful of acts showing the scope and quality of folk being made today. First up multi-award winner and leading light on the Scottish scene EMILY SMITH [1] on THU 06 Mar. She’s worked with an array of artists from the folk scene and beyond including Richard Thompson, Jerry Douglas, Eddi Reader and Beth Nielsen Chapman as well as singing on the sell-out Transatlantic Sessions tour last year alongside Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eric Bibb and Teddy Thompson.

A little more informal is CEILIDH HOUSE on FRI 07 MAR, the annual showcase for the GAELIC SOCIETY OF INVERNESS. Singers ARTHUR CORMACK, SINEAG MACINTYRE, IAIN MACKAY, KIRSTEEN MACDONALD and ALEX MACDONALD, as well as piper D.J. MACINTYRE and new band MARLOCH.

Highland favourites BLAZIN’ FIDDLES [2], who play on FRI 14 MAR are regulars, but this marks the fi rst gig with their new line-up, only founder BRUCE MACGREGOR remaining from the original incarnation. Should be good.

And it’s not just British folk. THE REVELERS, who play on SUN 16 MAR formed when founding members of two of the mightiest forces in American roots music The Red Stick Ramblers and The Pine Leaf Boys joined forces. They’re the undisputed stars of Cajun, so expect a suitable bayou atmosphere to proceedings.

Despite their name, SOUTHERN TENANT FOLK UNION [5] are actually from Edinburgh, but the six piece all acoustic band who perform an eclectic mix of high energy atmospheric folk and bluegrass were mighty impressive last time they played here. They’re back on TUE 25 MAR at EDEN COURT and at AROS CENTRE, SKYE on THU 27.

If all that’s given you an urge to perform yourself, head to GLACHBEG CROFT on TUE 18 MAR for an OPEN MIC NIGHT followed by music from SILVER COAST and CAROLINE TRUSLOVE.

Away from the folk, Gigs Of The Month come from pub rock legends DR FEELGOOD [4] at IRONWORKS on FRI 14 MAR (read about their favourite songs on P13) and ace Glasgow indie combo CASUAL SEX [3] at MAD HATTERS on THU 06 MAR. See you there...

One of the many things we’d like to see in 2014 is the lowering of the age demographic at the plethora of talks that take place each month in the area. As even a cursory dip into BBC4 proves, the unlikeliest of subjects can be interesting if presented well and while we’re not claiming that everyone giving a talk will be able to engage as impressively, you’re bound to leave knowing something you didn’t know before. And that has to be good, right? If only for your future standing in the Pub Quiz team.

So, tear yourselves away from the Xbox and give some of the following a go this month: MYSTERIOUS LANDS-LEGENDS AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF ETHIOPIA (CULLODEN FREE CHURCH, 09 JAN, 2pm); KANGAROOS AND DIDGERIDOOS, in which Paul Hibberd will talk about the wildlife, history and culture he encountered whilst working as a National Park Ranger in Australia (NAIRN FREE CHURCH, 10 JAN, 7.30pm); the enigmatically titled CHURCHILL AND THE MAN FROM FORTROSE (SEAFORTH ROOMS, FORTROSE, 13 JAN, 7.30pm) from Iain Maclean; PROBLEM - WHAT PROBLEM?, an Inverness Field Club talk about native versus invasive species (NEW MILBURN ACADEMY, 15 JAN) and SWANNING AROUND IN SCOTLAND AND ICELAND, an RSPB talk on Whooper Swans (FRASER PARK BOWLING CLUB, 30 JAN). As you can see, nothing if not diverse. For admission details, see our website at whatsonhighlands.com

If you fancy turning your hand to something a bit more physical, how about taking part in WE WANT YOUR LOAF, part of the KINGUSSIE FOOD ON FILM festival. Taking advantage of the deserved success of the mighty Great British Bake off, this is a competition to fi nd the best freshly-baked loaf. There won’t be the kind words of the saintly Mary Berry or the killer gaze of Paul Hollywood, but VIP judges are promised. To participate register using the form at kingussiefoodonfi lm.co.uk before 24 JAN.

And, just in case you need an excuse for a little more New Year celebration, 25 JAN is BURNS NIGHT. If you want to see all that’s happening haggis/dram wise, again whatsonhighlands.com is the place to look.

Charlie Sheen’s visit to the Highlands last year has apparently been blamed for scaring Nessie away, 2013 having been the fi rst year since she was fi rst spotted that there haven’t been any sightings. So we’re going to have to rely on something else to attract the tourists and what better than the glories of a dram? There’ll be plenty of opportunities to celebrate at the INVERNESS WHISKY FESTIVAL on FRI 04 & SAT 05 APR. Now in its fourth year, over the course of the two days guests will have the chance to experience a tour of Inverness with accompanying drinks, tasting sessions, and a traditional ceilidh. BRUCE MACGREGOR, founder of Blazin’ Fiddles, will lead the troops as they enjoy a selection of fi ne drams and some impassioned story telling which will bring history to life. The Saturday event will start off at Bogbain Farm at noon and host up to twenty different distilleries as well as masterclasses, tastings, an auction, great local food and live music and entertainment. Radio Scotland broadcaster TOM MORTON [1], will also be performing his malt-tastic Malt and Barely Revue. More details at invernesswhiskyfestival.com

A man who you get the feeling would be a fi ne drinking companion is the highly entertaining ANDY KIRKPATRICK [2], a man who certainly knows how to tell a story. He also knows how to climb mountains and in the past couple of years has been climbing El Cap with his 13-year-old daughter (as featured in CBBC’s My Life series) revisiting Norway’s Troll Wall, and even attempting the North Face of the Eiger. He’ll be talking all about it at EDEN COURT on SUN 09 MAR.

If you like your adventure in a more virtual environment you might want to take advantage of the MORAY GAME JAM [3] from 14–16 MAR. Moray College UHI in Elgin is the backdrop for the fi rst ever MGJ, a 48-hour-long contest in which opposing teams of individuals interested in or with experience of games development come together to create a brand new video game. On offer to the winning team is the opportunity to be mentored by Elgin-based games publisher, Hunted Cow Studios, to refi ne and develop their game idea with the aim of taking it to the market. Join the Moray Game Jam facebook group now to meet your team facebook.com/groups/moraygamejam2014

SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

For the fi rst time in their brief history, INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE have reached a major cup fi nal, contesting the SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP FINAL [1] against ABERDEEN at CELTIC PARK on SUN 16 MAR at 2.30pm. Something that seemed highly unlikely with thirty seconds of injury time to go at the end of their bonkers semi against Hearts. The never-say-die attitude instilled by Terry Butcher resurfaced for the fi rst time under Yogi’s reign and they even managed to survive all of extra time with nine men before winning the penalty shoot-out.

All of which should give them some sort of confi dence for the fi nal against their second closest rivals (and old landlords), the tie made all the more tasty by the fact that Aberdeen have ICT old boys Jonny Hayes and Adam Rooney in their ranks. Just how many fans from either side will have made it to the ground by kick off was still uncertain as we went to print thanks to the ludicrous decision by BBC Scotland to schedule the 2.30 start time for a mere 25 minutes after the fi rst train from Inverness pulls into Glasgow’s station. We tell you, whether the independence vote is “yes” or “no”, the next step is surely for the people of the Highlands to tell the Central Belt to do one. Either that or hold the fi nal next year in Wick.

Closer to home it’s the INVERNESS HALF MARATHON [2] on SUN 09 MAR. Over the decades it’s become an increasingly popular event (though not popular enough for the BBC Scotland centrophiles to televise) with 3,000 competitors last year and just as many expected this time round. For those who want to ease themselves gradually into the sport or simply raise money for good causes at a gentle pace, there’s also the option of the 5K Fun Run. Not to mention the Global Energy Group 5K Team Attack, open to employees from all business sectors AND groups of friends or clubs, where teams of four complete the 5K course with the fastest cumulative time as the target. A beautiful run over a course suitable for all levels of ability. Find out more at invernesshalfmarathon.co.uk

DANCECOMEDYCABARET DRAMA MUSICAL

CABARET > COMEDY > DANCE > DRAMA > MUSICALS > MORE > 31

It’s all about the seemingly diametrically opposed as far as public performance goes this month, or at least experiences from totally different ends of the spectrum. COMEDY: Take comedy for example. JASON MANFORD [1] comes to EDEN COURT on MON 10 MAR with a show entitled FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS, marking the latest stage in a career that’s gone from engaging Peter Kayesque ruminating to brink of mainstream success, tabloid self-destruction and now back to that comfy, if undeniably inventive, gag merchant persona.

––– Vs –––JERRY SADOWITZ [2], on the other hand, will never, ever have what he does described as “comfy” and it’s fairly safe to say that a job presenting The One Show, though undeniably an entertaining prospect, is unlikely to be offered him as long as there’s, well, anyone else alive. If you’ve seen any of his previous shows up here you’ll know that he’s a whirlwind of misanthropic wit, bound up in self-hatred and a breathtaking fearlessness. Let it be remembered that he was outing Savile as a paedophile twenty years ago.

Sadowitz is also an extraordinary close-up illusionist and his COMEDIAN, MAGICIAN, PSYCHOPATH show at EDEN COURT on FRI 28 MAR will showcase that remarkable talent. And obviously include lots of effi ng and jeffi ng too. Not for the faint hearted, but a comic and magical talent without equal. Absolutely unmissable.

DANCE: For Strictly fans, BRENDAN COLE’s [3] appearance at EDEN COURT on WED 12 & THU 13 MAR will be unmissable too. Going under the banner LICENCE TO THRILL, he’ll be joined by a cast of twenty musicians and dancers for a spectacular night that’ll incorporate a wide range of music and dancing and about fi fty billion sequins.

––– Vs –––Cole’s obviously a man in touch with notions of masculinity and femininity, seemingly comfortable with both. And it’s that subject that’s addressed in the entertainingly odd-looking MOTHERLAND [4] at EDEN COURT on 29 MAR. Presented by Vincent Dance Theatre, the multi-talented ensemble of men, women and children take a look at the gender they were born into and the price they are paying for it. Using cultural touchstones as diverse as Simone de Beauvoir, Caitlin Moran and The Spice Girls as inspiration, the show promises to wind its way through “airbrushed beauty, boob jobs and Botox, victim blaming, slut shaming, the might of motherhood and the challenge of childlessness.” Which doesn’t exactly sound like a barrel of laughs, but it looks far more entertaining than you might imagine and is sweeping up critical and audience acclaim in its wake.

THEATRE > Opposites Attract, continued: CABARET: At least you know where you are with a bit of a wartime knees-up and BLESS ‘EM ALL [5] at EDEN COURT on 16 MAR is an unashamedly nostalgic celebration of rickets, rationing, bomb casualties and Europe-wide slaughter. Sorry, a celebration of memorable music and songs from the 1940’s. Starring comedy entertainer Steve Barclay, Britain’s greatest virtuoso of the Ukulele, Andy Eastwood and new singing sensation, Lucia Mattess.

––– Vs –––Rather more leftfi eld is ROCK’N’WRESTLE 2 [6] at IRONWORKS on FRI 21 MAR. Live wrestling action returns to Inverness with the stars of Premier British Wrestling such as Grado, Jack Jester, Davey Blaze and PBW Heavyweight champion Liam Thomson along with former WWE wrestler Joe Legend and TNA British Bootcamp star Marty Scrull. And the rock bit comes with a performance from TOBY MICHAELS ROLLING DAMNED.

DRAMA: Finally, a couple of plays at EDEN COURT with notable female input, though quite different tones. DARE TO CARE [7] on 15 MAR has been created by playwright and former prison warden Christine Lindsay. Through it she presents a cacophony of voices, stories, dreams, hopes, fears, strengths, weaknesses and madness. She shines a light on wardens and inmates alike, showing neither as angels or devils, but all doing the best they can in a system that expects the worst.

––– Vs –––On WED 26 MAR the creative forces of Birds of Paradise & Random Accomplice come together for the fi rst time to bring us a “frank and hilarious sex comedy about two twenty year olds looking for love in all the wrong places”, WENDY HOOSE [8], which, we are warned (because, as TV announcers already know, we are all children) contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature. Better strong language than weak language any day. Just ask Sadowitz.

Making The Most Of You: beauty

How to look good naked. We don’t mean for the whole of you to be naked ‒ just your face. With the latest trend, even on the red carpet, being for the ‘barely there’ look it pays to know how to make the most of the no make-up look.

There are many advantages to wearing no make up or at least to limiting your make up regimen, including less money spent on cosmetics, healthier skin, and less time spent getting ready in the morning. However, wearing little or no make up can be daunting, so here are some tips and advice on how to successfully pull off the no make-up look and feel confi dent.

If you’re going to forego make-up, you need to take the best care of your skin possible. Some simple tips are to cleanse your face twice a day and to follow that up with a moisturiser suitable for your skin type - it doesn’t have to be an expensive one. Exfoliate once a week and drink plenty of water.

Sunscreen is very important, even during the winter, for protecting your face. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 20, and one that protects against UVA and UVB.

If you don’t feel confi dent to go completely bare-faced but want to avoid foundation, you can even out your skin tone and tone down any blemishes with a tinted moisturiser.

Going without eye make-up means that your brows are ultra important as the frames for for face, so make sure they are neatly groomed with no stray hairs. It is also worth investing in an eyelash curler as a way of emphasising your eyes without the need for mascara.

If you won’t be wearing lip colour, it is important to keep them soft and smooth. A touch of clear lip gloss can also give you lips and face a natural glow.

So go ahead, give this super easy, bare-faced look a go.

Actress Carey Mulliganfavours the bare-faced look.

The Dairy at DaviotDaviot Estate, Daviot, Inverness 01463 772 976

In a break from the tradition of the ICA restaurant review, I have been sent this month to review a café. Taking just a short drive long the A9 takes you to The Dairy at Daviot, which boasts an outdoor children’s play area; a lovely courtyard for dining al fresco when the weather allows; lunches, coff ee & cake, afternoon tea, free wi-fi and a Sunday Carvery which I hear is drawing people from all over. The location is beautiful - looking picturesque even on this dreary February day and - though the café could be better signposted, once you are inside, you will fi nd a very tastefully converted farm building, with huge high ceilings and lovely little nooks. It was pretty busy on this mid-week day - however, the tables are nicely spaced and we did not feel crushed in or a lack of privacy.

It is set up more as a coff ee shop than a restaurant, with counter rather than table service, though

the waitress will then deliver food to your table when you order a main meal. We still managed to order a three course meal quite easily.

No starter menu to chose from but a choice of 2 soups - I went for the Thick Vegetable Soup while my partner had the ever-popular Red Pepper & Tomato Soup. The soups were served in lovely individual soup tureens, the deep pots fi lled right to the top. So plenty of soup for your £3.95 but alas no bread - or so we thought until we went to get our desserts and there on the table beside the tray bakes was a basket of self service bread. So, just in case your server doesn’t mention it to you, do help yourself to bread. However, though I moaned a little about the absence of bread, and thought I would settle for half of the large helping of soup if I could only have a bit of carbs to go with it, I did in fact eat the whole bowl because the vegetable soup

in particular was excellent. The warming tomato and pepper was also good, though a little too spicy for my taste.

The main courses are fairly standard canteen/café choices ‒ baked potatoes and ciabattas with various fi llings, plus a selection of home-made burgers, which looked very satisfactory indeed and seemed to be going down a storm. For something a little more adventurous we hit the Daily Specials Board, off ering four interesting choices. So I chose the rather diff erent sounding Mixed Pepper and Butterbean Stew with Herb Scone and Sour Cream which was a (literally)towering success of a dish. Good homemade, fi lling food and every element worked so well. I am not a huge butterbean fan (is anyone?) but these were soft and succulent and complimented the delicate tomato sauce to such perfection, that I was won over. There was no acidity to the sauce 3737

I want things in the bedroom to get a lot hotterDear LeanneWe recently moved into our new home which was to be our family home and love nest. The problem is that it is just too cold in our house to think about anything other than rising bills and a serious cold front in the bedroom. We have old draughty windows and a front door that is as effective as a fence at keeping out the cold. I’d love to replace them and turn my house into a home, but I don’t know if I can afford to. How can we possibly sort this problem and hear the patter of tiny feet on the carpet?

LEANNE SAYS:Oh, don’t worry, help is at hand. Of course you want to turn that house into a home and that will start with making it warm, cosy and welcoming. Contact Cairngorm group and they will advise you on the best way to move forward with expert advice on making your home warm. They will show you how insulating your home with new windows and doors will, in the long run, save you money whilst adding value, looks and of course warmth. I’m not sure if they can advise on the best way forward for hearing the patter of tiny feet, but you can ask them.

Dear LeanneMy parents have a fi fteen year old conservatory and when they use it the whole thing steams up. Their neighbours are starting to talk and the curtain twitchers in the street are thinking that something is going on as it is so much steamier when they have visitors. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. LEANNE SAYS:The problem here is pretty straight forward, John at Cairngorm told me. As your parents are swinging in and out of their conservatory, the aged conservatory can’t handle the ‘ups and downs’ of temperature so it mists up. Apparently it is a common problem with older conservatories but Cairngorm have a simple and easy solution. Turn it into an all year round room by replacing the roof and add or upgrade some of the window units which will easily solve this problem and give your folks a place to be proud of. They can welcome their “friends” into their new conservatory and save the steamy embarrassment!

Dear LeanneMe and the wife keep falling out over the big bills that the energy compa-nies sending us.They go up and up every year and according to the newspapers will be going up for the next 16 years, well that’s what the Telegraph said. She turns the heating up then says she’s too hot, I want to turn it down and she says she is too cold. I’ve a few quid tucked away in ISA’s but they

are doing nothing right now with the low interest rates and I’m dipping into them to pay bills. Any ideas?Oh, and I said to the wife the other night “put your coat on.” She said “Are we going out?” I said “No, I am off to the pub and I’m turning the heat-ing off!” She didn’t see the funny side, please help.

LEANNE SAYS:Sorry to hear things are a bit frosty at home. I called Cairngorm group

for you and they said you really are in a great place right now but don’t know it. Apparently many people are using their ISA’s wisely and investing in Solar energy, which not only pays for itself in as little as 7 years but then provides a tax free income for years after that. Hundreds and hundreds of people have switched to Solar, but I’m told you should hurry as rumour has it this could all change in April. As far as the jokes are concerned don’t give up on your day job.

CAIRNGORM 139.indd 1 12/02/2014 15:23

- often the undoing of a tomato sauce - but this was smooth and delicious and the sour cream, which at fi rst I thought was a bit bizarre, actually worked fabulously well. The herb scone was the cherry on the top of this dish. Light and aromatic, it made such a distinguished accompaniment to the stew. Bravo.

So while the specials board off ered a vegetarian delight, the only veggie choice on the regular menu was Macaroni Cheese & Chips, not a thrilling prospect, still at £7.95 I thought that perhaps they did something fancy with it. Unfortunately, they didn’t. Whilst the portion was large and there was plenty of cheese melted on top, the sauce itself was not very cheesey, the unremarkable chips seemed of the oven variety and there was no garnish or salad on the side (I know our reviewer last month welcomed the lack of garnish at Wetherspoons, but I for one like a bit of greenery with this kind of dish - it provides a little light balance against the ‘stodge’. So I thought it was fair, if a little overpriced.

As it is a coff ee shop the desserts come in the form of homemaking, tray bakes, biscuits and the like, all of which looked suitably home-made and very tempting. They did off er one Dessert of the Day, the ever faithful Eton Mess, which my partner chose. If you have people coming for dinner and you are an uncertain cook, you should opt for Eton Mess as the dessert as it is literally impossible to get it wrong. A mixture of soft fruits, traditionally strawberries, mixed with cream and pieces of meringue, all piled high in a big old mess. Though this one was a little lacking in wet chunks of fruit, it did have a lovely fruity sauce and a generous scattering of meringue pieces hidden among the creaminess. They did not stint on the size of the portion either, the dish was defi nitely maxed out.

I chose a slightly more genteel piece

of homebaking for my dessert - a Coff ee And Walnut Cake. The cake was light though a little bland, but it was helped out by a strongly fl avoured and thick icing and fi lling. Though no accompaniment was off ered with it, I did ask for something and was very happily supplied with a small jug of pouring cream.

I will make mention of the coff ee because it is made from the bean and is one of the best I’ve had in these parts, so well worth the trip.

I also must mention the Black Isle Dairy Ice Cream concession which is there. They sell handmade gelato-style ice cream in a fabulous array of fl avours, made on the premises using milk from the Black Isle dairy herd. They also sell exquisite little ice cream patisseries and desserts, all handmade, and unlike anything else I’ve seen for sale in Inverness. You can eat them there and then or they will box them up for you to take away. I have made a mental note to return for these. . .

So whether you take it as a canteen or coff ee-shop, I believe this place certainly merited a visit. Maybe slightly more restaurant prices than café prices but judging by how busy it was, that doesn’t seem to be putting people off . Fair play.

No evening opening hours so you’ll have to make it a lunchtime visit but it is certainly well worth it.

“Although house prices are now rising in most areas the rate of growth is comparatively modest at just under 5%. In areas where larger rises were recorded these generally offset falls the previous year and vice versa.

“Importantly, we’re starting to see the number of homes coming onto the market rise as the improvement we’ve seen over the last 12 to 18 months has encouraged more sellers to test the

market. This growth in supply is likely to continue into 2014 and should help to keep house price inflation under control as we move forward.”

Latest figures from SPC SCOTLAND have shown that the number of homes sold during the fourth quarter of 2013 rose by over 36% annually and to the highest level for the quarter for six years. The average house price in Scotland also rose but at a much more modest pace. A 4.8% annual increase brought the average house price north of the border to £179,223.Commenting on the figures PETER RYDER, chairman of SPC Scotland said:

“The number of homes selling across Scotland rose throughout 2013 and the rate of growth accelerated as the year progressed. In the third quarter sales were up 29% annually and this was followed by a rise of over 36% during the fourth quarter. The economic picture last year was brighter than had been widely expected and activity among first time buyers and buy-to-let investors in particular grew strongly.
