CUT THRU: A View on 21st Century Thai Art is a gesture: the gestureof slicing through vernacular culture, secular beliefs and religion inorder to access and investigate the complex and multi-layered 21stcentury Thai society.
Based on the idea of materiality - industrial / traditional, secular /religious, old / new - this exhibition brings together recent bodiesof works by nine emerging art practitioners from Thailand: Angkrit
Ajchariyasophon, Chulayarnnon Siriphol, Chusak Srikwan, NawapolThamrongrattanarit, Piyatat Hemmatat, Preeyachanok Ketsuwan,Ruangsak Anuwatwimon, Vichaya Mukdamanee and Tawan Wattuya.
In a time when the Thai cultural landscape is being redefined by awave of younger artists, this exhibition offers multiple reflections ofcontemporary Thailand by spotlighting iconic elements of daily life,vernacular culture and religion.

The exhibition introduces three women artists from outside of WesternEurope who have taken up residence in Berlin. Integral to their
practice is performance that is recorded and subsequently shownas independent video work. Their practice involves both themselvesdirectly as the subject, as well as others. Some of the work exploresthe subject of women as well as cultural differences that lie within theircountries of origin and between national boundaries.

In viewingthis exhibition
holistically, oneobserves thatthe juxtapositionof the imagesaddresses theimportance of different elements such as, colour, tone, form and thespatial considerations, as well as our own recognition of the humanform. At the same time, the exhibition further invites viewers to lookbeyond the images and their substance in order to critique and discussthe production and process of the work. The work represents aninvestigation of the ways in which our visual perception can be alteredin order to raise questions on the conceptual structure of the visualrepresentation.
The artists, Wayne Lim and Derrick Ng are recent graduates of the

Something About Seeing20 January 14 February 2012, TriSpace
Transpaper project,in which paperis chosen as themain material,investigates theidea of materialexploration. The
prefix trans isdeprived fromtwo wordstransformation and transparency. While transformationrepresents the major idea of this project as exploring thetransformative potential of paper, a mundane material, transparencydescribes a similar quality found in both artists works.
This exhibition is an investigation into a form of aesthetic known as thebeauty of purity, in which factors like sensitivity, fragility, lightness andtranslucency play an important part.
The artists, Anh Tran and Irene Febry, are recent graduates of theFaculty of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts.

Videologue is a neologised term from the words video anddialogue suggesting the form of communication through video art.
The exhibition/exchange project was conceptualised in 2010 by visualartists Urich Lau from Singapore and Cheng Guangfeng from Beijing,as an artist-initiative to create a platform that connects artists fromdifferent cities with video art.
The inaugural exhibition was first realised in Beijing on March 2011,hosted by Sunshine International Art Museum. It focused on thecommentary exchanges between the artists of both cities, on the
critique of contemporary urban changes and displacement.
In January 2012, Videologue: Beijing Singapore Tokyo continuesto explore the issues concerned, and on the situations of the humandilemma and dissociation in geological, territorial and cultural shifts asinterpreted by the participating artists.
Curated by Urich Lau (Singapore) and Cheng Guangfeng (China)

Drawing Relations is anexhibition highlighting
the emergence ofdrawing as a viableform of contemporaryart practice. No longerrelegated to supportwork and or just pencilon paper, contemporarydrawing has moved onto the three-dimensional,the conceptual and the act of making a drawing. This is a showcaseof works produced by first year Drawing Specialism students andsecond year undergraduate students for Studio Drawing of the FineArts Bachelor of Arts (Hons) programme. They were selected from aseries of projects that explored material, line, space, the everyday, thecartographic and the ephemeral.

Resonance: An Ethnographic Research ProductDesign Exhibition4 17 February 2012, Brother Joseph McNally Gallery
Undertaken by the final year undergraduate students from ProductDesign, the project was divided into two phases: Research and Design,requiring students to experience, analyse and extract the potentialelements of a foreign culture. Following that, these elements werethen translated into products to fit into a contemporary lifestyle thatappeals to a chosen target user group within that segment.
These student designers along with the programme leader had goneon location to carry out an ethnographic field research in the colourfuland multicultural Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. They were requiredto participate reflexively in their daily research journeys, understandingand interpreting the ways of Sarawak allowing the amalgamation ofindividual tacit knowledge and experiences. Over a period of eightdays, the group experienced a dynamic mix of Sarawaks indigenous
cultures interweaved with urbanised cultures that negotiate manyinteresting cultural collisions; identifying various start points fortheir individual searches for fresh product design possibilities withthe perspective of promoting new or otherwise lost values to thecontemporary world.
This ethnographic reflection and deflection of cultural experiencesgathered from the
ethnographic study ofSarawak, taken throughthe researchers and thedesigners translationsinto the contemporaryworld resonates in asimilar fashion to how
sound is reflected andaltered as it bounces offdifferent surfaces beforeit is finally heard, or in thiscase, showcased in thisexhibition.

One Perfect Complex

The installation byartist Lucinda Lawfeatures a series ofdelicate microcosmencased in bell jars.Each individualbell jar contains
elemental materialsthat explore thenotion of As Above,So Below, As Within,So Without. Each microcosm is a formation of objects that reflect theway this intelligence works, where the inner reflects the outer, fromatom (material) ad infinitum (metaphysical). Each is a miniature copy
of the macrocosm, alluding to the mode of its action, as depictedby most of the transient and transformative state of the elementalmaterials within the jars, which wane or develop across the durationof the installation. The work is an exploration on the unity of themicrocosm with the macrocosm where the complete understanding ofthe two worlds equates perfect knowledge.

This exhibition mergessurface design and
illustration, fusing visualcommunication withdecoration. Pens makemarks. Needles makeholes. The potential ofthe pen and needle asan art-making tool isrestricted only by thecreative intention ofits operator. Movingbetween the conventional and unconventional application of these artmaking tools, SURFACE 122 invited a group of designers and artiststo explore the possibilities of creating illustrative based artwork usingpens and/or needles, playing with the notions of surface and texture.

Hong Kong Intervention23 February 18 March 2012, ICA Gallery 1
This exhibition features a recent work by Sun Yuan and Peng Yucomprising 100 sets of photographs involving foreign domestic
workers in Hong Kong. This is part of a larger global economy wherewomen from poorer countries work abroad to raise money and sendhome as remittances to support their families. The two artists invitedthese women to photograph their favourite place in the house with atoy hand grenade. They were given a camera to make the photographand asked also to pose standing in the house and photographed frombehind to secure their anonymity.
There is a lightness, amusement to the project. And yet the doublingphotograph nonetheless carries within it a critique of the unspokensocial conditions of contemporary life and by implication of theaccompanying photograph, a time bomb of what may be to come.Anonymity serves a double purpose not only out of respect ofthe individual but also obscuring the identity of the person who isimplicated in the planting of the bomb: the suspect. Together, these
photographs create a theater of master/servant relations, a form ofpotential, albeit symbolic anxiety.

Institute of Contemporary Arts SingaporeThe Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS) is the curatorialdivision of LASALLE College of the Arts. It runs seven galleries,comprising some 1,500 square meters of gallery spaces dedicated toexploring new and experimental art across the Fine Arts, Design, Media
Practices and Performing Arts. Its programme focuses on showcasinginternational, Asian, Southeast Asian and local contemporary arts.Its outreach programme includes regular publications, seminarsand symposiums, visiting artists talks and events of contemporaryperformance, installation, design and music/sound practices. The ICASis committed to providing a cultural and educational tool for studentsand the Singaporean audience to advance their knowledge andappreciation of the contemporary local, regional and international arts,that is not otherwise available in Singapore today.
